MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Bristol City - Saturday 10th October 2026 - 12:30pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs Bristol City
Saturday 10th October 2026 - 12:30pm Kick-Off
Referee: Tom Reeves

Introduction
Its been two weeks since the Addicks last kicked a Football in competitive anger, a 3-1 defeat in South Wales meant that Charlton went into the two week International Break without a win in five games, albeit just two of those ended in defeat. The break has hopefully given us a chance to correct the mistakes that were creeping in, and most importantly, get bodies back from injury... We now go again.

The Opposition
Name: Bristol City (8th) - Manager: Michael Skubala
Ground: Ashton Gate
Previous League Result: Bristol City 1-0 Watford

First up after the International Break and its a trip from the West Country for high flying Bristol City who head to the Valley having stopped their own small rot the last time out. A 1-0 win over Watford just before the International Break stopped a run of back to back defeats for the Robins having lost 4-1 at Southampton, and 1-0 against Lincoln City.

It certainly must have been a pleasant outcome for visiting Imps fans on that particular evening, and also presents me the opportunity to talk about Michael Skubala who left Lincolnshire for the West Country in the summer; Skubala after all comes into this season with a strong reputation, having guided Lincoln City to the League One title last season, amassing an impressive 103-pts in the process.

So its a bit of a surprise that he decided to jump ship, and whilst the task will be a difficult one for Lincoln, the same could be said for the Bristol City job, given that Skubala is now their fourth Manager in just over a year. Yet the Robins have made a steady start to life post- Roy Hodgson, they now sit in eighth, and a win in SE7 this weekend, a repeat of what they achieved last season at the Valley could even see them in the top two come 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

Of course in this tight Division, its ridiculous to even be looking at the League table!!

Charlton Team News
As mentioned it seems that the International Break came at just the right time for Charlton, as its meant that Nathan Jones is now able to call upon a full squad of options, meaning that the likes of Kayne Ramsay can now be involved in this League campaign, whilst there was a welcome return to the team for Josh Edwards last time out.

Its in Defence where we need to find a bit more consistency, seven goals conceded in our last two away games will only see us go backwards, and whilst we also need to find the back of the net, its important to at least come away from games with a point at the very least.

Okonkwo
McNamara - Jones - Koumetio - Mesik
Coventry - Skipp
Grant - Leaburn - Campbell
Kelman

Substitutes: Mannion - Edwards - Bell - Bindon - Ouma - Nkeng - Carey - Alli - Costello

Good preview as per FA, after the three week enforced lay off I feel hopeful for this one...again, and going for a reasonably comfortable 2-0, very important we get the clean sheet to boot, just these 12:30 kick off's are a real pain in the arse...

    Oh please God not again...
  • This has been a very long 3 weeks.

Your preview assures me it is nearly over.

Please Charlton dont muck it up and make me wish the break went on for another week!

Excited for this one. At about 12:45 I might be wishing it was still the international break though

Think we lose this 1-2  in  front of another poor turnout

Great preview as always FA. Think the only change to your lineup might be Alli for TC depending on when TC actually has gotten back from international duty.

1-1 draw. Leaburn off the mark and we decide as usual to give Scott Twine a freekick around the box.

Feels like the start of a new season almost. So weird. Hope Chalobah can at least be on the bench.

I’d almost forgotten about Chalobah. Please let him be back 🙏

I can’t tell if these mistakes are intentional or not.

Both TC and Coventry have played quite a lot of football over the last three weeks (and TC has travelled thousands of miles too). Will be interesting to see if they are ready to start.

Jones maintained that things would change after the international break. Well, it’s after the international break, let’s hope that things change.

No game for 3 weeks and now we are back into 3 games in 8 days. Crazy schedule.

Looking forward to it as always even with it being a 12:30 kick off. No idea how it will go but a few beers to be had and hopefully 3 points on the board as well

Not sure we'll start with 3 centre forwards on the pitch. Glad we think Koumetio is back but where's Ramsay? Where's Chalobah? was hoping they might at least be on the bench / pushing to get in the team by now ?

I think we've seen all but Chalobah and Godden in training videos or images.

some very difficult decisions for NJ as to even who makes the bench, let alone starts.

Billy at CB will be massive for us, no idea how he'll go with the rest of the side.

Can see Leaburn up top with Kelman on the bench.

    2-1 Charlton - Leaburn / Jones

If Chalobah isn't starting I'd pick Ramsay at right back. Our inability to pass it out from the back is a huge problem so we need to have at least one player on the pitch who can pick the ball up from deep and carry it between the lines.

We're joint bottom with four other teams. Alongside Bristol City, funnily enough.

We're 7th in the league for points won at home.

Big game.  We need a win after not winning in our last 5 and a pathetic performance at Cardiff before the break.

Bit of pressure on NJ to get this right and to be fair to him, he has gotten results off the back of bad performances before, Leicester after Millwall springs to mind

Hopefully he gave a few players some extended rest over the break (the ones that weren’t on intl duty obvs).  Some players really let themselves down against Cardiff, so I hope the team remember that, work hard, concentrate and do the basics and the onus is on us to show what we can do with the ball as well.

    Don’t let us down

Would certainly like to see Nkeng get a go. No point buying talent and not utilising them. Even if it is to see where he is at.

Really need an improved performance whatever happens, it just hasnt been good enough and whilst we aren't world beaters, we can certainly do better!

Charlton 1 - Bristol 0 (Leaburn) backs against the wall for last 20!

Despite being three points off second place, the feeling is pretty glum at the moment. We need a performance to lift the mood again.
