That's probably because Leaburn wasn't getting service so drops deeper, and is also the man to drop deep to be the target on goal kicks. He also comes back for set pieces.fenaddick said:
While you’re right it’s been 4231 there’s been at least one game where Grants average position was more advanced than Leaburnsam3110 said:
When lined up off the ball Grant would be a good 5-10 yards deeper than Leaburn3 -
Good to see Koumetio & Edwards back but has Koumetio played any under 21 games ? Also with Josh being out for a year would rather have seen him eased into things off the bench for a few games. Still Jones sees them everyday so hopefully things turn out fine0

It’s basically the same thing. Even back in the day, the centre forwards didn’t stand next to each other .sam3110 said:0 -
So a 442 would be a much flatter midfield 4 with the wide midfielders attacking and defending in equal measures. A 4231 has 2 deeper midfielders and someone operating ahead of them in the centre of the park, with 2 more advanced wingers pushing up and supporting the lone striker.wmcf123 said:

He'll be back in October. Not sure which year. The Red Robin said:Great to see Billy K back - still no Chalobah?4 -
Good to see Edwards back but feel a bit for Mesik, hasn't really put a foot wrong.6

There’s very little difference between the systems , especially in defence , which we spend most of our time doing .sam3110 said:

I actually didn't miss this, can we extend the international break for another week?6

Ok sure, I'm talking about nuances between formations and as I have explained already, when you boil it down almost all formations are basically the same.wmcf123 said:

But your point that we've been playing 442 beforehand for a number of weeks, isn't correct.
If you ask NJ or any of the players what formation we line up in, they'll all tell you it's a 4231, if you ask pundits, journalists, scouts and football coaches what formation Charlton use, they'll tell you the same.
Sorry if that comes across as demeaning or belittling, but it's not, it's simply pointing to the facts1 -
There were always lots of different types of "4-4-2" back in the day. Believe it or not, not every team set up in exactly the same way.sam3110 said:

Then along came more sophisticated computer games and everyone now thinks they're a tactical revolutionary genius, and nobody had any idea in "the old days".2 -
True. But let's be honest, the 4 2 3 1 hasn't really worked in recent weeks and was a disaster last week.CAFC_boi said:Interesting line up - either going to be amazing or awful, let’s find out …

Mesik must be buggered after playing for Croatia and Slovenia's U16, U18, U21 and senior sides in the last three weeks.Talal said:Good to see Edwards back but feel a bit for Mesik, hasn't really put a foot wrong.

Afternoon everyone

Football's back ... oh joy of joys.
I'd got quite used to the last few weeks ...7 -

Mbick signs the new contract at half time, and is immediately subbed off before the ink is dry to bring another defender on.ForeverAddickted said:Love the faith that Jones has in Micah to throw him into the eleven so soon, must have impressed over the breakCant see this simply being a bit of gamesmanship over the Contract discussions either.8 -
I read it as Micah playing as a 10, and I don't mind it. Really attacking, and that defence looks solid AF.
Can't wait to see how Josh fares over 60 minutes or so, it's great to have him back.

Did Bell play for Jamaica, as he's also unlucky not to play? Suddenly we have lots of left sided options.
I imagine Edwards will be rested on Tuesday0
