Constantly space behind their RB, just need to exploit it1

That is a bizarre substitution0

Sky showing a replay every time we take a throw in is doing my nut0

Lobato HAS to do better there0

Well, much better in a footballing sense. Actually passed the ball around a bit, played out of trouble and created some breaks. The subs weakened us and we reverted to trying to lump it but we showed signs of being able to play a bit. Some unexpected players had excellent games; Fitzgerald won a lot in the press and set up the goal, Davidson was excellent even without her goal and showed finally what Hills is trying to do with her. Lobato was fairly colossal and Flandog showed some class. Conversely Mason is out of her depth and plays like she thinks it too. Neville was terrible and we should be grateful that Medina fell asleep or got bored or something second half to spare her more embarrassment. As for Azzaro we should just send her back in January and try something else. She is constantly being reminded of what she’s supposed to be doing by Hills and just doesn’t bother. Clearly she’s not a pressing forward but she could at least pretend to try.We should have got ourselves a second goal the way we played but equally Utd had 3 or 4 clear chances on the break they could have put away so maybe we should take 3-1. We’ve just got to stop conceding these goals in quick succession and try and stay in games better
Actually, a word on the ref as well. Atrocious. Kept giving fouls against our press when we were strong but fair while ignoring pushes and tugs on our players constantly. She also allowed Le Tissier to get away with two petulant automatic yellow offences in quick succession - literally tackling our player while the ball was dead and we were setting up for a free kick and then booting the ball at Fitzgerald when it was dead - and just gave her a calm down talking to which is outrageous. Le Tissier needed booking and had clearly lost her head but the ref let her off and then gave her a pep talk. The only yellow she gave was when a player told her to book someone and she didn’t like that. Ridiculous4 -
I thought again we looked so far behind in quality. Not enjoying this !0
-
Some glimmers of better stuff but EvE was totally anonymous and Korhonen seems to run away from the ball as though she’s scared of it.

The most encouraging thing for me was we identified the issue on their right flank and tried to exploit it. It’s the first time I’ve seen us have a plan going forward1

I thought the ref looked unfit. She wasn't keeping up with play and was very pro United.0

One recurrent theme for me is our lack of pace, every team we have played in the WSL has out sprinted us , which gives the defenders a nightmare and means our attack on the counter quickly cut out, the long standing teams in this league in terms of athleticism are way ahead of us.0

There are a few exceptions but I couldn't help noticing that the short videos of training during the International break had no speed work or decent running.msomerton said:One recurrent theme for me is our lack of pace, every team we have played in the WSL has out sprinted us , which gives the defenders a nightmare and means our attack on the counter quickly cut out, the long standing teams in this league in terms of athleticism are way ahead of us.
Why we have 2 keepers on the bench?0 -
Agree with the general tone of others' comments - there are positive glimmers, but nothing like enough for us to get a result.
Having thought Neville looked really good early on this season, I'm getting really frustrated with her now. Twice in the first half she sold herself cheaply (having done so in the build-up to Brighton's equaliser last time out), and then the one time she was right to step in, her heavy touch allowed United to play around her and slice through us to score their third.
I agree with Weegie about Korhonen - talented, but with the heart of a mouse.
Lobato was excellent for the most part, and it's a shame that having got into position for that late header, she couldn't get it on target.
Fitzgerald's run for our goal was fantastic, and I liked the way she showed for a forward pass when we had the ball at the back, but she also showed her classic trait of wanting far too much time on the ball. She might get away with it if she were physically big and strong enough to hold players off, but there was at least one promising situation in the first half that came to nothing because of her dawdling.
To add to Garry's comments about Le Tissier, Jess Park was a right moaning so-and-so when she didn't get her way. A sublime player no doubt, but another sign of how we need to be a bit more street-smart in this division to get more decisions from referees.

Had a spare evening so thought I'd see how the women got on v Man Utd today by reading this thread. Have no idea as no one commenting mentions the score. Very strange.3

I agree, I look at this thread during and after game to see how we are doing, before someone says, losing, I know but can contributors please put up goals as scored, I realise it will be disappointing at the moment and I can go on BBC but I would rather read comments by our fans.swords_alive said:Had a spare evening so thought I'd see how the women got on v Man Utd today by reading this thread. I don't watch the Womens' team very often, but I did today.
It was woeful. Technically poor. Little or no closing down (I believe it's called 'high pressing' these days), and very limited tactical awareness. The lack of pace, both in terms of movement and speed of passing was very obvious.
It left me wondering what Karen Hills' pedigree is, so I checked Wikipedia.
"After playing at primary school, Hills drifted away from football until she joined a leisure centre at 18 years old and was persuaded to play for Watford who scouted her at an informal "kickabout"."
Take that, Nathan Jones.
Seriously ... the team has done well to reach the top level, but the players look ordinary and the management seems limited.
We've seen this film before.1 -
Watched a game at Sparrows Lane earlier in the season. Jason Pearce on the touchline shouting at his team pass, pass, pass.
Somebody needs to do it to the women's team. United did it yesterday. Their players knew the routines and were in space.
We were passing to a player about to be tackled every time.0 -
Karen Hills is constantly, and I mean constantly shouting at the team to pass, keep the ball, press and play forward when it's on. To be fair to the players yesterday was by far the best their passing has been in tight spaces. They played out of some tight situations, didn't lump it unnecessarily and got Flannery on the ball far more than usual which allowed her to try and play in Hutton or bring Neville up into the play second half. The reality is we're just not on a level playing field, Ellie Mason shouldn't be going up against Jess Park and Lucy Fitzgerald shouldn't be trying to make something happen on her own against Le Tissier and JanssenCrusty54 said:Watched a game at Sparrows Lane earlier in the season. Tight spaces is the problem. United made use of all of the Valley pitch. Pass and keep the ball? Too many back passes. All I see is Karen waving her arms.Garrymanilow said:

take it for granted we had lost , every game. If we draw let alone win you will know from the comments.ross1 said:

What you see isn't really relevant when I'm talking about what you can hear. I can hear what she's yelling to the players and it's focused on passing the ball and playing more calmly but it's a really difficult transition for the players. It's really not that surprising that a Utd team that had hundreds of international caps in it used the Valley pitch better is it?Crusty54 said:

From the very start her clear instruction was for kicks to be directed down the left wing. No variation. Too predictable for the opposition and lots of space to attack when they inevitably win the ball.Garrymanilow said:

That's where the space was though. Lundkvist was playing far too high the entire game and the biggest problem we had yesterday is that we didn't target that space enough. We only really got Hutton away once or twice, part of the problem being that Mason just didn't have the quality to set her away when we built from the back so we were reliant on breakaways, which we did manage a few timesCrusty54 said:

A long way to go of course but great to see Newsham out on the pitch https://x.com/cafcwomen/status/2112831268744462393?s=46&t=MojDVxh_AjG5taAWPQn6Tw

Just seen the interview with her. She is not expecting to play until March. Why was she included in the 25 for the first half of the season?fenaddick said:A long way to go of course but great to see Newsham out on the pitch https://x.com/cafcwomen/status/2112831268744462393?s=46&t=MojDVxh_AjG5taAWPQn6Tw
There was no need for the last minute loan of Mary McAteer to Ipswich to stay within the 25 linit.
