Even more so given Hazlewood missed the whole series, Cummins played just one match and Lyon just a couple.North Lower Neil said:
Their current issues makes last winter that much more galling - they aren't great, we were just even worse.Addick Addict said:
The knives were out for Maddinson once his selection had been made known and they will have been well and truly sharpened following his innings today. A naturally aggressive batter, he looked like someone who hadn't played any form of red ball for 18 months in making a 33-ball duck. That also included a negative LBW decision that wasn't reviewed by South Africa for a ball that was hitting the stumps.Addick Addict said:Whatever the criticism regarding the selection of Nic Maddinson for the Australian Test squad (and you only have to read what some former players think of that to realise it is far from popular), from a humanity perspective and a lesson to others to get themselves checked out, it really is a great story that he has gone from being diagnosed with testicular cancer 18 months ago to playing cricket again yet alone for Australia."Once I found out I had to have chemo, that was pretty hard to deal with. It had spread to parts of my abdominal lymph nodes and lung. That was a bit where it was pretty daunting."
Maddinson's wife Bianca was also pregnant with their second child when he began chemotherapy and had to quit her job as a dentist to look after their toddler son while Maddinson underwent treatment."By the second or third week, I lost all my hair. I was feeling pretty average. I was taking types of steroids to manage side effects, but they would keep me up at night. I'd be at the hospital from about 11am to 4pm. Then a sleep. Then I'd force myself to have dinner. I'd sleep until about 1am, but sometimes I'd then be awake until 6am. I found that difficult. I was super drained and felt like I had to sleep 24/7."I felt guilty. I couldn't do anything around the house."
It would really be fantastic if he was able to prove the doubters wrong but, even if he doesn't, somehow I think he'll be alright about that. Life and death really are more serious than football sport.
Australia are currently 100-4 and in a touch of bother with Maddinson, Head, Labuschagne and Smith all back in the hutch. They are also back to their, tried and tested, bowling attack of Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon who now have an average age of 36. In fact, Australia do not have a player under the age of 30 (and only Renshaw is under 32) in their XI with an average age of almost 35.2 -

A bloated group of players AND coaches, with completely separate coaching set ups for red and white ball cricket
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/cwz0v3zy7mpxoAs well as announcing player deals, England also confirmed new-look backroom teams underneath Test head coach Stephen Fleming and white-ball counterpart Brendon McCullum.Fleming has brought in Richard Dawson, who leaves his position as Glamorgan head coach, alongside former England wicketkeeper James Foster and South African Eric Simons. Fleming worked with both Foster and Simons at Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings.Marcus Trescothick, who took interim charge of the Test team for the home series against Pakistan, remains with the red-ball team.McCullum keeps the bulk of the staff who worked with him across formats: Sarah Taylor, Jeetan Patel and Tim Southee. Kevin Pietersen will also work with the white-ball teams in the run-up to the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa next year.

The rugby player involved in the Stokes Atkinson incident earlier this year, has been sacked by Saracens after another incident...0 -
Australia win, by 214 runs, the First Test in South Africa, purely due to the 272 runs from their youngest player, at 30, Matt Renshaw, who was born in Middlesbrough.1

This bunch of Aussies might have one last Ashes in them. Their batting will still be fragile and much will depend on whether they can keep Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Boland and Lyon fit. With our lack of a world class spinner, we'll be looking to prepare wickets to suit our seamers but that will favour them too.1
-
At some stage they've got to blood the next crop of Seamers. I wouldn't be surprised with his prolific county record if Fergus O'Neill is preferred to Boland.Addick Addict said:This bunch of Aussies might have one last Ashes in them. 21 year-old Arafat came to the wicket for Pakistan with the score on 133-5. He hit 59 off 58 to help them to a total of 302. With the ball he took 6-40 and not content with that he ran out Atkinson with a direct hit for the final wicket to take Pakistan home by 87 runs.0

91-0 and 120-1, to finish on 215 after 38.4 overs is pretty grim. It's not as if they were facing a massive total and had to score at a ridiculous rate.
Much better Pakistan team than the one who played in the recent Test series.1 -
As run chases go that was pretty pathetic in the end.5

Australia 97-8. How the hell did we get stuffed by them last winter?1

Been resisting posting about this for ages in case I jinxed it. They're 9 down now, watch them make a record 10th wicket standkillerandflash said:Australia 97-8. How the hell did we get stuffed by them last winter?0 -
All out for 99. Just the 326 runs behind1
-
If they get out of this one, it'll be very sad0

It feels ridiculously early in their "summer" to be playing Test cricket in South Africa in October. Especially such a big series.
But that's the problem with the modern schedule, packed with T20 franchise tournaments that seem to take precedence. The SA 20 runs from the 17th January to the 21st February, and EIGHT Test matches are being played in S Africa before then.
Baffling how S Africa can play so little Test cricket, then play Australia, Bangladesh and England, all within 4 months,0 -

Boland isn't finished yet as evidenced by this Test match. O'Neill might well be in the squad but his opening new ball partner for Victoria, Harry Hoekstra, is one for the future. He played for the Australia U19s and is still only 20. In his only two FC games he's taken 6-103, 5-46 and 4-52.0 -
Average bowling but ridiculous batting from Brook1
-
I'm enjoying the fact it's not all just been coming forward and swinging at everything - he built the innings and is selecting shots/when to swing away.Addick Addict said:Average bowling but ridiculous batting from Brook
Hopefully bodes well.1 -
Although yes, he's always been good in Pakistan.0

They can't bowl to him. If they had 14 fielders Brook would still find the gaps!0

Dropped on 186, invalidates the whole innings if you ask meAddick Addict said:They can't bowl to him. If they had 14 fielders Brook would still find the gaps!3 -
Fastest double hundred for anyone in ODIs1

What a knock. Absolutely loved Will Jacks celebrating straight away1

Brook out off the very last ball of the innings for 202 (116)
429-3 (50)2 -
Smith got out for the Aussies just as Brook hit the 200. Glorious3
-
Brook's record in Pakistan is ludicrous, there can't be anyone better there?0
-
That was just the most extraordinary innings. Batting shots I don't remember seeing before0

SA hammer the Aussies, winning by an innings and 31 runs despite losing ~150 overs due to rain2
