Sheffield Wednesday Possibly Entering Administration

Unpaid tax bill of £1.1 million, 10 points deduction if it happens.

Imo disgraceful that they could sign all those players in the summer

  • How many more of these will we see throughout the season?
  • I saw this on Brightys twitter and it doesn't sound good for them

Also agree - why the he'll were they allowed to make the signings they made!?

Convenient they enter administration immediately after the close of the window thus skirting a transfer embargo!
  • There are always loopholes...
  • If only they'd beaten Palace on the last day of the season then it would all have been so different.
  • we are the mugs here - Sheff Wed will probably get away with it and therefore took a calculated gamble. (As did Cardiff)

CAFC on the other hand play a straight bat and sell our best players to keep us going (Shelvey, Richardson, Bailey) and then replace them with inferior players, as I would prefer Bailey & Richardson over MacCormack and Francis anyday.
  • I wonder if Sheff Wed are considered both a big enough name (they used to be quite famous) and a small enough club (they're languishing in the third division) to be "allowed" to disappear?

In fairness Wednesday sold their keeper for £1m i think and replaced him with fatboy Weaver. Heffernan was a free, so was Morrison and Mellor is on loan so what have they spent?
  • Sorry Golfie but i feel for the little man and i would rather CAFC play with a straight bat.

We currently have not let anyone down who is part of the CAFC story from the florist to the food companies taht supply our stadium.

Yes we have made people redundant and had to cut heads

But thats the way things go in business from time to time i have read on here umpteen threads on people being made redundant.

    Not good but sometimes unavoidable.

yet to default on Joe bloggs who cant afford it as well is a piss take and i am glad we still have morals

this could be the club that Her majesty Revencue and Customs persue as one is going to get it
  • Totally agree NLA. That's the character of this club and long may it continue.

  • NLA has hit the nail on the head imo. HMRC are going to make an example of someone soon, they have to & I'm glad that we haven't gambled with it being us. I'm glad that we are led by someone who has morals, whatever you think of his decision making in the last few years.

    +1
  • There are still some things about Charlton we can take pride in, and this is certainly one.

I would Imagine both Heffernan & certainly Morrison & indeed probably even Weaver had huge sign on fees. We signed Reid from Sheff Utd for FREE, but the reality was we probably paid him £50k to sign for us. Cannot believe Morrison took anything less than £100k to sign on.

Yes they are, in short. Not got access to megabucks lawyers, Sky and the red top press to fight their fights for them and put pressure on the Gov't but a well supported, long established and famous club at the same time. Fits the bill nicely to send a message to the football industry.

Let us not forget that most of our debt belonged to the board who are Charlton supporters as I understand. They were never going to put the club in admin. as it was not their interest. However, if the debt was owed entirely to the banks then I could have seen us overborrowing like Cardiff, Palarse and Wednesday.

Way too much of a risk, promotion would have been a necessity for this season and if that didn't happen, we'd be in all types of trouble. I'd rather us languish in this league and be somewhat financially secure, opposed to being in serious debt to HRMC.
  • didn't the Wednesday Chairman go on about how unfair it was about Palae last year staying up despite administration - may not be thinking the same thing right now I guess!

yep he was very lyrical about it at the time

Borrowing a few more quid from the bank to the tax bill is not to be recommended...

  • I suspect they will be in real trouble if they dont go staright back up - same as Norwich last year, who gambled and seem to have worked for them.
Not recomending it though cause the penalty for not succeeding is dire.
  • So Southampton are in the s**t and now Sheff Wed.
If we don't go up this year we never will.
  • Im sure Leeds felt the same.......

Leeds is a massive city though and they always had good support. Our support is dwindling year on year.
  • Regarding our dwindling support, you'd think we'd do okay - there's loads of people in our catchment area, but the problem is too much competition (west ham, palace, orient, gillingham, etc) and, let's be frank, a rubbish product at the moment.
  • Gillingham pal not going any more, an even more rubbish product at £29 a match. I don't call that competition TBH.

Leeds make a massive profit every year too, well they did in Leaque 1. £3-4m I was led to believe.

It's not even known who owns Leeds so I would very dubious about any financial information coming from Ken Bates.

They did sell players like Fabian Delph for big money though
