The para paste below from the OS leaves it open to speculation methinks.
"The only alterations to Charlton's 16-man matchday squad from the opening-day victory against Bournemouth were the inclusion of Danny Green and Jason Euell on the bench in place of Bradley Pritchard and Paul Benson. Green was serving a suspension against the Cherries last weekend while Euell rejoined the club in midweek."

How is it curious? Euell can play upfront and in midfield. With 5 subs it is a no brainer.

Listen very carefully I shall say this only once(more):-)
Euell wasn't considered for the squad until he got a very late call up, so he was second choice to Benson until something happened to change that. Is this:

    1. Injury/illness to Benson
    2. Selling theory
    3. Bust up with Powell and Benson
    4. Benson pulled out for other personal reasons

Of course, it may simply be an injury or even a row etc but it is inconceivable that Chris Powell had a last minute change for tactical reasons don't you think?

No I don't think it is inconceivable.

  • I have no information or reason to think this other than a gut feeling (and there's plenty of it). I think Benson will leave before the end of next week and we will then bring in a bigger lump style of forward. I think one is dependant on the other.

I too don't think Benno will be here much longer. In my opinion we then need a lump and a forward with a bit of pace or utilise Waggy there

Thanks for that, TT . My point exactly.

With Hayes and BWP forming what we all hope will be a productive relationship and Euell getting the attacking sub spot, it may be that Benno has decided that he wants first team football elsewhere.....understandable.

Seven subs means it is unlikely barring injury that he will break through again.

Wouldn't be surprised if he went to Colchester , Orient , Southend ( who he supports ) or even back to Daggers on loan in a few weeks time . If he did I would hope it would only be an 'emergency' so that he could be recalled after the first month.

We could then get a different sort of striker in and Benno could be brought back in a crisis .

Unfortunately the five sub rule means the likes of Euell and Hughes who can cover two positions or more are going to get on the bench ahead of Benno or Harriott etc. Backward step IMO.

    Why no question?

    Oops, that's a question...............I win. :-)

If we can get someone to pay £150,000 for Benson ( or even a bit less ), the club will try and move him on, as Powell tried to do with Notts County.  He is no better than average at this level and the fee, together with the wages, will give us more latitude to get someone else in.

Benson will score goals at this level as he proved last season. Shame the 5 sub rule has really dented his chances at the moment

We should be bringing a replacment in before letting benson go. I don't rate the bloke but would rather have him at the club than be a player short. How many times have we sold a player with not enough time to replace him?

"he is no better than average at this level".

Maybe so, but do you think we could replace him with a better striker who will be willing to sit on the bench (or not even there) until he gets a chance?

It depends who's available and at what cost but, on the basis that it is a squad game, yes. No one can have a nailed on starting place.

We seemed to have signed a decent winger that's sitting on the bench at the moment till he gets his chance.

If he does not get some football in the next couple of games, he will surely want to go, the 5 sub rule will always have a negative effect on players like Benson. Bournemouth is a decent shout.

On 606 someone says we've received and accepted 4 offers for Benno

    Seems he's off soon.

My concern is if he leaves and we then go and buy a replacement, who is an out and out striker, then Euell would surely get the nod for a place on the bench, as he can play in 2 positions. So where are we going to find a striker better than (or at least as good as but younger) Benno?

CP: "we'd really like you to come and be part of our squad at Charlton Athletic".

PLAYER: "Cool, so do you see me as being in your first eleven?"

CP: "Er, well, no. We've got BWP and Hayes who are my first choice up front"

PLAYER: "Okay, so you want me to come off the bench to fight for my place?"

CP: "Erm, no. Euell will be our striker on the bench as he can also cover as att mid or out wide"

PLAYER: "So, I have to play in the reserves to earn my place on the bench, to fight my way into the 1st team?"

CP: "Err, the thing is, we don't actually have a reserve team as such, and are not entered in a league...............Hey, where are you going?.....come back, we want to sign you...............".

I would say that Euell will be the fall guy to start with and Hayes and the new signing will fight it out. Euell probably knows that.

From what I saw of Euell's "cameo" on Saturday then I think we can't count on him producing much this this season - he looked way off the pace and contributed nothing.

Just hope we sign someone soon.........otherwise we will be replacating last seasom when Powell first took over - 4 wins followed by................
  • Great stuff as always golfaddick! How long was his cameo, 20 mins?
