The biggest compliment you can give him is that no one has called for Gillesphey to be returned to the starting 11. He's made that place completely his own
That's very true.  Do feel a bit sorry though for Gillesphey...his play off heroics and his huge improvement last year...but his time will probably come.

    Yeah, bang on.

Gillesphey had a storming 2nd half of the season last year and without his Wembley winner, maybe we wouldn't even be in this division now?

But he doesn't have the quick acceleration of Bell, so no surprises he's not 1st choice.

    It's tough on Gillesphey though.

Same thing happened to him with the Plymouth Argyle promotion - bedrock of their promotion team, but their manager soon brought in a quicker player in the Championship.

Yeah I agree that he has been really good and has surprised me. He is improving with games and adapting to his new team. Just hope he can stay fit as he becoming very important for us.
    In Jones we trust

If Gilley didn't have a slow start to the season (alongside most of the squad tbh) last season, I think he would have been in with a shout of POTY, he was possibly our most consistent performer over the second half of the season. Jones and Ramsay are flashier defenders, and forwards always catch the eye more than a defensive player, but his key goals and rock solid defending were the foundation of our promotion in the end.

I love Bell he is so good. However at some point with the way he plays he will drop a clanger and cost us but I hope people give him a break if it happens as the upside outweighs the down imo

All been said. Gilly was superb for us last season, Amai is a step above though. Good to have two such capable left sided defenders.
However, I would not be surprised if Gilly moved on in the new year.

This would only happen if we recruited he is currently an injury to Bell or Edwards away from being in the first team.

Bell has been superb after the first game and  proof, if any were needed, that listening to fans who’ve lost the player isn’t always that worth doing.

Jones knows who he wants and he knows what he’s doing.

Never in doubt over his quality, very good player and I only wish we signed him years ago.

When he first arrived I thought he looked way too casual and a bit sloppy. After a few games ive realised hes just super confident in his own ability and a reallygood player! Said on the player marks thread hes quickly becoming one of my favourites

Been brilliant this season - probably our best player so far. Another plus is that, because of his age, its less likely than he might be snapped up by a 'bigger' club unlike Ramsay.

His casualness carrying the ball out of defence still worries me a bit, but I'm gradually getting used to it.

Trade off is not having Macca lumping it forward to Kelman.  Bell is a proper footballer.

Unlike last time Amari’i has actually travelled for international duty
  • Not sure this has been said before about Bell, but he reminds me a lot of SCP when he played for us. Hes so calm, controlled on the ball and never seems to flap, got great positional sense too. Yes high praise indeed I know, but he is showing his quality at left back now Edwards is injured. I'm hoping he continues his high level performances and cements a place in the top 3 POTY awards.

Very very good player. The composure, consistency and leadership is exactly why NJ bought him in.

He goes so under the radar. I still miss Josh. But Bell is absolute class.

Personally think he’s better out left. For some reason he always makes me nervous on the ball when Ramsay and jones never do.

Agreed he’s been class. Looks like no fitness issues so far.

We're missing him so much - having that CB option who can hold the ball under a bit of pressure and pick a short pass to the midfield makes such a difference (even more so when Kayne is doing the same thing on the other side, which he showed a bit more of again last night). So many wafted balls forward from Macca last night and it just kept coming straight back because we're not in L1 anymore.

    Hope he's back soon.

  • Yeah we need him back. We was on top against Coventry when he was on the pitch.

Does anyone know when he will be back?

Watching the goals back really shows how much we miss Bell. Gillesphey is out of position and completely lost for the first one (after playing a pass to Carey who was in a tricky position) and then he has no aggression for the second, I think Bell would have got a bit tighter and made it trickier for the attacker to run through
  • It was a poor decision to play him v Coventry.  Rushed him back and now paying the consequences.

It was also a poor decision to go into the season with 3 left sided defenders for 2 spots, especially when one is Bell who has had injuries, one is Gillesphey who is not of the right level and one is Edwards who spent time out last season.

The sooner Bell is back the better but he needs to be properly fit.
  • Desperately need him or Edwards back. Horrifically weak on our left side and TC isn’t the answer there
