After an underwhelming last season it looks like we are starting to see the player NJ actually wanted to sign this time around.

93 starts (he's never started more than 24 league games in a season) and 49 sub appearances in 7 seasons tells us two things - he's injury prone and is seen more a game changer than a game starter. I've always thought he was a decent player who looks pretty comfortable, another one written off too soon by some.4

That’s not the first time he has made an appearance from the bench like that (Brum away last year for example).
Changed the game and probably the best passer of the ball in our squad.
No way he is anywhere close to not getting a squad space. Great performance last night

He played a ball down the line last night with the outside of his foot that was sublime3

They've put up a video of the goal from the reverse angle and the way he sets the ball into Mesik's stride for a first time cross is so satisfying. Absolutely perfect weight on it to make sure West Brom can't set themselves properly to defend the cross and the mess it causes leads to our goal. Excellent cameo7

Changed the game when he came on
Like him, been fighting his corner since his first sub appearance last season - he's a tidy well experienced Champ footballer, No he isn't going to run around busting a bollock for 90+, no he isn't pinging Hollywood balls around and no he isn't breaking into the box and scoring screamers every other game - but he is going to more often than not - make the right pass and pop up in a good position because thats what 140 odd championship games has taught him.

Perhaps evidence that we rush to judge players too quickly when they sign... or even make the step up to a new level like Campbell / Leaburn last season.People are too impatient for success from Footballers now, they want to see results yesterday, rather than giving them an opportunity to transition into the new club that they're at, and most likely a new setup in terms of formation and way of working too - Surprised that he's been a suggestion for being left off the registration especially when you consider how much we've seen him already this season, compared as well to how much we barely saw of him this time a year ago.4

Did well against more tired legs. He's technically good but lacking speed and stamina. Great substitute option.2

The problem is he doesn’t have the work rate and intensity we require without the ball in that role. Off the bench is fine though. I mean him being a decent player in various positions is surely exactly the point to "get." Clever player, good footballing brain and range of passing. He'd look great in a possession based passing team like West Brom last night, where he could take on a Barry Bannon type role, not too much running, just picking intelligent passes and dictating play.1

We didn't press much yesterday, so think he'd be fine in games like that. Plus he's got 'half a yard in his head.' Can't underestimate the quality on his passes that allow attackers to not break stride and don't allow the defenders to recover. He's a very useful player.3

He's superb at driving on the ball, has great close control which can allow him to beat his man in tight spaces and he's excellent at picking a pass. He's made two goals already this season without them being assists by reading the play so much quicker than anyone else in our team would and setting another player away to cause some damage. He's a really useful player to have for a counter attack, which is good because we're actually really bad at countering despite being perfectly set up for it. Carey is the absolute god of picking the wrong option on a breakaway despite being really good at running on the ball and TC, bless him, doesn't always make the incisive choice if he picks it up too deep. JRC doesn't really have the legs to play the way we want from the start but it's very notable that his two biggest contributions have been coming on into that Carey role when the game is a bit more stretched and punishing the gaps that start to appear as the opposition get a bit ragged.Elthamaddick said:decent enough player to have on the bench to come on (in various positions) don't ever see him as a regular starter though.

I think he'll create a lot of late goals for us playing this way, it's really smart for Jones to recognise that with two midfielders behind him to do the running and more wide options for him to pick out he can take us from defending to having a shot on goal within one or two passes. I didn't really see it coming as an option5 -

Think that’s down to his energy and fitness though. When games are open towards the end his ability to find players on counters are outrageous and he doesn’t get overrun may be a little from the start. If he’s working from the bench why change a working formula, he’s definitely justifying his sub appearances over Knibbs thoughRedhenry said:Still being written off by some to start games...3 -

I reckon he needs to stop wearing black boots and change into some brightly coloured ones, he'll gain at least half a yard of pace on that alone9

At the moment though he is effective specifically BECAUSE he does not start games. Once the press and the energy has worn people down the gaps start appearing and hes proving very effective at finding them. If he started the games, 1.) He isn't quick enough to press as much as some and 2.) Fresher, more alert players would be cutting out the passes he makes.Redhenry said:Still being written off by some to start games...

Must admit his boots do stand out a bit, reckon his feet are massive.
