POST-MATCH THREAD: Portsmouth vs Charlton Athletic - Monday 29th December 2025 - 7:45pm Kick-Off

Puzzling - 5 minutes additional time became 8 minutes although we scored in the 6th. A word of caution, sacking managers after a bad run in December rarely ends well at Charlton.

Talk about going from ecstatic to pissed off in about a minute yesterday! But, that was bad luck and it’s football. I thought we played a lot better all round. It’s good to be getting back Bell, Burke and Kelman. Especially Burke and Bell who make us look a lot stronger in defence. I also think it helps Bree’s game. He played a lot better yesterday.In Nathan Jones we trust.6

Where to even start..
- Subs on the 84th minute?!
- Style of play
- The lack of character to not keep them out
- The lack of skill on display.
This football is AWFUL to watch, absolutely awful. There can be no excuses about injuries, every team has injuries, and truly the only player who we really miss right now is Edwards.
That win vs Oxford should have galvanised us. Beating Norwich and Pompey would have virtually guaranteed us safety, as they would have had to much to do to catch us, and our home form is too decent to drop the points. Instead we didn't turn up for one, and absolutely bottled it in the other.
We have 5 players who are Championship standard. 6 at a push, if we want to stay up, these owners will need to spend every single penny. There is not a chance we stay up with this current style of play, no way.
If we do by some miracle, it's cause other teams done us a favour, not our results from this point onwards.
Sickening, sickening result. Let's see if Pompey can bounce off of it like we didn't, and fortunately Norwich didn't either.
Nathan Jones. Please, for the love of God, drop the 5 at the back! We don't have the wing backs for it.

I've watched the winning goal back numerous times and there's plenty wrong with the what the players in 'charcoal' (FFS) were and weren't doing.
Worst of all is the shameful flinching out of the way by Carey - the simpering manbaby got the heck out of the way! Absolute freaking pussy.
Early season when we had a fairly solid base to the team and the opposition hadn't yet worked us out, I thought he looked useful in more games than not, his being our leading scorer seemed to back this up.
Trouble is as things have got stickier the ginger fraud has got the hell out of Dodge. Gutless shirking tosser, exemplified in last night's shame.
He's not the only one who's been way off it this last 8 weeks or so but most of the others e.g. Tanto, haven't got the skills or the presence.
The one thing guaranteed to piss me off with Charlton players is those who pull their punches, pussy out of tackles and go missing when the game gets a bit grown up.
I've seen enough clunkers, crocks and youngsters blooded too early over the last 30 odd years, to know the difference between no good and no heart.
No good is crap to watch but forgivable - no heart is flat out criminal.7 -
Have to agree. The amount of vitriolic abuse our players (mainly Leaburn from where I was sat) were receiving at Norwich was way over the top. Much more than I used to hear and I'm been to many many away games in my time.boggzy said:

To top it all that viral video in the corner features your archetypal trainspotter weirdo Charlton types - and you don't get anything of the scenes and sense of celebration from being in the thick of the main throng once the equaliser went in. Or the disbelief not long after. Why the fuck did that even get uploaded?! We're the bloody laughing stock at the moment - unforgivable the team simply switched off and waited for the final whistle.

Still an unbelievable chain of events.
How you score an equaliser at 95:56 and still lose when the ref only added 5 mins on in the first place is crazy.5 -

Its the spine of the team that needs to be right.....GK..CB..CM ..Striker....the rest of the team forms around these players. The only one really improved from last year is our CB Jones who has been outstanding in many of the games. Desperately hoping Kelman starts scoring because he looks a very decent player.

I desperately hope I'm wrong but that last gasp winner could prove a season-defining moment for us. I think one of these two teams will be joining Sheffield Wednesday in league 1 next season and we squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to keep a weak - and injury weakened - Portsmouth team at arm's length. Apart from diabolical defending and a lack of professionalism in the last few seconds, the psychological impact on the side could seriously damage our prospects of staying up.
The transfer window opens on Thursday but January is a tough time to do good business and, from a player's perspective, we now look a much less attractive proposition than we did a month or two ago. The economics of the Championship - which were already brutal - have been skewed further by Wrexham and Birmingham and their astronomical spending on transfer fees and wages. Against that backcloth, it will be very difficult for us to get in seasoned Championship players.
The next two games against Coventry and Blackburn will be tough and the latter is another potential
6-pointer. After the FA Cup game, we then have Sheffield Utd and Derby at home and tough away fixtures at Millwall and Leicester.
The team have well documented problems, principally, a lack of creativity and non-goalscoring strikers. There were, however, some positives last night, namely:
- a significantly improved performance from the dross served up at Norwich;
- a fine first start of the season for Rankin-Costello;
- a decent performance from Burke on his return;
- a very skilful performance from Bell, although he blotted his copybook with the two goals.
A long way to go and, notwithstanding our dismal run of 4 points from 9 games, we still find ourselves 5 points clear of the drop zone. The direction of travel is far from encouraging and needs to be reversed quickly or we'll find ourselves in the drop zone.

Nathan like Nelson, was struck by the musket ball in the 98mins however he didn’t get to fall into the arms of the winged figure of ‘Victory’, on the deck of his flagship of the same name.She is in the act of placing on his head a laurel wreath that unmistakably assumes the form of a halo, after 96th minute equalizer by Harvey. Meanwhile, Hardy points to the battle raging to the left, informing Nelson of the defeat while to the right a midshipman clasps his hands in grief and prayer as the magnitude of losing for first time in 20yrs at Fratton Park overcomes Nathan : Nelson. But fear not we sail again along the Thames to take on Lady Godiva’s fair and naked troops on New Years Day, a New Year presents a new start for our gallant team. Onto the Battle of Coventry. See Ipswich (H) 3 seasons ago. 2-2 going into "injury" time and they made it 3-2 just as the board was going up. Cant remember how many mins were held up (4 or 5 ?) But we equalised to make it 4-4 after 90+9Callumcafc said:Still an unbelievable chain of events.

Run at some of these teams as our old way has run it's course.Guaranteed safety with 23 games still to play…that’s a new one for me!
Clubs sitting 18th or 19th onwards are usually fighting right up until the final day of the season.

Will agree with most of that, but and its a big but. Nobody was complaining about the style of play in the first 15 games, 15 games that got us 23 points. We still haven't operated with a full squad since the Millwall game, I am open to challenge on that by the way and I'm not including Godden in that statement. Last night we were missing Ramsay and Edwards, nobody is guaranteed a place in the starting eleven but I'd wager most on here would have them in their starting eleven. Gillesphey actually regained his place due in part to the long term injury to Edwards and we know Gillie' isn't the quickest so when Bell pulled up we then have tried every permutation to cover him, which is now almost settled on Tyreece Campbell, reducing our attacking threat and forcing us to use Miles as a target man and hitting long balls up to him. Those changes have also seen a drop in form for Sonny Carey, a player, who was lined up to shag everyone's wife in the first 15 games.Braziliance said:Where to even start..

We have only just got Kelman, Burke and Bell back, see where we are when Ramsay and Edwards are back, I think it will allow us to have a better picture of the side, with a couple of additions, we may start climbing.12 -

Norwich: A couple were standing on the left hand side of an escalator. I said 'Excuse me please.'. They didn't step to a space on the right and just laughed. Once we reached the top and they all went their own way, their friend (who was stood to their right on the escalator) shouted 'Scum' at me.
Portsmouth: I walked past a Portsmouth fan (not even remotely close to brushing past him) and he almost burst into tears at seeing somebody walking faster than him. He shouted at me, telling me that he hoped I died.
I see people blaming the government-imposed restrictions for this a lot, but it's often people in their late 20s behaving like this, so they should have developed social skills long before people were isolated.3 -

Worth remembering when Nathan Jones took over at Luton in 2020 they were dead and buried. By 8th July after they’d only managed to draw with Barnsley they were 24th and 5 points adrift of Charlton in 21st with 4 games to go. After the final whistle on the last day they were 19th and 3 points clear of Charlton after 3 wins and a draw; we were relegated. Championship seasons will go right down to the wire and no-one is safe or relegated until the end. Plenty of time to go, plenty of things to change.10
