  • The last 30 seconds of that game felt season defining. Instead of our joy and their despair,  after the Knibbs goal, it's completely reversed. A MASSIVE confidence boost to one of our relegation rivals. Such an awful goal to concede.

So frustrating,  as they were very ordinary.  Indeed they were awful in the first half,  we really  needed to have gone ahead then. We didn't miss any sitters, but Kelman had a couple of shots which lacked power.

Rankin-Costello was a man possessed today, making his previous absence baffling. I don't rate Knibbs as a No 10,  but he is very effective as a battering ram substitute.
  • Sorrow drowner in hotel bar and just got back to room. Honestly can’t remember feeling that gutted for a very long time.

My god you need to have some resilience to follow this club
Couldn't even face that.  Back to room, shower and lights out now.  Trying to think of the cooked breakfast in the morning to cheer me up 😁

Honestly, I usually wait until the end to give the lads a clap, but I just couldn't do it today.  Not after that.  Not after giving it large to the Pompey fans next to us just 10 seconds before.  Gutted doesn't even cover it.

Really fucked off now, serious questions need to be asked and changes made to system or personnel (manager included?). Needs to buck up his ideas. Can’t blame injuries when we have most of the squad fit now.

We are going down without the above, and it will be devastating for the club, if everytime we go up, we go straight back down.

Big January needed with some serious investment.

Feel good factor well and truly gone and dreading getting spanked by Coventry in a few days time.

Just really upset and sad right now and losing belief quickly.
Game against Coventry is going to be brutal. Total carnage. But my morbid curiosity will likely keep me hooked on it. Just imagine the total and utter destruction of Charlton Athletic Football Club...
    weird & not helpful.
Wouldn’t want to be in the trenches with some of the cretins on here tonight
  • We'll beat Coventry.
  • Bell was quality and would love to see him and Ramsay on either side.

I thought Burke played well ...well enough for me not to be worried if he played more often...could you play Burke, Jones, Ramsay and Bell in a back four

Pompey were awful, like Norwich were a few days back. Zero points from the two is very very poor.

Performances like today are why players like Galbraith choose to not join us, we spent most of the 90 minutes firing the ball 40 yards at Leaburn for him to be beaten time and again in the air.. the midfield continually bypassed.

Coventry heads the ball like a 12 yr old, just anywhere, and almost always to the opposition, he always slows the game with sideways and backwards passes... Yet he is out best midfielder!

TC could have caused them real issues but we played him full back and he was so deep he was wasted.  That said, when he cut in and shot wide it was just classic of him, lost count of how many times this season he's done it.. just hit the target.

We create so little, yet Knibbs now has 3 goals from minimal minutes so the strikers excuse is not really realistic.

Disappointed. Hope we bring in some quality in January.  The thought of being in the same league at Bromley is just too depressing for words.
Really good post Athletico, especially the point about Knibbs, certain players have a knack in front of goal, the chances created tonight should have been finished before Knibbs equalised.
Don't understand the Knibbs situation. He was bought as a penalty box sniffer. Hardly gets any game time and yet we courted him for weeks.

It's a really weird one , the on off transfer saga , him needing a bit of time to get over this supposed foot injury he had in preseason and then just can't get mins. No idea how Berry starts over him tonight.

He's obviously someone we'd had very high on our list of targets.

Wasn't at the game nor did I watch the stream. Have recorded the 15 min goal package on Sky so will comment tomorrow on that.

What I will say is this. We have more home games left to play than away. Still have to play Norwich & Pompey at home. They will be 6-pointers & we need to win them. None of this "a draw will do" bollox.

We can stay up but to do so means the Owners need to spend money......and then spend some more. Never been a fan of NJ & dislike his tactics & formations, but changing managers now would be foolhardy in the extreme. As Macbeth said, we are in too deep to go back. However, if we dont buy at least 1 fit experienced Championship striker then I'll see you are in League 1 again next season. Goals will keep us up....clean sheets wont. Trying to keep a clean sheet in this League is like asking a 14 year old boy to keep one. Its  better to just buy him a box of tissues instead.

So.....the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And we wont have to wait long to find out how it tastes. If the owners really mean business I would expect to see 2 or 3 new players in by the time we play Chelsea. If we are just a rich boy's plaything then expect to see 1 or 2 by the time we play Millwall. If the latter is the case then expect us to be in the bottom 3 later that day (if not sooner). I know I am seen to be pessimist on here & my ramblings are seen as a joke. But I have been steadfast since the start of the season about where our deficiencies lie and sadly they are coming home to roost.

As the saying goes......the next 34 days could be crucial. Let's just hope we aren't too disappointed by then.

We are in a battle, and with our squad it's one we should of been expecting for the season. Our early form was the bounce from winning the play off final and being the new boys in town. That was never sustainable.
Time to roll the sleeves and fight like feck for every inch of grass, every tackle and every ball.

We're now where we thought we'd be at the start of the season. I'm ok with that. Survival is the only prize.

We're not in the bottom 3, and we have a game in hand, against a team we can beat.

It's going to be a bumpy ride.

2025 has been an incredibly rewarding year for Charlton fans, so take stock of that, look back on our achievements , and recharge for the upcoming battle we now face.

We need to stand up and be a positive influence.

I really dont understand why some people give you stick Golfie. You say it as you see it and the majority of the times are correct. Its obvious to stay in this division you need to spend money we all know everyone is trying to buy that 20 goal a year striker for as little as possible, it doesn't happen.

I came to work at 21.30 not knowing the score but knew we would have lost. The manner when i found out was disappointing. if we lose our next two games that will be 9 in 11. I just cant see where the goals are coming from.

Saw the Coventry game earlier they will just play about with us and score easy goals. They have a guy that throws the ball in from miles away whats the betting they will score by this method on Thursday.

knew it would be a hard season i just cant stomach another one in league 1. Owners better cough up.

PWR. We have just played two teams in the bottom three. We allowed Norwich to keep their first clean sheet in 20 games. We let the lowest scorers in the league score two goals against us. I went into these two games expecting two draws at worst but we haven’t even picked up a point. What’s that now, 2 wins in 9, 1 win in 8, 4 points out of 24? You can dress it up anyway you want, blame injuries, blame the refs etc but that return isn’t acceptable. However, I trust NJ to sort it out. I’ve doubted him before, after the Crawley debacle, but he proved me wrong then and will do again. But things need to get better pronto.

Such a punch in the guts. Positives are we were better than Norwich - Bell (in the back 3), Burke and JRC all improved us.

Every game  in this league for us is a hard game, and we were better.  Don’t care how good or bad the opposition are. Every game is hard. Every point is earned,

But, we don’t create enough, and the defending at the end was unbelievably bad; horrific.  Ref a total homer (and I’m not talking about when he blew the final whistle - although he somehow managed to allow both too little and too much added time) small decision after small decision throughout the game.

We have to all own this now. We are in a fight, and the club needs to come together and battle to stay in the division. Every point is precious. We will lose games Move on from the defeats, and just somehow get the points we need.

I don’t think we need strikers - we need depth in defence, wing backs and variety in midfield.

This season has so many similarities with 2019/20. Too many. Tonight felt like the night we went down. Think it’s the last time I felt so sickened.

That season scarred me and I’m sure many of us.

It cannot happen again. Can it?

But I love being back in this division. We have to do all we can to stay here, and as fans we just have to back the team, hard. There’s no practical alternative, other than self defeating ones   Points at home will make the difference.

Well said - we’re in a battle and the enemy now have us in their sites - what we don’t need are deserters, those who turn as soon as things start wobbling -  NJ and the team will turn this around with some help from the owners.

It's been three hours and I still feel sick to my stomach.
  • Too wound up and upset to sleep. I am getting very worried that we won't turn this around. I know we have had injuries but I am sure the constant changes to team and formation doesn't help. It has been proven so many times that the teams who keep a settled side and use the least amount of players do better. Last season NJs strategy was to keep tinkering until he got lucky with a team and formation. He needs to find a formula very quickly otherwise we are in deep s**t.

As the season goes on it is quite clear our league 1 players, old and new, haven't stepped up and the lack of quality is showing too often now. We brought in JRC who had championship experience and he has hardy played him. We bought Apter but NJ doesn't use him because he doesn't fit our formation. It is all very worrying.

As for getting players in in January. If people think we can just go and buy a few championship quality players then they are deluded. Even if we could find them at the right price, would they want to play for a struggling team. At best we will be left with a few misfits/ injury prone players from mid table teams. I really hope I am wrong. Our salvation may lay in a couple of decent loans but we all know what NJ thinks about that.

At the end of the day this is what supporting our wonderful club is all about but boy is it difficult at times... And not good for your health!

PS I have my ticket for Leicester away... What could possibly go wrong!!!

I really thought we might have turned a corner with the Birmingham and Oxford results.

The difficulty now is that with 5 changes for this game (you could argue justified given how poor we were against Norwich), it is hard to tell if Jones has a grasp on his best XI.  Arguably there's not much between some of these players, but I feel that we've tried a lot of different line ups over the last two months (some of it forced by injuries of course), and it feels a little directionless.

Remarkably there is still a cushion from the bottom three given our form over the last 10 games, but that won't last forever.  We need 3 points as a minimum from the next 2, regardless of the opposition.

I really don't know how he'll set us up against Coventry now, but the players really need to be 100% up for it.  They're a good team and the odds are against us, but if we could just dig out a win it could really ignite a bit of belief going into the second half of the season.  It seems silly to talk of getting a result given our form, but it's where we're at
  • Just home & still can't come to terms with the the result & PWR.

I thought the starting eleven looked more balanced than it had for what seems a long time, but the gaffer finally has the majority of his squad to choose from. And for the best part of the first half, I felt far more positive than I have for some time ....

But the fickle finger of fate hadn't finished frustrating us and, on reflection, 2025 will end with our club barely keeping its head above the dreaded "R" zone.

Our equaliser, maybe unexpected/maybe deserved appeared to have given us a decent point away from home.

But, ironically, just as the faithful began to taunt the home fans regarding our record at Fratton Park, the ball was in the net in front of the home end and jeers turned to tears. Heartbreaking.

There was no clock visible to us so we were unable to see the seconds remaining following our goal but I'd say that 99.9% of our fans expected the ref to allow the restart & blow his whistle immediately after...but we should have known better. When did we ever get the rub of the green ? BBC Sport online report stated  "Despite the clock ticking over into the 98th minute, referee Paul Tierney( spit!) allowed the home side to take the kick off..."

So, another defeat & one that's particularly hard to swallow. I had very little voice at the start of the match due to a heavy cold but it allowed me to wallow in my own misery on the journey home.

    For that, I'm thankful.
  • Burke/Ramsay Jones Bell Edwards (out injured) Coventry Carey are the only ones who for the most part have looked consistently championship standard this season, only knowing half your best lineup by January or only having half a team up to the standards is very worrying

Hurts more for sure, but the performance was a lot less appalling and Pompey looked toilet so I don’t think it actually is considerably worse despite how horrible and raw it feels
  • Mrs and petrolhead got back half hour ago , she said there was coked up pissed wallys standing in front few rows who were a pain and it was as bad as Birmingham away for the fuckedupness of our support .
She said there were loads of envelopes with the duplicated tickets when she got hers , there’s too many for them all to have gone missing in the post , I think our ticket office does as good as it can but it’s basically fucking shit, much like our team !

Got in about 20 mins ago. Queuing to get onto the platform at Fratton station was like being at a home game. We were even treated to a bare knuckle spectacle between one of our young 'uns and one of theirs. Some depressing icing atop a shitty old cake.
Can we have your percentages, please, Oohaah to send me off to sleep happier / sadder ?

I was looking at our remaining home games earlier and they don't look particularly easy (although nothing really is in this division).

If we focus on who we have left to play at home that are currently in the bottom half it's:

    Derby County
    Birmingham City
    Sheffield United
    Portsmouth
    Norwich City

Two of those (possibly three depending on when Portsmouth is played) are in January, so we NEED to be getting results against Derby and Sheffield United next month or we're going to be in a lot of trouble.

I'm confident that Norwich are going to recover and I do not see that being an easy fixture.

The home game against Pompey is obviously a must-win game.

Birmingham City is a tough game for me even though we won it last season and drew away there this season.

On the flipside, we seem to have played 8 of the top 12 away this season, leaving us with Middlesbrough, Millwall, Watford and Leicester City as the only top half teams left to play away, so our away fixtures should be a little easier at least.

As long as we finish 21st or above, I'm happy. I think we need a right back (Bree is about to return to Southampton), a left back and a central midfielder in January, but there's no chance that we're going to get the quality needed in all three positions.

Moments like the last second goal drag me straight back to 2019. Hard not to feel a bit flat.

The inner Mr Motivator insists the next few months will be fun and thrilling. The realist in me would prefer not to reacquaint myself with the blood pressure monitor!
The parallels with 2019/20 are getting greater as each match passes. We've had the injuries, and the yoof then being deployed to start matches.......and now we are replicating matches against Bristol City, Sheff Wed & Birmingham where we let in last minute goals to rob us of a point. Holding on in just 1 of those 3 games would have kept us up. Let's hope we aren't saying the same thing come May.

Thank fuck the internet didn’t exist when Lennie was keeping us up by the skin of our teeth year in year our in the mid to late 80s.
You mean the Lennie team that had John Humphreys, Mark Reid, Jimmy Melrose, Robert Lee, Peter Shirtliffe....(I could go on). And the Lennie team that played 4-4-2 with proper full backs, and strikers who knew where the back of the net was. And a midfield with sublime players like Paul Mortimer & Steve MacKenzie.
