Should we play our strongest team against Chelsea?

I'll start. A huge yes from me.
Our cup history in all competitions over the last 30/40 years is appalling. For a club of our size it is frankly embarrassing.
This is our first decent home draw for ages. We are live on TV. Now is the time to take the FA Cup seriously for once - something most of our recent managers (and I include the greats of Curbishley, Powell and Bowyer in that) haven't done..
It is 6 days since our last game, 7 days to the next. Professional footballers should be able to cope with that.
I know there are many who will say rest our stars, they might get injured. They might get injured training on a frosty pitch today.
So personally I am going to be very disappointed if Jones sends out a team full of reserves and kids.

Yes, unless they're struggling with a niggle or currently playing through something, as the league takes priority.

Yes - use it as an opportunity to build on the recent improvements in performance if not results and to get the Valley rocking3
-
I absolutely agree - humiliation in front of a full house and a sizeable TV audience (in the UK and abroad) is going to damage morale and, even if only temporarily, the standing of the club. If Cardiff can give this lot a game, we are also capable of doing so.8
-
Yes, no game for another week so no need for more rest3
-
I think we should put out the best team available.4

Yes. If anyone is carrying a knock or at risk then obviously give them a rest but we should be putting out our strongest team. I can’t see Jones not putting out a strong team3
-
Yep - strongest available side please (they'll all want to play anyway) as said, no midweek games either side so plenty of time for rest and recovery.
The only irreplaceable player at the moment is Lloyd Jones - unfortunately we've no one else really who can do his job0 -
Our last game will have been 6 days previously, our next game will be 7 days later. There is no excuse whatsoever for not playing our strongest available side4
-
Yes. Without question. If anyone's got a knock or a slight worry fine. But 6 days since the last game, 7 till the next, no excuse. Strongest team possible.0

Yes 100%0

I was thinking about this yesterday, and it's a yes from me too. I am sure the regular first-choice players would want all to involved in the game.4
-
I wouldnt start Burke/Ramsey even if fit given injury concerns. I wouldn’t start Bell if there is the smallest of signs of soreness/tightness. While not ideal starting Gough and Macca against Chelsea, we are fighting relegation so we can’t risk players with recent injury histories2
-
Strongest available team should always play, I just don't know what that is!4
-
Full strength let's go and cause an upset. No one will give a shit about us on the TV with being all about the Chelsea circus and Rosenior anyway.2
-
60 minutes then make a load of substitutions.0
-
I'm not fussed as long as we go with something strong and give it good go. My expectation is we get brushed aside even if we play well, but upsets do happen and it could be us this time.

All the players will be chomping at the bit to get into the matchday squad I would imagine. If we put in a good performance but lose then we were never favourites against the World Club Champions. If we win, well that could be the biggest morale boost we need to push on in the league. Win-Win, well you know what I mean.1

Of course.
This is the FA Cup, not the Pizza Trophy.
Unnecessary question imo.2 -
30 years ago yesterday Charlton beat Premier League Sheffield Wednesday by 2 goals to nil at the Valley. Kim Grant and a Paul Mortimer penalty with the goals in the first half
We played our strongest eleven that afternoon what was available at the time (Salmon, Humphrey, Stuart, Mortimer, Rufus, Balmer, Newton, Leaburn, Robinson, Grant and Bowyer) against a side that was 13th in the top flight at that time and included the likes of Des Walker and Chris Waddle. We was 2nd in the First Division.
Always play your best possible team against a Premier League outfit.8 -

Absolutely play the strongest team possible. Wonder if there's any chance of Edwards making the bench?0

We should play the strongest side without risking any player that may need/benefit from rest and who may be crucial in the battle to retain our place in the Championship, which is far more important than any cup game.0

Saw that and that's what made me think there may be a chance given it was a month ago. Would be good for him to get 30 minutes and be back ready for the two huge home games coming upfenaddick said:
Well he's definitely out on the grass as he's in a lovely social media video from just after the Birmingham game. I wouldn't risk him thoughCrispy said:Absolutely play the strongest team possible. Wonder if there's any chance of Edwards making the bench?0 -
I think that we should put out a team of academy players and out of favour first-teamers.
(I do not mean this in the slightest, but I'm bothered by a Charlton Life thread where everyone is getting along).13 -
Do it for the U21s where he won’t be turning at such full forceCrispy said:

The problem is that I'm not sure even Nathan Jones knows what our srrongest team is...
This is the squad I would play, if all fit (and available), and presuming we are allowed 9 subs?
Kaminski
Bree Gough Jones Bell Fullah
Coventry Rankin-Costello Carey
Leaburn Kelman
Subs: Mannion, Gillesphey, TC, Docherty, Tanto, Apter, Knibbs, Berry, Rousillion
If Bree isn't allowed to play, start Apter and Rousillion, push Fullah to the bench and bring in a youngster to make up numbers.0 -
Not sure bringing Edwards on for the last 30 just as Chelsea bring on Garnacho or Estevao off the bench will do him much favours.1

It's a no brainer for me. I hate the way that successive managers have disrespected this competition, the paying fans and our history as one time cup winners. The FA Cup isn't some sort of optional extra that we might take seriously if it suits us. It is, or rather, should be a key competition for us. We should always play our strongest team in it.7
-
I’m seeing this as an opportunity to give key players a rest and recuperation time!Absolutely no need to risk players, especially against what is likely to be a very strong side (LRs first game) or a team of kids keen to impress (eager and dangerous).
a good opportunity to bed in/give debuts to some youngsters too - Gough, Laq, Rylah etc - as well as minutes to bit part players.
league HAS to take priority!8
