We worked hard but I think we feared to press them, the low block left us defending too deep and with no real out.  When Doc slammed into the first challenge I smiled, shame we couldn't maintain that but hey ho.  Every game at The Valley is an experience and part of me.

NJ in his post match interview is either sending a message to the fans to say don’t worry we know we need players and we’re working on it, or he’s sending a message to the owners to get the money out, hope it’s the former. The club are in a good position to consolidate this season but they need to act aggressively on it.
Or maybe just reviewing the game, and not “sending messages” to anyone…
Talking about needing a good window isn’t reviewing the game he did review the game by expressing his disappointment about how we defended the 2nd and 3rd goals, so what’s you’re point.
My point is that he doesn’t need to “send messages” through an interview, and therefore he wasn’t.
I was making an observation that had no right or wrong answer, I will try to run it by you before posting next time so’s not to irk you so much.

You weren’t making an observation that had no right or wrong answer. You stated that he was “sending a message” to at least one of two groups. On that basis, it might be best if you run things past me next time.

Stoke beating cov yest means that our game with them on 14 feb is off much chance assuming Portsmouth don’t beat arsenal today that they might try and put that re arranged game in there instead?

Not that it matters but thought it was a definite penalty at the time. I was wrong there. Seen it back this morning and Mannion gets the ball.
  • Huge gulf in class but 3-1 flattered Chelsea.

Interesting post match analysis from Kim Grant, which was pretty much how I saw the game too.

My honest thoughts watching my former club Charlton Athletic FC tonight 😫🤬🙌

First of all, I can’t fault the effort. The lads worked and tried. But effort on its own isn’t enough, especially in a cup game at home, in front of the biggest crowd we’ve had for a long time.

We gave Chelsea Football Club far too much respect in the first half. We played too deep, sat off them, and reacted instead of being brave on the ball. I fully respect the level of the opponent, but that can’t mean fear.

Apart from Leaburn, who carried real threat, and Mannion in goal, we didn’t do enough to hurt them. We used a lot of energy, but not in an effective way.

The stats tell the story. We barely had the ball, Chelsea created far better chances, and our collective defending — especially recovery from midfield — was poor. We spent most of the game chasing. From around 70 minutes, the energy dropped completely. That’s what happens when you press without structure or cohesion, and when transitions after losing the ball aren’t right. Counter-attacking was almost non-existent.

Defensively, it was all over the place. Standing off players instead of pressing the ball. Half the team stepping out, half dropping in. No togetherness. When you look at where we are in the league, defending like that explains why results have been difficult.

Set pieces were another big problem. The defensive line was a mess — half going out, half going in. No clarity, no control. At this level, you can’t defend set pieces like that and expect to survive.

Going forward, we were too predictable. I didn’t see overlaps, third-man runs, rotation, or real link play around the box. We played far too deep, which made everything harder. There were spaces to get on the ball and hurt them, but we didn’t recognise or use the pockets.

This is a cup game. A one-off. Whether you lose 10–0 or 1–0, you go for it. You press high with balance and cohesion, play on the front foot, show bravery, want the ball in tight areas, and try to control the game. At home, in front of your fans, you have to want to impose yourself.

I’m not questioning the desire — the lads worked. But the set-up, defensive organisation, and lack of cohesion made it very difficult.

There are good players in that squad. Real potential. But unless the team defends and plays together properly, results like this won’t be a surprise
Love the way he says “we”

Nobody else had an issue with it , they either disagreed without any bother or just skipped over it. I’m telling you I was making an observation as I’m the one who wrote it. If you don’t like it just skip my posts instead of telling people what they are doing.its not even a big deal.

@golfaddick spurs was 1-1 at WHL and the second snow affected game was at the Valley and was 1985 winners had Liverpool live away on the Sunday (which would have been massive for us )
@Raith_C_Chattonell think you asked about cup shocks we done Blackburn in the fa cup (were they prem league champions)and Sheffield Wednesday (i think) when they were prem and us second tier
@Off_it quite A few Chelsea I looked to see who had a photo with hasselbank as the gauge .
No one jumped up when they scored so all on best behaviour I had 3 Chelsea youngsters in my group and they knew to stfu .
lounge had 140 ish against Coventry and nearer 220 tonight .

hopefully the ill fella is fine but his injury time cost us 😉

as usual the failure of the scum and palace brings the only footballing joy but knowing palace can mix it with Chelsea’s first team makes me feel sick and confirms why I can never watch a game with them until the last few mins when they’re losing , light years away from us .

i’m jut a miserable twunt but all the daytrippers singing the play off songs “the reds are going up” yep right o can clear off , musical chairs and fannying around , roads busy as fuck that late on and just people , nope not for me
championship will do , wanky kick off times and tourists and half and half scarves not for me , the kids better not have got me one but there was some disappearing when we got to the ground .
give me 538 Charlton freaks at a snowy freezing Blackburn  away Over the circus and fireworks and lighshow gimmicks

some YouTuber was sat near us apparently the kids recognised him big John a goalkeeper

Chelsea had two (motor vehicle) coaches their entourage was ridiculous more hangers on than you could believe , they asked for 20 of their back room staff to have access to the tunnel , they asked for a 55 inch plasma in the changing room bunch of cnuts fuck em .

Roman Abramovich ,  fuck off putins puppet and the club built on Russian blood money
    fucking hate chelsea

Is that the Vista Lounge? 140 vs 220

A disappointing evening. We were, unsurprisingly, outclassed by Chelsea but the final scoreline flattered them. Their second and third goals were very soft and the two in injury time, when we looked out on our feet, rubbed salt in the wounds.

Leaburn had a fine match, as did Lloyd Jones and Bell, whose injury didn’t look good. I thought that young Keenan Gough also acquited himself well.

Let’s hope we can get some reinforcements through the door in the next week or so, together with the return of at least some of the walking wounded. We are certainly going to need them with a series of demanding fixtures coming up.
Disappointing? It was Chelsea we played and the scoreline flattered them. What did you expect?
Are you suggesting that he shouldn't be disappointed? If so, should he be more furious or more accepting?

A bit too much credit being given to our performance in my opinion. Massive task and one we were never likely to overcome but we didn't make it anywhere near difficult enough for them, especially seeing as we were at home.
  • Not the biggest NJ fan but no way am I going to criticise him for setting up defensively against Chelsea.

Could be argued the plan worked for 44mins.

It’s hard enough playing these teams but you just need the ref to get simple decisions correct .. we suffered because of this at Pompey and Coventry and last night when the Chelsea number 5 already on a yellow makes a worse foul and nothing .. not saying we would have won but would have made it interesting with Chelsea down to 10 with the score at 0-0 …..

seeing the goals again on MOTD .. you could say first goal two defenders go for the same ball , Bell miss heads it straight across his own box ? Second again Campbell falling asleep not reading the game like Coventry at home lost his man then needlessly hacked him down from the free kick goal .. and the third goal Mannion got to hold the ball was not difficult ….

I hate modern day football & pity all those of you born after 2000.

40 years ago we would have attacked them from the off. Keeper would have kicked the ball downfield & our front men would have fought for the ball. Chelsea would then attack & would probably score. But they wouldn't spend 10 mins passing it fucking sideways going nowhere.

I remember the FA Cup tie against Spurs in 1981. Held them a draw at The Valley & narrowly lost at WHL. (There were replays in those days & it was delayed a few times due to heavy snow).  None of this keep ball for 10 mins looking for an opening.

This evening was a poor advertisement for football.imo.

i don't disagree re the football and tactics but weren't that the other way round? - i went to WHL, we got a draw and then lost to them at home - the other bit that has changed is the behaviour off the field - i remember garth crooks being pelted with bananas thrown onto the pitch and a big ruck with spurs behind the covered end

I’m mixed on Mannion. He dealt well with Chelsea’s long-range efforts, pulling off some impressive flying saves, but anything low seemed to get parried back into danger and cause havoc in the six-yard box. I also thought he could have done better with the third goal — I’m not quite sure how he ended up blocking the initial shot with his legs, which is what led to it in the first place.
    He’s been training with Kaminski…😉😆

Who will probably beat Mansfield today
  • Got to be honest I was expecting this sort of scoreline although 5th was never a pen. I was a bit disappointed how much we just hammered the ball away with no thought. When we did put some moves together we looked good & worried their defence but you need to keep the ball to do that. If  they haven’t got the ball then they can’t hurt you. Too many times we were dropping deep & it was just a matter of time before they scored. Mannion deserves to keep his place & Leaburn was excellent. I’m confident we are staying up but we definitely need reinforcements. Anyway, we rarely do cup runs so what’s new ? Onwards & upwards.

Are people seriously talking about Chelsea playing a reserve team? It's Chelsea, they have about 500 first team players in their squad, that's their whole business plan. This is a club that could afford to leave the likes of Cole Palmer out of their Europa Conference squad altogether in the group stages and still win the trophy. If they had played their academy then I might have understood people being upset but there was not a single player in that 11 without Premier League experience and as the game went on and our players went down injured they only brought on better and better players. There were no debuts for Chelsea yesterday, Acheampong was their only academy player and he has 8 Premier League appearances this season. There was hundreds of millions of talent in that starting 11 and then they brought £300m worth of players on off the bench. And people are moaning about losing to a reserve side. Bloody hell.
Gary, having read through these posts, the inference that this was a Chelsea reserve team is a way of directing criticism at Charlton for having the temerity to lose 5-1 and be outplayed for large parts of the game. They, or he, has even taken to moaning about the pyrotechnics, a gimmick yes but it created an atmosphere immediately after to lift the supporters, it worked last year against Wycombe, lots of fans enjoyed it then so why not. Those same people can't see any positives, if you asked the players then they would tell you that they would want try against the best, Miles Leaburn, Tyreece Campbell, Connor Coventry, Amari Bell and Will Mannion did very well against world class opposition, yes world class, not my words but Nathan Jones. One thing that the the critics have forgotten in their description of Chelsea is that Chelsea do not have or buy reserve players, most of their academy players are loaned out.

The only "academy" kid they had in their lineup was Achampong , the rest were all senior players with plenty of senior experience. The fact they had to bring on Neto,Delap and Enzo to make it comfortable should be a positive.

The financial gap to the Prem is absolutely terrifying though. I don't even know how we'd even compete if we ever got up there and that's not just looking at the Chelsea squad , that's throughout the league. The money is just out of control.

One of the benefits of turnstiles in the west not being open, and the subsequent very long queues, was that I missed the pre match “entertainment”.

Oh for the days of a marching band 😊.

And of real people taking your ticket. I did a magical mystery tour trying to get parked then queued for what seemed an eternity to go through the turnstile. The stewards were overwhelmed and every tenth person couldn’t get their tickets to work - got to my seat bang on eight.

I wasn’t expecting to be able to go, brought tickets late and ended up right up near the Chelsea “fans”  (I had forgotten how truly obnoxious they are - easily up there with the Spuds 🥔). Between them and some of our own “fans” who looked liked they were on day release, scuffling with two Chelsea idiots who were sat in the West Stand and daft enough to boo when Leaburn scored, it was a delightful experience.

    PWR.

Don't know what to think after that. My emotions are all over the place. Angry, annoyed, pissed off and feeling sorry for the lads - didn't deserve that scoreline at the end.

Will need to cool down before I post sensibly but all I will say is this.....we certainly need a LWB by next Saturday.

Oh......and the club is a shambles. Toilet block in the AC stand had a floor full of piss. Cant use 2 of the cubicles or the far end urinal unless you want to be able deep in the stuff.

Utterly shambolic on & off the pitch.

Might want to look at your fellow fans for that.
Do we not have stewards or stadium staff who can sort it out during the game ? This is 2025. ....not 1975.
Can fellow fans not act like normal human beings and not piss all over the floor?
They didn't piss on the floor. The urinal got block & overflowed. I could see that when I went in before the game around  9.40pm. Was 10x worse when I went back in again after the game had finished.
It has been like that for months now. It really is a disgrace.
Has anyone previously reported it / complained to the club?

Whilst the club should proactively check / manage it’s also true that they can’t fix what they don’t know about / is annoying people.

I have the same position on graffiti and broken pavements etc in the borough - report it and make it known. Don’t give them the wriggle room to ignore.

I do find it odd that for people that apparently love this club etc, quite a few on here, find it so easy to criticise, the club, manager, players so often and so easily. Now there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism but to just complain about everything makes me wonder why they bother. The club are on an upward trajectory why not enjoy the ride because things have been a lot worse.
