Agreed to a point however it’s not unreasonable to expect to be able to get through the turnstile, have a drink and a bite to eat and be able to use working toilets. Personally I hate all the varied kick off times too.Sword65pf said:I do find it odd that for people that apparently love this club etc, quite a few on here, find it so easy to criticise, the club, manager, players so often and so easily. The club are on an upward trajectory why not enjoy the ride because things have been a lot worse.7 -
Just for reference, this is the shot map when we stood offfenaddick said:I find the “we stood off them too much” thing mad. When we stood off them we held them at bay for almost the whole half. They had a lot of shots but they were long range and blocked or relatively comfortable saves for Mannion. When we opened up a bit more and got in their faces we left gaps for them to exploit. It’s like none of you remember Southampton, Stoke or Coventry away where we were aggressive and picked apart by squads a lot less talented than Chelsea’s.
And this is for when we didn't (with tired legs etc.). Give them space behind and they will exploit it

The thing i don't understand is why, when we brought kelman, doc and cov off, we didn't take Bell off - surely he's the player we need to rest / protect the most? I think we had a duty to the players and fans to go full strength, i've no complaints about that but moving him up to LWB has compounded it - no way should we be playing him there with his injury issues - everything else is easily moved on from but i can see Bell being out for at least 6 weeks now and we could have done better in avoiding that.15

Just one other thing about the pre-match arrangements and Pyrotechnics. On the 7th January the clubs official site released 'Information for supporters attending Chelsea Tie' Ed Warrick is part of a video presentation, on that message, it specifically asks supporters to be in their seats earlier than usual because of the crowds expected, there is even a picture of the pyrotechnics to give you a clue as to what may happen pre-match, the bars stopped serving 30 mins before the kick off so you could drink up, get to the turnstile and get to your seat. I drove up from Chartham for the game, parked up at Flamstead road walked down to Bartrams, got in after a little wait and had a Peroni top, and then went to upper tier 13 gate and was in my seat ten minutes before kick off. My point being is that if I can do that then so can you, I do it most games, it's my ritual, I actually love my football club for all it's faults and I will keep making that journey and make sure I'm there ready for my Peroni top and in my seat ready to cheer the boys on, I would suggest that those of you who see my football club as just a verbal punch bag should fuck off and support some other team, I understand Chelsea reserves are looking for supporters.5

I think that’s down to the individual and what you go to football for. Personally I don’t eat or drink in the stadium, I don’t often queue for long and I’m patient, covered end toilets you have to wait for a bit but are ok, not saying others experience is acceptable by the way. Modern football is what it is, the club would have been happy for the extra revenue and are not going to say no thanks.IAgree said:

well said - i got there just gone 5 as i expected big queues to get in the fans bar - anybody getting there anything less than half hour before kick off and not expecting problems parking or queuing is frankly just a bit thickBailey said:Just one other thing about the pre-match arrangements and Pyrotechnics. I enjoyed the evening and thought we did okay. The gulf in class between the two teams was huge; you play an aggressive high press against a team of that quality and you get picked apart. At times one Chelsea player would dance around two or three Charlton players as if they weren't there. As others have said, it's crucial we now bring in defensive reinforcements before Sheffield United.
I thought this was quite spooky:

The financial gap to the Prem is absolutely terrifying though. I don't even know how we'd even compete if we ever got up there and that's not just looking at the Chelsea squad , that's throughout the league. The money is just out of control.
We were up against a club with a budget and squad larger than many countries' GDPs. 5-1 before the game would have been a likely scoreline. For the deluded among us, myself included, this confirms we are nearer to Bromley than we are to the PL. The way it happened left a bitter taste, the non free kick, the dodgy penalty, various rubs of the green in their favour. Also I didn't see the last 2 goals due to fog so they don't count... Anyways what's more worrying is Bell and TC. Hopefully NJ was being precautionary. Yea we'd have all loved a cup run but getting to a quarter final and losing plus getting relegated is not worth it.2 -

Every time we have conceded 3 or more this season (or lost last minute) a Palace twerp bombards my WhatsApp, weirdly he chose not to after this game!
Beforehand I thought our biggest ever loss was a possibility. This may have been Chelsea reserves but their starting 11 cost £325M or so (doesn't even include the first team era on the bench), our starting 11 was made up for 10 frees or youth players and Kelman. The defense had a kid making his second start and a winger. The size of Chelsea's squad makes them the worst PL team to be picked against IMO as they can rest so many yet put out such an expensive bunch.
Game itself, not watched back so only my thoughts from the stadium without benefit of replays. Thought we contained well first half, the timing of their first was gutting.
The second was far too easy, I was feeling relaxed at the corner as our team had height, we should have defended that better.
For the third, why doesn't Coventry pull Garnacho back/smash him like Docherty did when picking up a booking in the first half. It was clear we were hugely exposed. He's done that before this season, he's too much like Captain clean shirts Holland. Mannion then looked like he messed up the shot.
Even then, we should have had a pen at 3-1 which would have made the game more interesting. Instead the ref gives a non pen to them at the end. Typical bollox from officials.
Ultimately though, the 5-1 didn't flatter them. Shame about Bell and TC. People will say Jones shouldn't have played Bell (or at least moved him to LBk and maybe it would have meant he was ok for another week or two, but he is just injury prone and so it would have happened again soon enough I fear.
Onto the league and back to the transfer window.

Is it Coventry? Because he's not even the right side of Tosin before the set piece is played, so I assumed he was acting as the first man.fenaddick said:
Coventry, he gets pushed out the way. Complete mismatch and bad planningChunes said:I was disappointed that we weren't more up for it. Did anyone see who was supposed to be marking Tosin for their second? Such a poor goal to concede.
Saturday 8pm kick offs can get in the bin.

With what in defense?LargeAddick said:PWR. Good God those two commentators were blowing smoke up Chelsea’s arse all game. Their players should look good, the value of their matchday squad was what, 400m? Caicado alone cost 115m. Tossers.
As for us. Thought we did ok. 5-1 flattered them, 3-1 would have been fair. Mannion did well, Gough too. Leaburn MOTM for us. Bell’s injury a real blow, can’t see that being a quick fix. Lloydy kicked the ground, wasn’t fouled, no pen. Mannion got the ball before the man, no pen, but what a surprise it was given.
Back to the league which is way more important. That’s it.0 -
Not disappointed with the result, but with the score.1

And Achampong is an England U21 international, he has been in every age group international team.MarcusH26 said:The only "academy" kid they had in their lineup was Achampong , the rest were all senior players with plenty of senior experience. Anyway, hopefully next season, if we’re in the third round, we can look forward to let’s say WBA away, and if we get relegated, we can go out in the first round to Huddersfield at home1
-
Having watched back the highlights, the defending for all the goals was pretty woeful.1
-
Yeah it just feels like a completely different game against a side like that when we've got 3 academy kids and only Kelman starting who cost a transfer fee that's probably less than Chelsea's starting XIs weekly wages combined.msomerton said:

I get a couple of Pepsi max's and the odd bovril and go for the football, must be 15 years since I had a beer at a game, however for many the experience includes having a drink and a snack. I do think the Valley struggles with a capacity crowd however. An extra six thousand does push the facilities to the limits.Sword65pf said:

Like some are blaming Mannion for it you mean? What's the difference?Callumcafc said:
But some would blame Kaminski for it had he been in goal.Taxi_Lad said:Can’t see how mannion gets blame for 3rd goal. He saw it late as it went through LJs legs. Purely reactionary1 -

If it's not Coventry then there's no-one on Tosin at all which doesn't seem right, the next player is Carey who seems to be picking up Badiashile, who also loses his man, so all around it's very poor defending, you'd expect to have Jones and Bell on their 2 centre backs, not Coventry and CareyChunes said:

What I expected was to give them more of a game - rather like Cardiff City did last month in the Carabao Cup. Do you think that was unrealistic ?Major said:
Disappointing? It was Chelsea we played and the scoreline flattered them. What did you expect?Blucher said:A disappointing evening. We were, unsurprisingly, outclassed by Chelsea but the final scoreline flattered them. Their second and third goals were very soft and the two in injury time, when we looked out on our feet, rubbed salt in the wounds.Leaburn had a fine match, as did Lloyd Jones and Bell, whose injury didn’t look good. I thought that young Keenan Gough also acquited himself well.Let’s hope we can get some reinforcements through the door in the next week or so, together with the return of at least some of the walking wounded. We are certainly going to need them with a series of demanding fixtures coming up.5 -
From the people that sit round to me, the stadium, rag tag squad, and our genuine authentic fanbase felt proud to be Charlton last night.
Keep your modern Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Citys....plastic support these days cheering on a collection of mercenaries against another set of mercenaries each week surrounded by tourists and Johnny come lately types and people with no connection to the clubs or their areas.
My son said on way up to his first night game 'I love supporting Charlton" and as he sat between me and his uncle last night i told him we're a proper club with proper support no matter how unfashionable, unglamorous we are or poor the football is at times.
Chelsea battered us last night but not in a million years wouls I have wanted to be sat in the away end. More passion in celebrating our solitary goal in a 5 1 drubbing than i expect is seen at modern Stamford Bridge.
Most positive i felt after such a big loss and players did themselves proud.
Mist rolling in from the thames at the end was poetic.
Hopefully this will help boost us to go out and beat Sheffield united next week.
Great Charlton night despite the hammering.34 -
Think maybe we were trying to keep a line and leave their players standing in an offside position? Didn't really work or make sense to have Coventry on Tosin.Chunes said:

It was a painful result but a good learning experience for the boys.
For me it was noticeable how easy they could play out through our press, so the tactic of staying back was correct, even if ultimately unsuccessful.
For all the dribbling ability of Estevao, Gittens, etc. it was Chelsea's accurate passing that was their main weapon I thought.
Sheffield United should feel like a walk in the park in comparison.2 -

Agree totally, the amount of shots off target was outrageous, if this was not the case they would probably scored a few more.kentred2 said:
Wasn’t a humiliation? It wasn’t far off. They could easily have got 9 and the near post goal was arguably one of worst bits of Charlton defending ever.jose said:Despite the margin it wasn't a humiliation.Concern for the injuries.
Would Leaburn have enhanced his value after this evening? I thought he competed very very well against Premier class players. But the players tried hard and Leaburn gave them problems.
This was a training ground exercise for them.
