Winning the toss has given NZ a big advantage. Wicket will deteriorate so batting last could be a problem. Also bowling first in almost 40° heat will not be fun.

I agree with the first bit, but it’s not going to get anywhere near 40 degrees in Nottingham.

    I agree.
Still a good toss to win though in this heat.

Remember the temperatures that are declared are in the shade. Out in the middle I would expect them to be higher than the 35 or 36 that might be said for Nottingham today.

Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips now ruled out for NZ as well as Jamieson
And of course Williamson retired following the First Test

Especially if you haven't picked Rehan Ahmed

Although given the conditions, that's as well as Bashir, not instead of

Bold to assume we are not following on

I think we are only bowling Bashir so that we get the over rate up. ECB probably had enough of the point deductions for the Test Championship

Still wont get 30 overs in but likely to be 28.....so a lot better than normal.

Better for NZ to have Santner bowling on the final (and third) day than the second day!

We've been going through the motions here.

What might Australia and NZ start doing in this situation? For a start, they would ensure that their bowlers are bowling a consistent line and length and no width. And then they might just get Carey or Blundell to stand up and exert a bit of pressure albeit by dropping the pace down to say 80mph in doing so. Smith has to be up to doing that though.

Run fest at the moment. Thing is, can England do the same when they get chance to bat (which looks like late tomorrow).

I'm probably wrong, but I just have a nagging feeling Stokes will resign as captain after this test/series.

I hope I'm wrong as there really is nobody to replace him

In the same way as Matt Henry was educated in the art of bowling at Kent, Tom Latham learnt all there is to know about batting at the county.

The BBC really sticking the knife in with the missed LBW. Real time that looked like he squeezed it against his pad and very difficult to spot that it was pad first.

Even the comms on TMS sound quite bored

  • We're in danger of dropping to 5th in the World Test rankings after this game. Maybe we can play the Seychelles in a Hundred game, so we can be World Number 1 at that.

I fail to believe that Bashir is the BEST spinner we have. If he is, then God help us !

And you know that after they declare having made 600+  we will have 1 bad session & get reduced to 150/5 and the match will be done.

Two hours later and with the ball more than 60 overs old, we still haven't tried it

Future of test cricket looks really bleak.

Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about players coming through in county cricket, but we’re currently a poor side.

We are useless. Just give them the match & everyone can go home.

    Smith badly drops one.

Keeping on baking hot days like this separates the hardened full time keeper from the part timer.

Thought you were gonna make a point about global warming. As we will have to get used to days like these more often.

The England management, in picking him for the duration of the two years leading up to the Ashes, were "pot committed" to selecting him for that tour. The realisation that he wasn't ready because he'd been playing next to zero cricket anywhere hit them and they were forced to leave him out of the actual team. He's centrally contracted, been their so called "number one" and having not bowled him for a year, they had to now play him in order to justify that contract and assertion.

Tbh a big hammering might finally force them to get rid of those two arrogant plebs key and mccullum but very doubtful.
