Greatbl result for us - I really  thought they had that in the bag. Excellent work Fanny.  So all goes down to the wire. Please please please Kent. Don't be so 'Kentish' next time out.
  • Been busy most of the day, so that's a hilarious outcome. 23 runs short  :D

Well done to everyone who prayed to the rain gods today!

Northants may still have the last laugh but difficult to forget the game earlier in the season between the two counties at Canterbury in mid-April.

Northants well and truly had Kent on the (boundary) ropes but focused on personal milestones rather than pushing for the win.

Replying to Kent’s paltry 178, Northants batted on and on to reach 684-2 and had Kent at 253-5 before rain disrupted most of the final day and a draw was secured.

Fingers crossed Kent can do it next week and whatever happens the county have well and truly restored pride in their supporters

286 all out. Northants 349 to win.

That's a big fourth innings target - I think it's looking good (or at least better) for Derbyshire.

    Never in doubt!

(well done Fanny and all the rain dancers).

In our hands to return to where we belong :)

So, just to be clear, Kent are now 4 points ahead of Northants and will get promoted should they beat Gloucs and take 4 bonus points in total.
Just to be even clearer. We only have to match, result wise, what Northants do and take 4 bonus points less than they do e.g. if both teams draw and Northants get 7 bonus points then we will need to draw too and take 3 bonus points. We only have to be level on points to go up as the first tie-breaker is the number of wins and we would have two more than them:

Should any sides in the Championship table be equal on points, the following tie-breakers will be applied in the order stated: most wins, fewest losses, team achieving most points in contests between teams level on points (over-rate penalties shall be included in this calculation), most wickets taken, most runs scored.

Nah, it will be because we got more points than you did and we won more games than you did.

The County Championship started on 3rd April and officially finishes on 27th September. It is going to take 175 days to play just 14 games.

Some 50 years ago, in 1976, the CC lasted from 28th April to 10th September. That's 42 less days but they also, at 20 games, played 6 more matches.

Just further evidence of the disdain the ECB have for the County Championship.

No proper cricket in August says it all for me.
  • Well, both Middx teams won their 50 over Finals today so will be up for finishing the season on a high when the men welcome Northants to Lords on Thursday...we hope .

So , 2 streams to be glued to for 4 days although I won't be able to see much on Friday, sadly. Poor planning on my behalf.

    Silly Fanny.

Squad of 14 for tomorrow. I've already said that I would hope that we can play Foreman, Stewart and Ekansh by asking the latter to open. That would mean leaving Compton, Dawkins and Quinn out but would give us six bowlers and mean that we have a strong tail with Dudgeon and Milnes at 9/10.

No rain at Canterbury or Lords for the four days. No excuses.
  • Looking dry with pleasant temperatures for the next 4 days

Parky left out of the squad again

Parkinson has taken 9 wickets at 70.77 this season with an ER of 4.01 and can't bat. Foreman has taken 6 wickets at 44.50 with an ER of 3.26 and can bat. We're not going to produce a bunsen burner so if we do play at spinner it has to be Foreman.

Anyone know the reason for this round of games not starting on Tuesday as opposed to Thursday? The One Day Cup Final was on Sunday and the last round finished on Friday.

Maybe with the idea that days 3&4 are at the weekend, so might get some slightly higher attendances?
  • By starting on Thursday, good to "shock horror" have play at the weekend. A few more people will be tempted to come along, especially with the football international break.

I wasn't questioning the decision, but when a short term player is in the squad, and the contracted "lead spinner" isn't, that looks pretty terminal for Parky's future.

  • My predictions for this week

    At Canterbury
    Gloucs 245 all out
    Kent 249 all out
    Gloucs 208
    Kent 205-8
    Kent win by 2 wickets

    At Lords
    Northants 455-4 dec
    Middlesex 123 all out
Middlesex 95-9 when umpires J Tredwell and N Llong take the players off for bad light at 2:30pm.
    Game drawn

The minute Foreman was signed he became part of the squad and on a level playing field with Parkinson. What I could see happening, if we do offer Parkinson a contract, is him being utilised as a second spinner, unless he finds his form, in red ball and white ball too. The rumour previously put forward that Lintott would be signing doesn't really change that because both Foreman and Lintott turn the ball into the right hander and the only other one, apart from Parkinson, who turns it the other way in our squad is Jaydn who has taken a backward step this season mainly due to injury.

I thought Lintott was one of these that seems to happen a lot in county cricket , everyone knows the deal is done but no one will announce it before the end of the season even though it was confirmed months ago he's leaving Warwickshire.

Foreman's got to be worth a year's deal regardless of what happens with promotion, useful with the bat too.

Perhaps because the announcement of Lintott's signing might lead people to speculate about Parkinson's position. Even more so than currently.

  • 5 seamers feels OTT, especially with the lack of part time options like Joe Denly or Leaning.

Good start winning the toss. Leaving out Foreman, Stewart and Dawkins is a big call especially with a tail of Dudgeon, Milnes, Quinn and Ahmed.
