I think we’re preparing for league one next season.
…with loan signings that won’t be here? I think Jones is just a bad judge of player on average.

Positives and negatives for me.  The biggest negative is seeing 2 players we signed for fees in the summer not work out and having to be moved on.  It was always going to be a gamble as our approach was buy the perceived top end of league one talent and hope they can make the step up.  Depending on your position you could argue neither really got the chance to show us what they can do, particularly Apter for me, less so Tanto (personally I don’t think he did enough in the games he started to warrant a place in the starting XI).

The other negative is that seems everything is being worked out on the fly now and at face value, a predominantly used sub from a league one club coming in won’t set the pulses racing.

On the plus side, you could argue Jones and the recruiting team are responding to our abysmal run and trying to do things differently with this chap, and the other arrivals.  I think Clarke will be a decent addition, Dykes is a good option as a hold up man at this level and Chambers is at least able to play LWB and a square peg in a square hole.

For me they need to get Coady in and if possible get a central midfielder.  Chambers, Fevrier and to an extent Coady are all gambles, the first two based on age and stepping up to this level, the latter on the basis he may be a spent force.

I can’t say the way this season has panned out re: comings and goings looks like it’s been well thought out, Apter and Tanto are glaring examples of that, then you have to cover signings in Hernandez and Rousillon that for me have been a waste of time.  But, injuries have caught us cold and at the very least, it looks like we’re getting some sort of response.  Whether that’s the right response, we’ll know come early May.  Fingers crossed for this lad.  We need him, like Chambers to come in and add something
I wouldn't even try to see that as such a negative, disappointing yes for sure but I wouldn't dwell over it for long, It's football, deals don't work out, our 2 aren't the first and won't be the last. Football has changed considerably in this league over the years, yes we paid out fees but these fees in comparison to the rest of The Championship are small fees. They may seem large fees for us given we've hardly been big spenders for about 18 years or so but that says more about the state our club has been in while most other clubs in The Championship and a fair few in League One have been pushing these kind of fees about for years. They just feel high to us because we've been in League One with poor ownership for a long time. Some deals don't work out while other deals involving fees like Ramsay, Edwards do work out. Birmingham forking out £7m for one player is it? puts it all into perspective compared to the fees for Apter and Olaofe.

capable of brilliance and rubbish with the next touch - not ready for the championship - where's the arsenic tablets? thought we were clearing the decks ready for some proper players, not trying to make stockport stronger

Loaning players from league one is a special transfer tactic only performed by master negotiators.

Is this another impeccable window I see before me?
Portsmouth fans seem pretty happy with their loaned L1 winger to be fair

A complete punt, like the two we’ve loaned out. Not categorically better Nathan. Shitshow this is.
All signings are punts though. Carey was a free transfer, Small was rescued from the scrapheap, Ramsay was from L2 Harrogate, Jones a free from Cambridge. Our best signings are usually the unheralded cheapest ones, it's the ones we pay fees for that haven't worked out so far
Which is why we’re in a dogfight at the bottom.
We won a promotion eight months ago. What did you expect this season?

Not loaning out two key summer signings in January without (as of yet) replacing them with better.
Even though they clearly  weren’t working? Should we have just kept them on the bench and not done anything?

........ What I didn't expect was that our recruitment would be so misjudged that we're heading into the last third of the season on a downward trajectory whilst getting rid of two expensive signings who've either not delivered and/ or barely got a look in and are (so far) replacing them with punts.
Although it could be said, that if Tanto and Raptor have barely played, they won't be missed?  :)

Hard to get excited by someone who effectively has been a L1 squad player this season. When signing players from the division below you in January, generally you'd hope to be prising away one of their top players, someone their fans would be gutted to lose...
Although no club wants to lose their best players, which is why top players are either unavailable during the January window or cost a hugely inflated fee.

If this was wife swapping, you still get to enjoy a pleasant evening!

As for the business side, it makes sense. Tanto isn't a starter in our team. Fevrier isn't a starter in his team. The value of each player makes no difference as there isn't a sale going through. If we were trading on a perm deal, we'd be sayin that Tanto is a Championship player at a Championship club, and February is a League One player at a League One club. How they are valued is up to the deal makers.
As for the arrangement, we get much needed games into Tanto at a club he's happy to go to, and we get to try out another youngster from half a season and bid for him in the summer if he's any good.

    A savvy bit of business.
Savvy business for Stockport. They've received £2m for a player and got him back six months later.
Stockport didn't receive £2m for Tanto, did they?

It was reported as a total £1.5 million, inflated to take account that Stockport were obliged to pay Millwall more than £500k as a sell-on fee.

In any case, most transfer fees are instalment-based over the length of the contract.
Maybe part of the agreement with the loan swap of Tanto and Fevrier is even tied up with our instalment payments?

He's not afraid to use both feet.

Anyway, another left footer in the camp.

Make it make sense... We signed a winger and just loaned him to League One, so that we could sign a winger on loan from League One.

This is 100% Jones type of signing, and wants to turn him in to a player, but strange timing as we need players that championship ready.

All very strange from Jones. I still expect, Doc to go, and midfielder to come in, CB, LCB and a quick forward for me has to happen for us to stay up

    Brilliant thinking by Stockport.
They get a player back who was excellent last season, who can fire them to promotion, whilst they loan out a player to gain champ experience, so he's chamioonship  ready when they get promoted. Add to the fact they pocketed decent money 6 months ago from us.

They must feel they're mugging us off! 😂

I hope JF gives us that balance, power, and pace that we've been missing since TA went to Preston. Good luck fella.

Chuffed with this.  He’s actually very decent.  Could be any number of reasons why he hasn’t played much at Stockport this season Or he could just be home sick a bit like Rob Apter maybe wants to go back up north.  I have had an eye on him for awhile and he is fast and strong and could give us something different.

Give him a chance.  I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the fact there is no option to buy, it’s probably just Stockport keeping their options open. should they get promoted

If he plays well and they don’t go up, he will join us I expect.  Sounds to me like he is more suited to playing as a wing back than Apter who is not strong enough.
So in reality we should've bought him for 1.5m instead of Tanto and then saved 2m on Apter?
Apter could play as an attacking midfielder and I would have liked to see him there however Carey probably surprised a few with his early season form.

by the time Carey’s form dipped a bit I expect Apter’s toys had already been launched from the pram (or perhaps he is genuinely homesick).

I don’t think Apter is a lost cause just yet but it may be another Charlie Kirk situation.  Nobody knows really.  We just have to trust the process and the decision makers
@Swisdom , out of interest, which club are you with? I assume you have an official representative pass to get you into matches? For those who are unaware, the Chief Scout will book tickets in advance of the game you are attending. All clubs look after visiting scouts as official guests and often put them in the Director Box. But you have to show an official pass to verify who you are.

Not sure at all how to feel about this.

I identified him as a good Small replacement back in May, but that was before I realised the gulf in difference between both leagues, it's wider than I expected, specifically for attackers.

He looks like he could play our 'system' and he looks like a Nathan Jones type player with his physique and abilities, but so did Tanto.

It's quite concerning we are staring relegation in the face, and one of our answers so far is to loan out Tanto to Stockport who was one of their better players, and now take one of their players in Fev who doesn't even consistently play, and their fans don't seem to bothered by.

Welcome to the lad, but you can see why there are concerns. Let's hope he surprises us all, cause my word we need some players in who can step up and make a difference.

A few teams are going for it though, not just Stockport. Bolton have made good signings, Huddersfield just spent a million on Mumba. They can't all go up because Cardiff are surely going to get one promotion spot.

Also i remember last January, most people on here thought Huddersfield would be a good bet for promotion after they spent 3.5m on Taylor and Charles. They didn't even make the play offs and a year later Taylor is on loan at Wigan.

Feels a bit like we were letting Tanto go to Stockport and just asked them who they could throw in to sweeten the deal. So we end up with a guy who wasn’t staring in L1 and has never played a match at our level.

Maybe he doesn’t quite fit their system and they were desperate to secure Tanto?

Interesting you say that as my interpretation was Small really wasn’t a player / type he wanted to build on, bought a completely different style to replace, and has now brought in what I expect to be a less ability version of Small (hope I’m wrong on the less ability bit)

Interesting that a few teams in the promotion mixer are having a determined shot at getting up

meanwhile we’re already up and as it stands for another 9 days at least are out of the relegation zone but don’t appear to value the place we already have as much as those below us who want it

What the fuck are we doing here
There is no truth to the post you’re quoting, just someone trying to get a few LOLs.

Edun plays LWB and Stockport have never played Fevrier there in two years.
So do you think we will do differently & play him at LWB  ?   Is NJ a better tactician than Dave Challinor  ?

FWIW I think he will share the LWB position with Chambers for the next month or so. Or is Chambers replacement if he breaks down.
I think he shares RWB with Clarke (who will also share RCB with Ramsay) and Chambers plays LWB, with Fevrier and Bell available as LWB alternatives if Chambers did get injured.
Agree. And given the above I'd prefer a LB rather than Coady tbh. Unless Jones is genuinely crocked for a chunk of time.

    NTT20 fairly underwhelmed

    🔴 Jayden Fevrier (RWB/RW) - [Stockport - Charlton] - Loan
This is Part One of ‘Loanee Swapsies’ between Charlton and Stockport. The Addicks are playing poorly at both ends of the pitch and need to find a better balance. At right wing-back, Harry Clarke is the current starter, James Bree is back at Southampton, and Rob Apter has been sent to Bolton (more on that later). Nathan Jones may not have liked what he saw from Apter, but memories of Thierry Small’s interpretation of a hybrid RW/RWB role in last season’s promotion clearly linger – he wants a tricky dribbler available to him, and Fevrier is exactly that.

As with Apter, and with Olaofe (more on that later, too), there’s a big question mark around whether or not Fevrier can step up. In 18 months at League One level, he has been patchy. One particularly good spell towards the end of last season didn’t roll over into this campaign. It would be a surprise to see him used as anything other than a bench option, and we may even see him feature a little on his ‘natural’ left side. But it’s hard to see Fevrier having much more impact than Apter.
