I have a good feeling for winning three points in this game, which rarely happens when I'm that positive. Hopefully we have enough on this occasion though. Won't be too unhappy to wake up and see we've drawn though. Just can't afford to give away the full three points like we did against Pompey. All the best with surgery @ForeverAddickted5

I agree for West Brom but for Charlton it's get a positive result which would be preferably a win but a draw would keep the gap to 6 points with a 7 plus goal advantage with a dozen games to go.
I want Charlton to play on the front foot and get Clarke and Chambers forward down the flanks to feed Dykes/Leaburn and Carey.
Cliché time: we need the best version of ourselves to turn up tonight at 'The Hawthorns'

Oh no - back to the "free-hit" syndrome again! I Think I prefer the 'must win' analogy?swords_alive said:Interesting argument. Perhaps you're all relying on the league table as some kind of fixed reality when in fact it's just a social construct being misinterpreted. What we actually need to be concerned with is getting a better result at West brom than other (current) relegation rivals;
So, Oxford and blacburn both lost there.
Portsmouth and Leicester drew.
So it would be a massive 3 points if we got them. And it's almost a free hit as no-one else got more than a point there anyway. Feels better looking at it more objectively doesn't it.
Either way I think its a game that we need to just turn up and do our jolly old best in....1 -
Free- hit 2 must win 1 fair result. I'll take it6

I realised this week I've never seen Charlton win a play off final and stay up the following season.
Absolutely bricking tonight. The fact West Brom are out of form does nothing to calm my nerves.

The Baggies being bang out of from makes me more nervous for some reason than if we were playing a side who had middling form recently.
I don't know why, but I suspect it's my potentially incorrect assumption??? that we seem to turn up more in games we're not expected to get anything from. NJ sides don't do well when favourites do they?
Oh I don't know. Hiding behind the sofa this evening breathing in to a paper bag3 -
As good as the point was on Saturday, battling performance etc, Jones has to have a plan to win this game. I think the fact WBA are desperate and have a very unhappy fan base could play into Jones ball. If we sit back, keep it tight and frustrate them, the longer it goes on, the more chance we have of drawing them out, as they have no option but to win, even a draw given the fact they can pull us back to within 2 points, isn’t enough with games running out.
I see a similar set up to Saturday, but my only wish here is that Jones has told them to be a bit more aggressive with the ball. We’ve screwed up every game against fellow relegation strugglers bar Oxford, to not get a win here would be very poor. It’s not the end of the world if we pick up a point, but realistically, with our fixtures remaining, if Jones hasn’t picked this one out as one to win, that’s criminal.A win tonight would almost certainly see us safe imo with 7 more points needed. Big game. Hopefully they’ll treat it with more respect than Pompey7 -
Obviously been a terrible appointment but in fairness he has coached at the top level and worked with big name players at Man Utd which will give him some credibility. I think it might just be a classic case of a good coach but not a good managerOrmiston_Addick said:I was stunned when WBA brought this bloke in as their coach, absolutely ridiculous to bring in a rookie manager at this level of the game, especially after what happened with Ryan Mason!
This is basically one of the biggest leagues in Europe, you are dealing with some very well paid and experienced players and if you don't have their respect then you are going to be bang in trouble.
We all saw that with poor Will Still at Saints and we had the same experience with the succession of continental shite-bags that Duchatelet brought in, if you don't have the respect of the dressing room then you are done for.
With the best will in the world, what credibility does this bloke have as a manager with the likes of Krystan Bielek and the senior WBA players?
Having said all that they will probably beat us 3-0 now!Believe he was their second choice in the summer when they went with Mason, the guy who made both hires has recently been moved on and if they don’t beat us Ramsay will shortly meet the same fate2 -
The other fixtures are definitely making me think that this is even more of a must win.
Can See:
Blackburn beating Bristol City.
Norwich beating Wednesday.
Oxford getting at least a point at Stoke.2 -

I think we all know Nathan Jones well enough by now to know exactly how he’ll set up for this match. We have a point at the start of the game and he’ll be determined that’s the least we’ll have at the end. Same tactics as at Southampton.5

The Blackburn game is less likely. They may have won the other night but they were still pretty bad. Strangely enough, Preston was just as bad and look where they are.CafcSteve said:The other fixtures are definitely making me think that this is even more of a must win.

It really isn't a must-win game. If we draw we're still six points ahead of them with no less than 12 games still to play.
If we can avoid losing, personally I'll be very happy with that.

After dropping points at home to Oxford on Saturday, hopefully Boro will be on it tonight. They'll have targeted six points from these two games so for them nothing less than a win suffices.NabySarr said:

I just feel we need more than 28.2% of the possession against WBA and whether a quick counter attack or multi passes (dream on Sam !) I want CAFC to be front footed and don't allow them 71.8 % possession as Saints had as they might just get lucky with a deflection or good strike where Kaminski is unsighted because of the bodies in front of him.
This is such an important game for both sides and we need to create and take our chances tonight so we can 'enjoy' the rest of the season looking up not down IF the football gods are on our side 🤞🏼

1-0 Charlton... not sure if we've capable of winning more comfortably.
3 pts is a must tonight, then 3 more each at Oxford and Wendies and we'll be there.3 -
Since we both score a goal a game ...can I suggest a 1-1 is the best bet in town2
-
But West Brom are not the side that Southampton are. Although I think first and foremost we’ll set up defensively, I do think we’ll see more of the ball than we do against the very good sides.soapboxsam said:ShootersHillGuru said:I think we all know Nathan Jones well enough by now to know exactly how he’ll set up for this match. I'll happily take a draw tonight. It keeps West Brom 6 points behind us, and presuming Leicester don't win at Boro which they shouldn't, they don't get any closer either. If we can win however, we are within touching distance of safety.3
-
I agree with this whole heartedly. The only thing we have to focus on is ourselves and each game as it comes. Just keep grinding out the points we can and keep our defence strong and I am sure we'll do enough. Will it be uncomfortably close? Probably.DOUCHER said:The 'must win' thing has been put to bed - there's little logic in which games we win, lose or draw so anybody banging on about that still is on a wind up. We're a team who were smashed at home by pompey and beat ipswich 3-0 away! If we let a goal in early tomorrow, i think we could take a pasting. If we hold out til half time we could easily win it. We are competing, that's the main thing and i think we are genuinely in with a chance of winning any game we play - the reverse is also true but overall we should grind enough points to stay up.2 -
It's a must win game because we must win some games between now & the end of the season.....and doing it against a team who haven't won in 5 and in that time have only scored 1 goal is easier than against Wrexham or Brum who are in great form and who can score for fun.kinveachyaddick said:It really isn't a must-win game. Tonight is another coinflip for me.
Our draw at Southampton wasn’t exciting, but it was both organised and disciplined. Carey once again snatched us a goal securing a point. We had chances to win it and lose it, which felt like a true reflection of our season.
West Brom come into this off the back of a defeat to Coventry. They concede more than we do and score at about the same rate. They have had the sort of season that feels somewhat unpredictable yet they can be dangerous. Jones will definitely set us up with this in mind.
Form wise in the last 5 games:
We have 8 points from 15 available, conceding 4 and scoring 5.
They have 3points from 15, conceding 8 and scoring just 1 goal.
We will likely stick with the familiar formula of staying compact, working relentlessly (if the players can be bothered), and hoping a single moment can supply us with a spark. This will be another tight, scrappy, finger chewing (Jones we're looking at you), type of evening.
West Brom 1–1 Charlton feels realistic. Though I could see us nick it by the single goal if our defence are on it.3 -
It simply depends on how much reality one puts upon the phrase “must win game”…..it’s a term fans of all sports will use to describe a very important game.
If we lose tonight yes it will be a hefty blow but by no means implies that we will be relegated.
It’s just a way of expressing it’s importance by using the phrase but in most cases by no means wholly accurate.0 -
Well, this is absolutely massive eh?1
-
Good luck with the operation FA.
Really nervous for tonight, as a win would put us 9 points clear of WBA, an almost unassailable gap, whereas a defeat would close the gap to just 3 points, and give them a massive confidence boost.
No game at this stage is a must win game, but realistically this is one we really should be targeting for a win, especially when you look at our next two opponents Wrexham and Brum, two teams bang in form, who strengthened really well in January. Followed by Boro away. That's a really tough run of games, one where we could easily lose at least two of them.
That doesn't mean going gungho tonight, but WBA are very different opponents to Soton, and carry way less goal threat. They've not scored for FOUR games.5 -
- West Brom have won just one of their last five home league games against Charlton (D1 L3), though this is the first time they’ve hosted them since a 2-2 draw in October 2019.
- Following their 1-0 win in November, Charlton are looking to complete the league double over West Brom for just the third time after 2002-03 and 1936-37.
- West Brom have won nine of their last 13 home league games against promoted sides (D2 L2), though failed to beat Birmingham in their only such game this season (1-1).
- West Brom have won just one of their last 12 midweek (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) league matches (D3 L8), beating Norwich 1-0 in October.
- Charlton have lost four of their last six midweek (Tues, Weds, Thurs) league games (W1 D1), with their one win in this run coming against Stoke earlier this month.

West Brom line up Will Still appointment as Eric Ramsay sack news emerges
Looks like he under extreme pressure tonight ..0
