Think Berry is getting off very lightly with his 'defending' for Rathbones goal. He played as a CM, not a forward and just let him make a ring around him.

A good performance but narrow defeat to a team bound for the playoffs. No ground made up by the closest teams below us.

We have points in the bank and a healthy gap. We have some winnable fixtures, some tough games and some in between.

It’s good to have an understanding of the data and what it forecasts but there’s a reason we don’t play 22 games and extrapolate from there. I’m sure the underlying data (and naked eye) would indicate we should’ve lost to Southampton and West Brom but at worst drawn with Wrexham.

Yesterday showed how poor our strikers are, they had plenty of crosses and balls into the box and fluffed every opportunity, as they have done in most of the games this season.
this leaves me with little confidence we are going to pull off the miracle of staying up.

Emotion parked. We're down aren't we. No margin left for improvement. Everything has been tried that i can think of. Except maybe Fullah? and something innovative like playing with an extra player instead of a goalkeeper? (In many games our keeper goes almost completely untested). The only other thing left to do it get bets on going down to ease the pain.

You can get 8/1 - how much have you had on?

It was a weird feeling to come away from the Valley feeling fairly satisfied despite Charlton losing. I think that’s down to a significantly better performance than I was fearing before the match, as well as none of our relegation rivals really gaining ground on us (not really counting Oxford).

Bumped into their fans at London Bridge. What an odd and awful lot. Not a Welsh accent among them. A bunch of dribble-mouthed crusty jugglers.
They were insufferable. Never had grief from any other fans after a game, did today though while on a train on my own.
Were you dressed as a sheep ?
No, but apparently calling one a sheep shsgging prick is racist, personally if of said ot was xenophobic, but didn't want to confuse.
"No, but apparently calling one a sheep shsgging prick is racist" I didn't but how is that racist ???

"personally if of said ot was xenophobic, but didn't want to confuse." Erm ...... you just have  :#
Im on heavy duty medication atm for depression, thought id just delete my post.

Thought the game was good, but had a very rough day mentally, when I probably should have just stayed at home with my family grieving. Ill try again in a few weeks.
Sorry to hear that mate & apologies if I've added to any distress  :(  Wasn't my intention to upset you. I hope that you're soon in a much better place. Best Wishes.

Put the same analysis into wba and liecester and they are both down

Good performance. Jones is correct about about finishing. Kelman was a bad buy and we are paying for it. He was meant to be the stand in for Godden and we are relying on a creative midfielder Carey to get a goal when he should be creating the assists for the strikers. We’re making the best of a bad summer window and if we stay up we need to shift Kelman on and throw some money at another striker….its a tough one though as they tend to cost a lot of money. Also if a striker is out there they will need balls from a creative midfielder (Carey is not that person). Jones has made the best of the players he has got. Ahadme was meant to be the replacement for alfie may. Kelman for Godden. Nathan needs to let someone else choose a striker.

The annoying thing with Berry's chance is that it was perfectly set for him to hit it with his stronger (right) foot, there was really no need to turn inside onto his left. And Clarke's miss was a shocker, looked back live but even worse on the highlights.
Probably wanted to make the Goalkeeper's job harder, he would have been on the penalty spot with the chance to shoot either side of him, had Berry taken it first time, the 'keeper would have known that his sole option was to get down to the left to save it

Only followed the game on the occasional skysports updates .. their pundit's comment (I paraphrase) that Charlton spent long periods well on top except for abysmal finishing seemed to sum up our season.  It seems we gave Wrexham a very hard time BUT still lost. To state the obvious, the search for and the signing of a consistent striker or two MUST be our priority over the summer, as must a total halt to the frequent signing of injury prone players, e.g. Burke  .. who decided to sign this injury prone waste of space ? .. not all his fault, but he has been a total waste of money .. Stop it !

8/1 is enticing.  I will likely stake 10 units of currency (never more than I can afford to lose- just enough to be noticed and punished by the football gods).

Can anyone tell me, did we play different tactics/formation today to explain the vast improvement, noticed more passing and wing backs getting forward more, thanks in advance.
Set up was broadly similar but not having two big lumps up front really helped us actually pass the ball more
3 main differences id say were:
TC started up top - always gives us more threat
    Berry started instead of Doc
We passed it around the back and on the deck a lot more rather than just launching it straight up top

and wrexham were a bit flacid

Seriously though, we at least missed Kaminski moving forward with the ball yesterday and playing him over Mannion or some kind of rush goalie would definitely help us. Question is has Jones got the minerals to recall Kaminski and give him the freedom to roam.

We need to keep the faith.

Yesterday's performance was the best I've seen for some considerable time against an in form team of very expensive players.

And agree, we matched them in all departments apart from scoring...what's new ?

Personally, I would have liked to see Miles enter the battle earlier as he's improved so much of late...when given the opportunity to show what he can do. But that's the gaffer's decision.

Play like that for the remainder of the season & I'd reckon we'll be safe before the final test v Swansea.

Wondering , unless I've missed it, who won MOM in the Lounges yesterday ?

    Collins for me.

Except we have got more points when playing turgid football, even recently that is true, on the few occasions we have had a lot of possession we look totally lost, just spend time passing the ball backwards.

Wrexham will be buzzing with that. Very frustrating to not have taken our chances, particularly first half but can’t fault the effort and endeavour. We’re a cobbled together championship side that will have succeeded if we stay up.

Love Collins Sichenje too. Loves to take a risk on the ball and in the tackle but has a lot of potential. Excited to see him grow.
Collins needs to learn quickly at this level you cannot be rash. He got away with not getting a yellow at Southampton, which changes the way he can play and he was at fault for the goal today. Came from him jumping in needlessly and their player is off down the wing. But this is the bonus of bringing him in early, he is will learn every game
Even after his ‘mistake’ we had enough to deal with what followed but didn’t. Two players on top of Rathbone and one, Berry, just dangled a leg at it.
I wasn't putting all of fault on him, you're correct in what you say, but they got in behind due to his poor and rash decision, but he is learning and looks overall a promising signing

I was dreading the game but thoroughly enjoyed it & thought we played really well.  Encouraging signs.

    Just wish we could finish

Sometimes you just don’t get the rub of the green. Another day Clark puts his chance away. TC doesn’t head over from 2 yards. Miles puts his away. Collins smashes the back of the net and we win 4-1 but we didn’t. That still doesn’t take away the fact that we saw a vastly improved performance and for all you doom mongers we will be absolutely fine this season

We could’ve played 10 hours of that game yesterday and not scored . Things just didn’t go are way with some of those headers towards the end.

Some of that performance was very static yesterday with so little movement. For large parts of the game when we had the ball it just looked like they had never played as a team before.

Not much to be done re the tactics until the end of the season. But they need to change going into the next. We need so dynamism to get the team going when we counter

Why wouldn’t he? Kaminski is injured, he wasn’t dropped
  • Think we will just about stay up but......
All of our current strikers need to be replaced as soon as the season is over.
People keep saying that they are not getting Service from midfield - yesterday proved that even when they do they still don't score.

Our great Academy hope, TC missed 2 good chances yesterday. A strike that he didn't connect with any power in the first half and an almost free header in the 2nd half. VERDICT - He will never score enough goals consistently  in any side above League 2 which in my opinion is his level. He is not strong enough although a nice lad. GET RID.

Kelman can score goals for the right team but that team is not Charlton. League 1 level at best. - GET RID.

Leaburn another Academy Lad is obviously well liked and has improved this year but that chance yesterday proved to me that he just hasn't got that killer instinct in front of goal which is a shame. If he carries on improving he could be a handy Championship squad player but that's all.

Godden - has had a prolific career and if he was 5 years younger our season would have been very different. Time to GET RID

Ahadme - Wasted a lot of money on him. Not his fault but can't even get regular games in League 1. GET RID.

Would love to be proved wrong if any are still at The Valley in August but lets get real they are simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Leaburn getting stick for his miss. Have I missed one or was this the chance taken off hi head by a defender?  If so, it was very good defending rather than a leaburn error
  • The one where it was crossed low into the box and he put over the bar.

Couldn't call that a miss, unlike Berry or Clarke, and for that matter TC, if it went in, it would have been some strike...

On a positive note we’re 18th and 7 points clear of the bottom 3 with arguably the worse frontline and midfield (except carey) in the Championship besides Sheffield Wednesday. Imagine where we can get to if we get some good quality players in those positions

The near post one is all I can remember. It would've been a great finish to stick it in from that angle.

Leaburns chance definitely wasn’t a sitter, with the speed of cross and angle. But was a chance.

The only thing you would rather have Ahadme for is to help you reach a high shelf in the supermarket.
