  • Pretty certain feedback from Cambridge fans was that LJ in a 2 was better than LJ in a 3.

I’m not going to hold pre season rustiness against him. Let’s see how it goes if we line up with a back four against Derby. His performances over the last two years have earned him the right to have a proper crack at it at Championship level.

You are aware we've had him longer than NJ? And was already looking the best CB in the club. Unless I'm missing something about Hector...
He had some absolute stinkers before Nathan Jones arrived .  He wasn’t alone that season, of course

It very much depends on style though. Jones would be absolutely fine in a 4 for a team that defends deeper.

The way we play though is a lot more aggressive without the ball than Cambridge, so he’s more likely to be caught out with a ball down the side of him than he would be in a 4 at Cambridge

I think generally he will be fine in a 4, especially as I can’t see our right back being too attacking whether it’s Ramsay or McNamara so the risk will be reduced

Jones is not very good in a two, and I'd be surprised if he is a starter for us when the season ends.
To be fair to him he has stepped up his game when he’s had to, hopefully he does it again, I think having Kemetio next to him may be a good thing.
Obviously I’m no tactician but I honestly don’t understand why players can’t play in different formations, it’s not rocket science or is it?

    Just asking.
Different formations effectively means different positions
Yes, of course, but that doesn’t explain why players can’t be coached to perform effectively in different positions?

Understanding that it’s not as simple but are we not the small fish in the Championship that Cambridge were in League One?

Whether we want to press or not, we will be expected to defend our box far more often than some other teams this season, by nature of being a smaller fish and having less of the ball.
  • I think transfer window wise, for us , it will be quiet this week.

Can see it hotting up in the last week of the window, with loans in, and out.

Will be surprised if any of our signings are for a transfer fee.
I think we’ll sign a player for decent money but only if that player is available. I think the club know exactly who they want and are prepared to pay but if it’s not to be we won’t move on to a plan b. It’ll be a loan that comes in late on.

Yes we do defend our box a lot more than other teams, and Jones is one of the best in the championship at that.

We still will want to be very aggressive without the ball at times, leaving big spaces behind our back line. I think we went away from that in the second half of last season, but we will definitely want to return to that now

It’s a shame Sichenje hasn’t really had a pre-season, I’d be more confident with him at right back if we are missing Ramsay. That recovery pace is a big miss

Club accepted a bid from PNE, TC didn’t want to go. Bid believed to be  around £2.7m

If true, and no reason to doubt you, then I think 2.7m is about where his valuation is at going into the last year of his contract and him seemingly unwilling to sign a new one. I can see why he’d turn down Preston, at most a sideways move, but if a team higher up came calling, Norwich for instance, then he’ll be off.

Is that just because of his injuries? Potentially a concern that he can’t cope with the intensity and schedule here. But based on watching him play I think he was chucked in at the deep end and looked very much like he could cope with it
Very raw but he has the advantages of pace and aggression.  If do persist with 433, I think right back is his best way into the side .

Yep . Purely based on injuries not his talent . He’s already had two spells out injured . Coming into The Championship is a big ask for someone coming from football abroad . I just wonder if his body can cope ?

I think that’s fair enough but also if I remember right he was overplayed a bit because Lloyd Jones and Burke both got injuries so he ended up doing a Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday week that he wasn’t ready for

I think with our foreign signings we are in a good position with squad depth where we don’t need them to play 40+ games so we can hopefully manage them better so that they stay fit across the whole season

Just as we aren’t the same organisation as then, Chelsea aren’t either. Other than for sales I can’t remember them recalling loanees to change clubs recently
Well they didn't recall Ian Maatsen from us next season either despite him getting off to a very good start and with the finances  of Charlton still shaky and the relationship between Bow and TS looking rocky by the time the Jan window came around.

I'll repeat (ad nauseam) the alleged role of Gallagher's specific agent within the large agency group he was signed with, and that agent's dialogues with an unnamed senior-ish commercial manager at Chelsea. It is also not irrelevant to point out that the agent, a relatively young man , tragically took his own life a year later.

It's definitely a business as @Weegie Addick says - it is run as a profit centre - but the way it went with Gallagher was very unusual for them.

You are aware we've had him longer than NJ? And was already looking the best CB in the club. Unless I'm missing something about Hector...
If you remember when he first came in, he had a dreadful game (I forget against who) made a couple of howlers and had to be taken out of the team for a while as his confidence was shot.

At the time it was impossible to see the potential he had and the player he's become.

This is partly why I'm reluctant to write off Apter. Confidence is a massive part of a player's overall skillset, and when he went to Bolton and didn't make an impact his confidence was totally shot.

Jones had the same with us to start with, and went on to be comfortably our best player.
I remember him getting pelters from our fans at Stevenage away. He was too slow to a cross which their striker met and scored, just looked back at it and it's a bit harsh, he was the scapegoat for that period. The problems that day was Appleton was our manager and loan debut Abankwah had a proper mare.

    £4m?
  • Barnsley winger just left for 5 mill ….. ridiculous price
  • Interesting to read the comments that Okonkwo isn't what we need. He sounds like the perfect NJ project to me - already an improvement on what we have, aerially dominant, young for a keeper so plenty of room for improvement and from a good background, coming from Arsenal's academy.

Have you read anything about him? One of the main concerns of Wrexham fans is his lack of aerial dominance and concentration under pressure. I’m highly sceptical on improvement on what we have,  I’d equate him to  About the same as ours (upper L1 is his level ) and more to the point the rumour is he’s asked for more money do you really think we’d offer more money than Wrexham wages wise.

His ability on the ball is definitely exposed more in a two. We saw that at Cheltenham in the first 20 minutes, without that extra defender as a get out he looked a little bit awkward with the ball at his feet.

I remember a number of times when NJ talked about Lloyd, he would often say something along the lines of "He's good for how we play" which I took as he's good for the back 3 and winning those duels but that could change going to a 2. We will see...

Abankwah showed plenty of skill that day but was completely bullied by Stevenage's brutes, Italian football hadn't prepared him for the agricultural depths of L1.

Lloyd will and has absolutely earned his right to start in a 2,3,4,5,6,7 at the back, however we set up, but I think as others have said this change to a 4 does not play to his strengths as much as we did in a back 5 and I can't help but think we brought in Sichenje for a reason and not to be backup, and Koumeito and Collins on paper compliment eachother very well also

You are missing something. He really wasn’t great when he came in
He came out the team after dropping a clanger that led to an equaliser away at Blackpool whilst Curtis was in charge and just before NJ joined. He barely looked half the player he now is under his management.
It was worse than that even. He came out after turning in an all timer disasterpiece against Northampton in the 3-2 loss at The Valley that finally did for Appleton. Curtis took him out for the Blackpool game after that but had to bring him on at halftime when Gillesphey got injured, where he immediately gifted them a goal. He was completely untethered at that point and there were more than a few on here who thought Nathan Jones saying he was out of the team to recover from an injury was a cover-up for just not wanting him
  • Lloyd will and has absolutely earned his right to start in a 2,3,4,5,6,7 at the back, however we set up, but I think as others have said this change to a 4 does not play to his strengths as much as we did in a back 5 and I can't help but think we brought in Sichenje for a reason and not to be backup, and Koumeito and Collins on paper compliment eachother very well also

Sichenje looks like he can play in a 2 but I also think his attributes are much better in a 3. One of his main strengths is how aggressive he is stepping out to win the ball, you can do that a lot more in a 3 than you can a 2

I do wonder if when we signed Sichenje the back 3 was still our long term plan, but since then after how things went at the end of last season, Jones has decided we needed to change
  • I think Collins will do well this year. Staying on the field injured didn't do him any favours.
