When we recruit players Jones gives them a presentation on how he wants them to play and where he feels they fit into the system.
So it’s not like Apter wouldn’t have known before he signed.10 -

What is Nicky Bailey doing these days ?
He couldn't get in the Sheffield Wednesday, nor the Blackburn team last year. We need to be aiming MUCH higherDONVANVLIET said:Re: Nathan Redmond. I appreciate the Dartford match was about getting minutes into legs and that many players are still ring rusty and not up to speed, but from what I saw on Friday evening Redmond is a cut above in terms of quality and, dare I say it, fitness (at least at the moment). Again, based on what I saw on Friday I would not be disappointed if he is signed by NJ.3 -

Remember when we all groaned when we signed Coady, including me, as he couldn’t get in the Wrexham team and his ‘legs had gone’. NJ had other ideas and it turned out season around. Perhaps Redmond is all we can afford for the job NJ wants him for. Remember, we only have a slight improvement on our 3rd worst player budget of last year.DDOUBLEE said:

I’m sure it’ll happen at some point but A Mitchell in Slovenia suggests a move probably isn’t imminent1

Billy koumetio left Dundee’s camp to sign for us.fenaddick said:I’m sure it’ll happen at some point but A Mitchell in Slovenia suggests a move probably isn’t imminentI think it’s like any job, pretty much business as normal until it happens then you go do the medical and sign9 -
I heard about A. Mitchell that at least two Clubs are after him. Don’t know if any have made an offer though.4

i think we all saw there is a good player in apter. our best player over the first month or so. then a few defensive lapses and he didnt get back in as bree arrived and kept him out, that also coincided with edwards injury and a suspension for ramsey whos ability to switch to a right back gave apter freedom. lets see how things progress. our best attaking play came when we had him and campbell threatening wide, kelman looking to run in behind and carey at 10.

But Coady was slow(er). That’s not much of a problem for a holding midfielder, and what Coady brought was leadership, organisation and an understanding of where he needed to be to make crucial interventions. He was brilliant and I’d love him back.SouthLincsAddick said:DDOUBLEE said:

But using the Coady signing as a justification for signing a winger in his 30’s who hasn’t played much football for a couple of years, including for teams that finished below us in the table, is madness.4 -
I guess that's indicative of how you can only do so much with scouting and the rest is up to the player. Apter worked through 3 different academies as a kid including one up in Scotland and then had a few National League loans before being sent to play in L2 aged 20 where he did brilliantly. He then stepped up a division a year later and did well again. Everything we would have seen would be a player who has been happy to move around and scrap at whatever level to get ahead. All the talk of him at the lower levels was of him working hard, taking the knocks at these horrible lower level teams and fighting for everything, there's lots of comments about him putting himself about despite his stature. I don't know what it was; too big a step up to go from L2 to L1 to Championship without a pause, a big move further from home than he's used to, the sudden feeling of his upward trajectory slowing and not knowing how to deal with it, a bit of arrogance and feeling like he doesn't need to listen, maybe he can't cope with the intensity of coaching required under Jones. Whatever it is his confidence has taken enough of a hit that he barely looked like a footballer at Bolton in L1 7 months after briefly looking like the best player in our Championship team. I got the sense by the Saints game that he didn't fancy being told what to do so much, I'm hopeful that he'll get over that but if he can't then I suspect he's a player who isn't going to recover well from setbacks in his careerShootersHillGuru said:
Comes right back to my point above. When we scouted him at Blackpool what was he doing then that convinced us to part with money that he’s either not able or not willing to do now ? I’d assume we had him watched over a reasonable period so must have had a good perspective of what he offered and could do. I know that we had a restrictive budget and looked to sign “top end” league one players with the hope they can step up but this guy was loaned out back to league one and bombed out big time.Garrymanilow said:
I think it's less that he can't tackle and more that he chooses not to, which is a serious problem. I actually do remember him putting in some decent tackles at the start of the season when he could be bothered, but after that he was mostly out of position when moves broke down or started letting players dribble past him because he didn't fancy it like in his disasterclass against Southampton. Which is what I'm saying; if he's willing to put the effort in he's shown the ability to do the role, it's just we need more than 3 games of it out of himSouthbank said:

I agree there seem to be some spurious comparisons. I happen to believe we have done the right thing with Redmond. Get him in for a few weeks and take a close look at him. Redmond of a few years ago was an excellent player. As for Apter he has some natural ability that should be encouraged.se9addick said:

I don’t think he reacted well to being left out of the team. Even though the team was much better with Bree in itGarrymanilow said:

I think there is a role for him next season if he wants it. The Fevrier role where when we need to change system to wingers he is subbed on. And there may be the odd start as an attacking wing back. I just don’t think Apter has the attitude that Fevrier has where he will be happy to be part of the squad and wait for these limited chances to prove himself. Seems like a player that needs to be first choice or he’s not happy, and he’s not good enough to be first choice. I still think he plays pre-season to prove he’s fit and playing ok, and then we find him another loan1 -
Also a problem. Why make it twice?Bostonaddick said:

I can’t help but think that the purpose of a transfer “rumours and discussion” thread is precisely to discuss things that might never happen.Themightyath2 said:Let’s all moan about Redmond if/when he signs, right now the bloke is just having a trial, so stop wasting time and energy on something that might never happen!4 -

think Redmond would be an excellent signing especially helping the younger wingers around him .. but his last club he was on £34k a week4 -

Good Lord, surely Redmond wasn’t on £34k in his last contract?2

He's not the only one, who in their right mind ever thought that Ahadme & Tanto were the answer to our problems up front ? Defensively we seem to have done quite well with players like Ramsay, Edwards, Bell. I know nothing about our latest signings so hopefully they'll be up to scratch but would have liked to have seen players with experience of the championship. I guess the budget plays a large part of this so fingers crossed we've come up with a couple of gems.ShootersHillGuru said:I still can’t stop coming back to the scouting of Apter. Yes there’s a talented footballer in there but what were we thinking in signing a player that really doesn’t fit with Jones very strict set of player requirements and the way we set up. I know Jones has a reputation of changing what position players play but Apter seems to me to lack the fundamentals of what’s required by NJ. He’s not super athletic, not a grafter and die for the cause character either. Seems from the comments made by Bolton fans that he doesn’t look like he gives a flying either. Unless there has been a damascene moment over the summer for Rob and he comes back realising it’s make or break for him I really can’t see where he fits in.0 -
