It’s much more difficult to sign good attackers than it is to sign good defenders, especially if you have one of the lower budgets in a league.charltonbob said:
He's not the only one, who in their right mind ever thought that Ahadme & Tanto were the answer to our problems up front ? Defensively we seem to have done quite well with players like Ramsay, Edwards, Bell. I know nothing about our latest signings so hopefully they'll be up to scratch but would have liked to have seen players with experience of the championship. I guess the budget plays a large part of this so fingers crossed we've come up with a couple of gems.ShootersHillGuru said:I still can’t stop coming back to the scouting of Apter. Yes there’s a talented footballer in there but what were we thinking in signing a player that really doesn’t fit with Jones very strict set of player requirements and the way we set up. I know Jones has a reputation of changing what position players play but Apter seems to me to lack the fundamentals of what’s required by NJ. He’s not super athletic, not a grafter and die for the cause character either. Seems from the comments made by Bolton fans that he doesn’t look like he gives a flying either. Unless there has been a damascene moment over the summer for Rob and he comes back realising it’s make or break for him I really can’t see where he fits in.6 -
Using the signing of ANY player to justify the signing of another is madness.Garrymanilow said:
I guess that's indicative of how you can only do so much with scouting and the rest is up to the player. Apter worked through 3 different academies as a kid including one up in Scotland and then had a few National League loans before being sent to play in L2 aged 20 where he did brilliantly. He then stepped up a division a year later and did well again. Everything we would have seen would be a player who has been happy to move around and scrap at whatever level to get ahead. All the talk of him at the lower levels was of him working hard, taking the knocks at these horrible lower level teams and fighting for everything, there's lots of comments about him putting himself about despite his stature. I don't know what it was; too big a step up to go from L2 to L1 to Championship without a pause, a big move further from home than he's used to, the sudden feeling of his upward trajectory slowing and not knowing how to deal with it, a bit of arrogance and feeling like he doesn't need to listen, maybe he can't cope with the intensity of coaching required under Jones. Whatever it is his confidence has taken enough of a hit that he barely looked like a footballer at Bolton in L1 7 months after briefly looking like the best player in our Championship team. I got the sense by the Saints game that he didn't fancy being told what to do so much, I'm hopeful that he'll get over that but if he can't then I suspect he's a player who isn't going to recover well from setbacks in his careerShootersHillGuru said:
Comes right back to my point above. When we scouted him at Blackpool what was he doing then that convinced us to part with money that he’s either not able or not willing to do now ? I’d assume we had him watched over a reasonable period so must have had a good perspective of what he offered and could do. I know that we had a restrictive budget and looked to sign “top end” league one players with the hope they can step up but this guy was loaned out back to league one and bombed out big time.Garrymanilow said:
I think it's less that he can't tackle and more that he chooses not to, which is a serious problem. I actually do remember him putting in some decent tackles at the start of the season when he could be bothered, but after that he was mostly out of position when moves broke down or started letting players dribble past him because he didn't fancy it like in his disasterclass against Southampton. Which is what I'm saying; if he's willing to put the effort in he's shown the ability to do the role, it's just we need more than 3 games of it out of himSouthbank said:
He can't tackle, bit of a problem for a wingback.Garrymanilow said:
Apart from when he was very good against Watford, Bristol City and Leicester as a RWB and was our player of the month for August. He's perfectly capable of carrying out the role, his output dipped when he stopped putting in the effort to track back and that cost him his place after QPR where he decided he only wanted to go forward and then against Millwall where he didn't have much defending to do and wasted his opportunity when he had the scope to attack. The things Rob Apter can do are entirely up to Rob Apter, it's just a question of whether or not he's come back willing to do what Jones wants him to. I think he can, he just has to switch his brain onSouthbank said:
Maybe, but only as a winger in a 433MrBurns said:
I believe he will come good and was disappointed when he was loaned out in January. He needs a run in the team to get his confidence back. His performances in August and against Boro at home last season showed he can play in this leagueeastterrace6168 said:Got a feeling Nathan hasn't given up on Apter as much as some have on this thread...
Redmond has to show his own worth to Charlton just like any other player.
I'm sceptical for all the reasons stated previously (age, lack of recent games) but he's on trial so we can evaluate him.
He WAS a very good player, whether he still has something to offer, we shall see.

I get the thinking at least with Tanto but we never managed to sort out the raw edges in his game. Got all the physical attributes to be the type of striker that NJ likes but he just seems so technically lacking that it's never going to work out.
Would expect a season long loan somewhere in League 1 for him ultimately, might be late in the window with Godden not being fit to start the season so Tanto might get some first team mins against Cheltenham.2 -
Not embroiled in this no! Just know that he came back down to see her recently.fenaddick said:

Why are we still talking about Apter?Surely we’ve exhausted this conversation both last season and this upcoming one.Is it because there’s nothing else to report and people feel a need to post something, even if it’s the same as the previous 100 posts?7

Maybe it was the old Iain Dowie Advancing the Addicks PowerPoint.FishCostaFortune said:When we recruit players Jones gives them a presentation on how he wants them to play and where he feels they fit into the system.
So it’s not like Apter wouldn’t have known before he signed.1 -
I thought signing Coady was madness, but despite watching football all my life, I know nothing about football compared to pro managers and recruitment experts who are in the top divisions and unless you’re a league manager/player recruitment expect who likes to slum it with the fans, I would politely say these guys know what they’re doing, a lot more than we do. If Redmond is as bad as you say he is and this is all we can afford, then so be it, however much we protest on a fans forum it’s not going to change the budget.se9addick said:
But Coady was slow(er). That’s not much of a problem for a holding midfielder, and what Coady brought was leadership, organisation and an understanding of where he needed to be to make crucial interventions. He was brilliant and I’d love him back.SouthLincsAddick said:DDOUBLEE said:

I appreciate the Dartford match was about getting minutes into legs and that many players are still ring rusty and not up to speed, but from what I saw on Friday evening Redmond is a cut above in terms of quality and, dare I say it, fitness (at least at the moment). Again, based on what I saw on Friday I would not be disappointed if he is signed by NJ.
Remember when we all groaned when we signed Coady, including me, as he couldn’t get in the Wrexham team and his ‘legs had gone’. NJ had other ideas and it turned out season around. Perhaps Redmond is all we can afford for the job NJ wants him for. Remember, we only have a slight improvement on our 3rd worst player budget of last year.DDOUBLEE said:

But using the Coady signing as a justification for signing a winger in his 30’s who hasn’t played much football for a couple of years, including for teams that finished below us in the table, is madness.6 -

He is currently playing for us, why wouldn’t we talk about him? Last season is gone, it’s only normal to be discussing where he (and other players) fit in our squad, style of play etc. for the new season.sillav nitram said:Why are we still talking about Apter?Surely we’ve exhausted this conversation both last season and this upcoming one.Is it because there’s nothing else to report and people feel a need to post something, even if it’s the same as the previous 100 posts?5 -

You’re 100% right, this forum often seems to get bogged down in repetitive conversations around the same player or point - and usually after a couple of pages no one really adds anything different to the settled discourse.sillav nitram said:Why are we still talking about Apter?Surely we’ve exhausted this conversation both last season and this upcoming one.Is it because there’s nothing else to report and people feel a need to post something, even if it’s the same as the previous 100 posts?
In this case we really should move into something else.
Whats your thoughts on Lyle Taylor?12 -
Not fit to lace Danny Green's or Scott Wagstaff's boots. I do sometimes wonder, though, what degree of equivalence there is between Lyle Taylor's actions in that COVID season and Chris Solly's? Maybe it's time to put all that in the past and forgive and forget - maybe we should forgive Scott Parker, too?FishCostaFortune said:

It seems some are overlooking the word TRIAL, if he does well and proves to have something about him, he will be offered a contract based on that, if not he’s jogged on. If he is signed up he has my full support and look forward to seeing how he does, at which point we can decide if we think he’s alright or not.8

I don't think thats the way it works. If we are still in the championship in 2-3 years it doesn't mean we've built up the financial might to spend 10m on a player, it will mean we've lost probably 30 more million, so technically in a financially weaker position I'd imagine.sam3110 said:I think the championship comment is misleading anyway, if there's a decent championship player available on a free (Sykes, for instance, or Bell last season) then they might be looked at. The premise behind his words is you won't catch us dropping 10m on a player from another championship side, something that's getting more frequent now, and will probably be the norm soon.
Maybe in 2 or 3 years if we're established in this league, we'll be the ones spending that dough
Being in the financial position to drop 10m on a player in the Champ is all about wealth/ambition of the owners and nothing to do with longevity of being in the league.1 -
It’s actually more about income. Our owners are very rich but if they wanted to drop £10m on one player alongside our usual budget and running costs, we’d probably end up breaking the financial rulesbalham red said:

Being in the league longer gives us more time to increase our revenue and be able to spend more. Probably won’t ever hit £10m on 1 player levels unless we end up with some huge sales3 -

Most people at Dartford were impressed by Mwamba and other youngsters. Are any ready to make the step up or is it too soon? I reckon a couple will be in or around the first team squad.1

Would imagine Fullah, Mwamba and Gough get some early game time in the cups then potentially 1 or 2 go out on loan. All 3 look like they could have a proper future with us which is great news.Starinnaddick said:Most people at Dartford were impressed by Mwamba and other youngsters. Hope so, have to remember our academy is good. Mwamba impressed in league cup last year (for his limited mins). Gough looked solid in his championship appearances. Fullah came on a few times as well.Starinnaddick said:Most people at Dartford were impressed by Mwamba and other youngsters. Are any ready to make the step up or is it too soon? Too early to tell formation and transfer activity will give us a better idea, at present Gough Asiimwe Mwamba Fullah and Mbick can’t be ruled out doubt there’s anyone else on top of those lot thoughStarinnaddick said:Most people at Dartford were impressed by Mwamba and other youngsters.
