So it is Grant then. I hope he has a very thick skin or is deaf. As to many Charlton fans do not forget and forgive. If he does not score in his first start they will be on him like a pack of wild dogs.
I will hope it works out well for us and him. Give him time to fit in the Jones way of play.3 -

A well established Championship player on a free who knows the club and will settle in very quickly. What’s not to like?Finally a like for like rotation piece with TC or he can opposite to him as well stretching teams more like we did with TC and Small. Two things we massively lacked last season.32

Good addition I’d say. Right age and has the level of Championship experience we desperately need. I’d think he’d have had other options and we must surely have matched the offer WBA made him, which is encouraging. Not the big target man Jones seems to favour so I wonder if we are still chasing Dykes or another up front. With Charlie out for possibly two months it’s a really important signing. Expect to see Kanu sold or loaned and I wonder if the big man role is finally going to be Miles.2

Carey and Knibbs I see as the goal scoring midfielders, but unless we get a pacey/attacking RWB, TC is still the only player we have that can take on players and run at them, plus Redmond. We need stronger in this position imo7 -
He’s not got the physique he had last time he played for us. He’s filled out and matured into a different player. I doubt pace is his only strength these days. However if signing KG on a free means there's more budget to solve the midfield issues then I'm okay with it.5 -
i'm quite pleased with the signing and yes, i agree he plays a different way now - he was somebody who played on the shoulder when he left us and that was when he was most highly sought after - his stock has dropped since then, he's adapted his game, become more of an all rounder and he's no longer lightning quick - if he was i doubt we would have been able to sign him unless the budget rumours are bolloxShootersHillGuru said:

From what NJ said in his interview re this signing and potentially others I think Mwamba might feature more than we think this season. If he can stay fit, Karlan should prove a good signing. He’s got pedigree and is an upgrade on what we presently have. Every signing is a gamble but, given the ‘going rate’ for Championship strikers, to pick him up on a free is a result and should enable funds to be directed to strengthening the critical midfield area.We’ve got a lot of front players on the books but, with the exception of Matty Godden, most of them are young and have limited (and, in some cases, no) experience at Championship level - Leaburn, Campbell, Kelman, Kanu and Mbick.0

However remain cautious because consistency is one of the challenges for young players coming through, especially in the new environment of the men’s first team.
I hope for a ratio something like three steps forward for every one step back.3 -

We need a mobile shield for the backline who can stop us getting run through while helping us progress the ball and then we need a box to box midfielder to upgrade on Docherty. couldn't disagree more other than we need ball retention - we need ball retention but in a way that attacking , ball playing midfielders provide - our current ball retention is to win it and give it back to our defence - we need players who can move forward with the ball, take players on, play one two's etc, not think their job is done once the ball is safely laid back to Lloyd Jones.Garrymanilow said:

I think people would do well to remember how he was treated when he came into the first team, yes he was blooded to early so Roland could fatten him up for sale but he, Morgan Fox and Nick Pope couldn't wait to get away.ShootersHillGuru said:Good addition I’d say. We definitely need a midfielder who dictates the attacking play. The defensive aspects of the squad now look quite strong and the addition of Grant and who knows, possibly another front player should mean we offer more threat but unless we can link that defence to the attack with creativity it’ll make little difference and we’ll be a copy of last season. It’s 100% essential we sign a creative midfielder.2

I think we both want the same thing but you’re misunderstanding what kind of player will provide control and progression. Right now the players we have in the middle struggle to progress the ball and, as you say, end up going backwards a lot. The solution to that isn’t to bypass on upgrading them to sign more attackers, that just means missing out the midfield entirely and if we do that we’d better get Gillesphey back for his diagonals. We need players in front of the defence who can take the ball off the defenders, send it out wide, play it among themselves to give the wingbacks time to move up or wingers to run off their markers, slow the game down or speed it up when needed and stop us getting run through down the middle like we do almost every game. Coventry is tidy on the ball but isn’t good at holding down the middle of the pitch. Coady gave us more structure in the middle but lacked the legs to get around the pitch as much as he needed to. We need a holding midfielder who can take the ball on the half turn and control the pace of a game while also being able to get across the space in front of the defence to support them when the opposition attack. We also need someone in place of Docherty who will help out his defence but can also drive on the ball and play a pass that brings others in to play and creates gaps for others to move into. These aren’t attacking midfielders but they allow the team to be far more attacking by unlocking space and allowing us to have more of the ball by making it hard for teams to run through us. If you look at how the second half team played yesterday. They were combining and progressing up through the pitch with much more urgency and fluidity. That all started from Mwamba, he was brave enough to take the ball from backline and make a penetrative pass into the feet of our forwards or drive the ball forward. We should think about signing a player with those attributes as a starter and allow Mwamba to build up his minutes with the first team throughout the season! I think Mwamba is more than capable to make a good impact this season also…11
