I’ve seen Lankshear who was on loan at Oxford mentioned as an option. Going to Boro in £10+ mill deal. The market really is whack a doodle!7

£750k is peanuts in modern money, he's a squad player, not a step up.NabySarr said:

I was a bit surprised we didn't spend decent money in that area last summer, seeing that Doc and Cov weren't star players for us in L1.MarcusH26 said:
Would expect us to pay more than the Kelman fee for a midfielder.killerandflash said:We'll obviously bring in at least 1 midfielder. Indeed I imagine that's where the biggest transfer spend will be.
We also signed Costello for 750k I think it was. So it’s not like we didn’t invest much in the midfield
Knibbs was a luxury signing, as we had Carey plus Berry and other attacking midfield options like Fullah. His fee combined with the Rankin-Costello money could have bought someone much better in the engine room.

This is why the midfield hasn't seen much transfer activity yet - I have no doubt Jones knows as well as anyone how much improving is needed, he will be as eager as any of us if not moreso to get it done but when Lankshear is going for a 7 figure fee the market is just completely insane.mart77 said:I’ve seen Lankshear who was on loan at Oxford mentioned as an option. Hes good yes, but 10 million pounds good? I just don't see it.11 -
I think this shows our roadmap has to be taking some gambles on young players and hoping a couple really break out. Get into a cycle of selling your best player every couple of seasons for these kind of fees and then using the expanded budget to gamble on youngsters with even higher ceilings. Basically the Coventry model.thenewbie said:

Hopefully every other club goes bust and we’re sitting pretty dominating football because of our sustainable approach…18

This^. £750k is nothing in the modern championship, it's a fringe player at best. Knibbs was a bit confusing , was he actually the No1 target for that role that initially we didn't think would be available so we signed Carey anyway then we find out Knibbs is available so end up with both.killerandflash said:

The way the market is going for domestic signings I'd be surprised if we made another one for a fee , just don't think NJ and PC think the value is out there for our budget. Any additional domestic signings will probably be a freebie or a loan and we'll be hunting around the rest of the world for those 2 midfielders.

based on the fact he was on loan at Oxford last season and did okay, I thought he might be an option for us . But as you say, 10m is crazy. The Premier league clubs really do well when it comes to players they sell through their academies. Regardless of talent it’s like there’s already a premium the buying clubs then have to pay regardless.mart77 said:I’ve seen Lankshear who was on loan at Oxford mentioned as an option. The other thing that annoys me is that these young players get hoovered up by bigger clubs, just because they can, literally just trawl fishing, and then when they’re done, they’re either like Lankshear and cost crazy money, or, they were never actually good enough to play at that level anyway, and get to 23/24 having played a handful of games, when they could’ve built something at a club more appropriate5 -
The days when Arsenal gave us Jerome Thomas for 100k are sadly long overcabbles said:

Lankshear was always going to have interest from bigger wallets than ours. Only 21 and scored double figures for a very poor Oxford side1

Anderson to Blackpool confirmed … by Blackpool1

Woops. But even so that makes it even more nuts if anything!IdleHans said:

Confirmed just now, good luck Karoy0

Coady on a season long loan is fine, we went out and brought him in back in Jan for a reason - and improved us where he was needed - as a pure DM backup to Coventry for those proper tough games its a decent bit of business, plus, with no real update on Colins and Burke 3 minutes away from an injury it wouldnt really hurt to have an extra CB.
If theres minimal costs involved with Coady that allows for more to be spent on a proper quality CM then yay.5 -
With the possible exception of T Campbell, there is no clear sign yet that we can bring through young players at this stage in the Champ. It looks more likely that we have to rely on Coadys and Grants, experienced Champ players with some life left in them.Addickhead86 said:

Our Academy has been great in League One, but I am not sure it is going to produce Champ level players any time soon.

I don't think 10 million is much in the Champ. It does show how far we are from being an established Champ club that it seems outrageousthenewbie said:

Gough, Fullah and Mwamba might prove you wrong in the next few years. Plus the U18s last season were a very good team so likely we have more comingSouthbank said:

Producing academy players for the first team needs to be a priority. It’s one of our few advantages over other championship clubs9 -
You could have said pretty much the same about John Barnes. That argument doesn't convince me.Richard J said:I think Redmond might be worth bringing in
Remember , at his best he was capped by England and commanded a £10 million transfer fee , so he would been good enough.
Just maybe having a full preseason might get him back to a level where he could make a decent contribution for us.2 -
The Lankshear deal is the latest in a long list that show us how the fees we paid last year pale in comparison to the money spent across the league.
I'm sure it won't stop the usual crowd from moaning about the mega fees we spent on Apter, Tanto et al at the next possible opportunity, but at some point people need to put things in perspective. I know it's annoying our biggest deals haven't worked out. I know it's a lot of money for us. But all deals are gambles and some of the biggest clubs in the country spend £60m plus and get it wrong. We are a small fish in a big pond, currently.

I think that in a couple of seasons of regular football he’ll cut it at Championship level. The weaknesses in his game which for me are all about decision making and passing will improve and there’s no doubting his athleticism and attitude. Very sadly we are at a transitional stage in our Championship status where we can’t afford to have Karoy make those improvements in his game in our first team. He needs to be playing. I am sorry to see him depart but will watch his progress with great interest and wish him nothing but success.golfaddick said:
Seems like a nice lad but unfortunately not good enough for the Championship.2121 said:Ah man! Love karoy. Good luck. I think he will develop into a great player.7 -

Lankshear may go on to do the business, but I think 10m for potential is crazy money. It doesn’t matter because pretty much every EFL club are living beyond their means, but I just think for even a club like Boro who are fortunately funded by Gibson, it’s too much money relative to what they turnoverSouthbank said:

I think just like Karoy it’s best for player and club for him to move on. Needs game time and we can’t give him that. With one year left it’s sensible to get a fee.stjohnshill said:AFC Wimbledon are pushing hard for Kanu8
