I would call it more of a connector. They have got to be able to do the defensive side of the game. They have to be comfortable take the ball of the cent halfs and progressing through the units to forward players.I personally see Doc and Coventry be rotated in no 6s position and two new no 8s coming in. A destroyer and Connector in double pivot.Sword65pf said:

- Jordan Holsgrove
- Juho Kilo
- Anzor Mekvabishvili
- Matias Siltanen
- Timi Elsnik
- Frank Adjei
- Markus Karlsson
- Adrion Pajaziti
- Santiago Castañeda
- Seo Jae-Min
- Panagiotis Andreou
You can probably pick holes in each of them for one reason or another. Not gone too deep with the research but thought it would be fun to throw half a dozen names out.4 -
Yes we do, I like Coventry but find him frustrating now because he just isn’t kicking on in the aspects he needs to, looking forward and the odd shot, he seems to be in the correct position of the pitch but not capable of the above when there, Doc we know what we get from him, but needs someone you describe next to him.Scoham said:
I think we need an upgrade on Coventry, someone more well rounded - strong defensively but a better and more creative passer, and an upgrade on Docherty who offers the same engine and defensive work, but again a better passer and a more technical and/or physical player.Sword65pf said:

Reckon now we have Alli that TC is sold quite soon. Grant/Alli for left side and some money for a CM. Hope I am wrong.Well, from where I was sitting, he was probably one of our better players. He was our only real outlet, just as he was last season. He desperately needs more support, and I think he'd have had a much better campaign if Edwards had stayed fit.Speaking of needing help... are you alright? Everything OK?8 -
I picked them out because they have good numbers for the usual things you’d expect a defensive player to do but also look to get on the ball and play forward when they do get it.Sword65pf said:

Would love 2 new midfielders but the holding midfielder is the one we really need. We already have an 8 that is better in possession than Docherty, Costello. In games where we have less off the ball (nearly every game) then Docherty is fine, he was one of our best players last season. I’d have had him 4th for POTY behind Jones, Bell and Carey. If there are games or scenarios where we need a better player on the ball in there then we already have Costello. Ideally we upgrade here too and then Costello slips down the pecking order as a versatile backup optionCoventry is where we really need to upgrade. That position is the one that gets on the ball the most (other than CB) and is who we rely on to progress the ball. I think some real quality there could transform our team7

I’m not convinced either, but I just don’t see us needing 2 ball playing midfielders on the pitch at the same time very often at all. We aren’t suddenly going to be controlling games and passing through teams this season, and you need more than just having 2 good midfielders to do that.Sword65pf said:

I wonder if after watching our midfielders put in a stinker against average League 1 opposition they will change their stance on this.PringlesCurtains said:

Really feel that would be a smart pick up. Pretty good on the ball, can pick a pass, plenty of league 1 experience and looks like he could play a level above potentially.
Not saying he would solve all our midfield problems, but think it would be a solid pick up on a free.
League 1 still has very good players and shouldn't be ignored.
Surprised no one has gone near Lewis Wing either, he might be 31, but he consistently plays 40+ games a season, has goals and assists in him and doesn't rely on pace, can easily see him being a consistently good player well into his mid thirties like Oli Norwood.2 -
Agreed, but I would like to see more of TC. As mentioned he would’ve found it hard last season being considered our only consistent outlet that can pick the ball up and run at players, and we were set up not to get beat as opposed to win, and he suffered from not having quality among the team. But, in my opinion, from the point of view of other champ clubs coming in for him if he weren’t to sign, I didn’t see enough to say he’s going to be consistently good at this levelDOUCHER said:
tc, ramsay, jones and bell are our best players - losing any of them is not a positive - keep them and add more quality is positive even if they don't sign new dealscabbles said:I wouldn’t like to see TC leave as I think he’s one of our better players, but there’s no way he’s proven at this level. He needs to kick on and deliver more this year. I appreciate we weren’t the most fluid footballing team last year and the LWB role was very unsettled on Greg whole as soon as Edwards was injured, but I’m not sure he’d be a player of choice for a Soton, Norwich, Boro, Wolves, West Ham etc or anyone else chasing promotion. For both us and him I think he should sign a new deal here. If he doesn’t and he doesn’t offer much more than he did last season, I can’t see him getting a move to a Championship team 12th and up.
Of course, he could be hedging his bets and not confident we’ll stay up, in which case it might be the right move for him, and he is then free to find a club 13-21st in the Champ for season 27/28
still has a lot of time on his side and hopefully will kick on this season with a new deal as well1 -
I think this is where JRC is causing an issue. You can take a punt on Wing/Collins if you have the squad space for them to be a good bench option if they’re not good enough to start. We don’t have that space and need midfielders who can come in and startBraziliance said:

Even when JRC looked like he had a bit about him last season, he still didn’t nail down a regular starting spot, I don’t see how that is going to change, it can’t be just style of play, who he is playing alongside.i don’t believe he wasn’t signed as a starter when he came, it’s just a very odd signing.fenaddick said:

I think JRC has the potential to be top championship player. He's performance at Blackburn under Toney Mowbray was to that level but he was playing rb. The problem I have is I'm not sure where we are going to use him to get the best out of him.NabySarr said:

I don't think Wing or Collins solve the main problem we have in midfield. Norwood would to some degree but we ain't going to move for him but someone like that would suit us better.Braziliance said:

Those of you trying to make a case that our midfield just needs a single change to make it competitive, are barmy.
Coventry, Docherty, Knibbs, JRC and Carey are all mediocre by Champ standards, we saw that last season for God's sake. We could get away with one of them, Carey probably, if we bring the right two reinforcements in. Otherwise it will be grim from the getgo.14 -
