I wonder who the "supplementary" game will be against next Tuesday?

It will be behind closed doors, obviously, but I wonder if it'll be similar to when we played Palace at their training ground a couple of years ago.

I hope they stream it, even if it's a no commentary, single camera effort
The last time we did it was against Southend and we only found out because the Southend manager mentioned it

Is he expecting TC to leave? If we've signed Grant and Alli as wingers, yet want competition for Apter on the right, where does that leave TC?

"When we let Rob go on loan last season, we only had one player that can go one-v-one in TC [Tyreece Campbell]."

"Now we have him, we have Karlan Grant, we have Rob Apter, we have Millenic Alli and we are looking at bringing in another one as well. We are going to have five one-v-one options which is what we need.”

Campbell - Grant - Apter - Alli - One More

If we do slap down good fees on a winger and midfielder now, can we just agree to delete the last 50 pages of this thread and pretend they didn’t happen
Can't be spoiling some fans' misery now. Even after signing Alli some were still complaining about not signing a CM (even though we all know we need one) rather than being happy we'd signed another wide player.
I’m more confused with the Alli signing, if we’re still looking at another winger it means Ali will be what 4th choice at the best behind This new RW Grant and TC.

Don’t get me wrong 1M in today’s market is peanuts but is a strange one
Also strange that he hasn't had any pre-season, he wasn't out of contract.

I would say last year TC taking on and winning a one-v-one was rarer than hen's teeth, same with Apter, so let's see where we go next year...

TC beat his fullback more often than not, he just didn’t do anything with the ball after that.

Hopefully if we're going to this 4-2-3-1 that people are talking about will result in different outcomes.
Apter played a lot as a Right Wing-Back last season, and when he played there TC would play as a second Striker who'd stay wide a lot of the time
Would be easy for sides to double up against TC when he'd be wide, because Apter would be coming from deeper - If though we have Grant / Alli on the other flank, you'd hope that the idea will be to make it harder for teams to commit two Defenders coping with both flanks the whole time.

My least favourite thing is seeing wingers take it past their fullback only to then turn around and try and beat them again, TC sometimes runs afoul of this.

Bottom line for me is that the window so far for us has been positive although in all honesty we know nothing about the foreign lads. Ultimately though the window and even the season could depend on this midfield signing. As we stand at this point we’re stronger but our midfield is relegation candidates

I wonder if the club are playing hardball with Kanu ie sign a new, longer, deal or leave now. If he signs then a loan to L1 is fine.

Or maybe we just want/need the money a sale would generate to fund other deals plus we need to trim the squad size.
Think it's a bit of both. I would hope we don't need the money but we do need the squad space. I am surprised he hasn't moved on already, I'd have thought there would be a few clubs willing to pay for him
If we're asking for around £1m I would have thought the top end of League 1 would be starting a queue. Especially Plymouth who have the money to spend.
I'm sorry, but if we're only asking a million, considering last season, it would be a steal. And, yes, I know he's in the last year of his contract...

I would hope we're asking for more, and playing hardball. After all, we don't need to sell. And it's a seller's market.
There be a big sell on
Ooh arrr how be you know such things Farmer Ronnie?
    Incredible  :D

To echo what others have said, I think Chalobah improves us, it’s whether we keep him fit. Personally, if the budget was there and he would accept a club average wage, I’d sign him.

Saying that, if we are in for Holsgrove is that too many players, with Coventry / JRC, in that DM role?

What does the midfield look like with Doc / Cov / Hols / Chalobah / Mwamba / Knibbs / Carey / JRC..(think that’s all) as the central options?

Still a gap at number 8

I’ve heard they’re playing the Happy Clappers XI first half and the Bedwetters XI second half. Bedwetters have to go last because it can get messy.

    Utter nonsense
Is it!...I have seen TC take on and get past the full back as much as the next man thanks, but constantly try to do it again and run out of ideas, winning a one-v-one means just that, getting past and creating something from that action, I like TC and want him to do well, but he is so frustrating to watch at times...

I would imagine that with the remaining two positions being stated as RW and Dominant CM, 3 at the back is not on the cards this season.  Can’t see how we go with wing backs with Ramsay and McNamara.  Unless Jones thinks the RW can operate as RWB

It’s worth checking his stats on that. Poor TC, played out of position, often the only creative outlet in the side with a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders as well as being marked by two players. People like a simple one person scapegoat to explain more complex problems, shame it has to be one of our better players. I can see why he’s reluctant to sign a new contract.

This is the problem with inverted wingers. They run past their man and they’re on their wrong foot.

The ideal signing would be a right sided player who is as comfortable at RW as RWB to give us the versatility, hence the clamour on here for Stanley Mills. If we go for someone like Kamara then it definitely signals 4-2-3-1 will be the primary option.

The signings have signalled the intent. For the change to work there needs to be a long-term commitment to this even if things start badly. If by October we have reverted to three at the back regularly then we would likely see square pegs in round holes or three to four wingers being left out every week. In-game or opponent-based flexibility is inevitable, but it definitely seems that four at the back is the preferred choice.

He also received loud verbal abuse from our own supporters. He is frequently called 'lazy', a racist trope, when he busts a gut in most games to get up and down the pitch.I am surprised he has not gone already.

I've got a sneaky feeling the midfielder could be Alex Gilbert. I hope it’s not, but feel like this is the area we are operating in. I would be disappointed if he was positioned as the 'marque' midfield signing, but in a way getting him in as a squad player on free to add some depth and give options. I remember at The Valley he was playing a little deeper for Boro and had a decent game, mind you had better players around him.
Might just be me but I have a feeling we’ll be going much bigger than that.
It might be blind optimism but I reckon we could be set for Kamara and Holsgrove.
Perhaps I’m wrong but the post Colchester NJ interview felt a bit different. Like he knows we’re almost there/there with one or two of our bigger targets.
Yes, I don't think he would raise expectations like this, without being fairly confident that we'd land some "bigger" targets, of the sort you might have to wait for, and who would be major parts of the transfer budget.

Phrases like "keep your powder dry" wouldn't make sense if we just sign a couple of mediocre journeymen, free agents or a "Matt Smith type" PL loan. Chalobah could be a good signing, but he's not someone you'd wait until August to sign if he was your main target, seeing that we could have signed him 2 months ago.

I really cant see how a deal for Gilbert would take time and have to be one we would need to be patient with.

    He is a free agent!

Would be a total meltdown if so.

It can only really work with two new midfielders to dominate the middle of the pitch. Otherwise our two man central defence will be exposed all the time. Fingers crossed we are getting them in.

not a chance - NJ's word was dominant - Gilbert had some good attributes but dominant wasn't one of them

I don't want Stan Mills. Will probably get himself sent off around Christmas time so he doesn't have to play on Boxing Day just like his old man.
