5-3-2. Keep it tight and try and nick a goal. I think 4-2-3-1 leaves us too open. One thing I will say is that it is not going to be pretty this season.
Have to agree with you Dennis.1 -
Preston have just had to call off their preseason game against Barca tomorrow because they don’t have enough players available we can very easily finish above them5
-
I’m stunned, stunned, that someone with such a massive downer on the club like Dennis, thinks we’re screwed, I’m shocked16

Well, so far he hasn't and we are now into August. If teams wanted him he would have moved by now.charente addick said:
Is Stan Mills realistic for us though? I would have though he would go to a team expected to be challenging for promotion.NabySarr said:
Alli had played a bit of wingback while at Luton. Not ideal but if it’s lopsided and he can be more attackingsam3110 said:It would have to be one of the most lopsided back 5s in history, with Mesík/Bell/Edwards playing as a fullback, Ramsay as an inverted RB and Apter/whoever we sign as an out and out right midfielder who tracks back more than normal.
It'll even more extreme than we played last season, and then if you played McNamara instead, you'd have to shift it so Bell or Koumetio is the inverted LB and one of Campbell, Alli or Grant are the left midfielder who has to track back a lot, and we'd need a super attacking right winger/striker
Still think Stan Mills is the missing piece here, the rumoured £3m I think is a bit of a steal for him too1 -
Anyone got a rumour?8

That's one way of getting relegated for sure.Southbank said:I think we should sell Ramsay and/or Lloyd Jones if it means we can upgrade in midfield. We have cover for both and the money needed to get a seriously good midfield is probably outside our existing budget.6 -

We have cover for both and the money needed to get a seriously good midfield is probably outside our existing budget.I think that would be a very dangerous route to go down, particularly with Jones.Besides, if we were going to cash in surely we'd have done this earlier in the summer to give us more time to get better players in.I do not think for one moment there is any truth in West Ham being interested in Jones.2

Has anyone been paying attention to what’s going on at Preston?7

Think there was a rumour about a player from abroad that’s done his medical and supposedly signing tomorrow?fenaddick said:Anyone got a rumour?Would also think we will make a call on Chalobah this week, maybe after the BCD game on Tuesday if we want to sign him up before the competitive games start2 -

Yes, Barcelona had to call off a game against them because they could not field a team. With all their money eh?

This reply is hidden behind a paywall.TheSE7 said:
That’s fair enough. Each to their own indeed. I was speaking more on the topic of transfers as that was the subject at hand to begin with, and there are plenty of others out there that will break that sort of news way before Cawley and don’t charge for it.SiFry said:Each to their own, but personally I enjoy Rich Cawley’s Substack and Podcasts with LM. Reckon it’s great value at just few quid a month!Just rubs me up the wrong way when people start charging others for stuff. I understand it’s affordable and isn’t much but it’s just the principle for me.Please send me £5 to view it.6 -
Given the opposition in the pre-season friendlies it feels a little premature to me to classify the additions to date as having improved us considerably. On paper they have appeared to strengthen us on the left hand side of the defence where Edward’s injury and lack of cover left us exposed. However, we clearly have not strengthened the midfield, nor materially upfront in my opinion.AberystwythAddick said:
Considerably is a stretch.AndyG said:
It’s all about opinions mate. I don’t see how you can’t see that Billy, Grant, Collins and Mesic don’t improve us considerably from last seasonBraziliance said:I think some people haven’t paid attention to last season or the Championship in general without sounding rude. QPR and Preston finishing below us? I would be surprised.
Both have better squads, neither lost to us last season (Preston doing the double), Preston haven't been a league 1 side since 2015, QPR 2004, both way more established than us as Championship sides.
Fair enough saying Blackburn as it was touch and go for them, and of course the newly promoted teams, but people can't actually believe we are in a better position than any of the teams that finished above us?
It is very likely we are in a mini relegation battle with Blackburn, Lincoln, Bolton and maybe Cardiff. Actually improve the squad and that may change.
i I think it’s easy to get down about stuff but so far although not ideal I do think we have improved far more than most of the teams around usThe transfer that have so far occurred have shoehorned us into a formation that we’ve not played for 2 plus years on a regular occurrence. It will likely leave some players exposed due to lack of skill.1 -
Hopefully the loss to Reading will give NJ more leverage to persuade the owners to get their wallets out for the players we need before the window closes.11
-
I agree with this but I'm still slightly troubled. I think last season we all agreed that we desperately needed more quality in midfield and going forwards. Instead we have mostly just added depth at the back. Karlan is really the only player who's a step up in quality and one player is not enough.Covered_End_Lad said:So far
mesik looks an upgrade on chambers
billy looks an upgrade at CB
grant an upgrade in attack
if we can bring in an upgrade in central midfield and wide right then I would say we are definitely in a stronger position than last year

No one had Leicester going down last season before a ball was kicked. Same with Luton the season before. This league has a way of surprising you when you think you’ve figured it out.Braziliance said:I think some people haven’t paid attention to last season or the Championship in general without sounding rude. This time last year, the bookies had Leicester as play off places at worst. What was the basis on us finishing above them?AberystwythAddick said:

Lincoln have lost the architect of their 103 points, they might not start strong.I can’t believe people have us relegated before we’ve even kicked a ball. Are we a weak championship team? Of course we are, we have a small budget compared to others! This season is going to be hard but if we get to 54 points, it’s better than last season.6 -

Spot on but there is always a team that unexpectedly falls into the battle, Preston and Watford oils be this years team. I still think Portsmouth will be in the relegation mix but will be near the top of the relegation mini leagueBraziliance said:I think some people haven’t paid attention to last season or the Championship in general without sounding rude. What’s happened to the player from aboard joining tomorrow??2
-
I reckon we get Holsgrove for €3.5m in the end, which is essentially £3m
Hoping it's sorted out sooner rather than later either way3 -
Well we’ll find out tomorrow won’t weRonnieMoore said:What’s happened to the player from aboard joining tomorrow??20 -
Doesn’t really seem that there has been much of a budget this season in comparison to last.
People are just hoping that this is because we’re saving it for a few midfielders.
The longer we go without signing them,
The less likely it is that we’ll get the players we might have originally wanted.
