Doesn’t really seem that there has been much of a budget this season in comparison to last.

People are just hoping that this is because we’re saving it for a few midfielders.

The longer we go without signing them,
The less likely it is that we’ll get the players we might have originally wanted.
The opposite is what Jones has been saying all summer though, that deals with players we want are taking longer as we're having to really get to them and convince them that it's a good move

I don’t get this logic. Just because they’re later signings doesn’t mean they’re 2/3/4th choice. Better players are harder to sign, it takes time

It would have to be one of the most lopsided back 5s in history, with Mesík/Bell/Edwards playing as a fullback, Ramsay as an inverted RB and Apter/whoever we sign as an out and out right midfielder who tracks back more than normal.

It'll even more extreme than we played last season, and then if you played McNamara instead, you'd have to shift it so Bell or Koumetio is the inverted LB and one of Campbell, Alli or Grant are the left midfielder who has to track back a lot, and we'd need a super attacking right winger/striker
Alli had played a bit of wingback while at Luton. Not ideal but if it’s lopsided and he can be more attacking

Still think Stan Mills is the missing piece here, the rumoured £3m I think is a bit of a steal for him too
Is Stan Mills realistic for us though? I would have though he would go to a team expected to be challenging for promotion.
Well, so far he hasn't and we are now into August. If teams wanted him he would have moved by now.
Didn’t you know. Apparently you have to wait until the absolute end of the window. Because apparently that’s when the best players are available!

Or at least that’s what people keep saying

Surely a L1 side will pay £250k for Doc or Coventry to finance a basic of £5k pw for Chalobah. But still need a marquee CM.

But we need the depth as well as the strength.

No point signing 2 midfielders and selling 2, because ultimately the third choice will still be Rankin-Costello who isn't good enough

Got no problem with Cov and Doc as depth because we'll need them. Can't end up like the Gallagher/ESI season with some of the tragic midfields we put out then.

He’s stuck behind a pay wall at Gatwick

Make it sound so simple but not that straightforward, Chalobah is never accepting 5k a week on a 1yr deal first of all.

then there’s the problem that there’s only about arguably about 5/6 L1 teams that could match the wages they’re on + the fees for Cov/Doc there’s thousands of midfielders outside Charlton as wellz

Think we’ll get in a few prem loans as they start to become available later in the month

Be interesting how that would work with the 25 man squad that's has to be put into the EFL at end of the window. Those loans would count in that squad, if i''m correct.

Would need a load more out's for that to happen,

Jordan Holsgrove feeling like this years Andy Delort imo, got a feeling the centre mid will be either Chalobah or someone to come up out of nowhere in terms of prior links

Hopefully the loss to Reading will give NJ more leverage to persuade the owners to get their wallets out for the players we need before the window closes.

Can someone tell me what the budget is please ? Because every one knows apart from me
They already given NJ a good budget up on last year ..
Oh dear, you are now the club accountant.

I do think the squad size rules are delaying transfers across the division, as so many clubs will already be at or over the limit, and wary of adding to the squad without getting players out first

And as loan players, however young, count, it's not as if you bring in a 20 year old "wonderkid" in July as a punt, as he'll be taking a place that you might need later in the window.

I do think that last summer's transfer business has slightly hampered us this summer. Players like Apter, Tanto, JRC and Burke are all taking squad places, and only the former is likely to have much of a role with us this season. Plus we have 3 senior keepers, when it would have been handy to have a talented 20 year old as 3rd choice.

I'm okay with Chalobah come in as stop gap for this season he better than what we have in terms of quality on the ball and position he takes to receive the ball. We still need to bring in another midfielder because he's Durability over season is not good enough to be relied on.

I must confess people are losing their minds on this thread, it’s go as far to say it’s worse than kids at Christmas time, screaming for new toys!

Questions should be answered if we don't show the money to sign what is so evidently needed.

Carter said this to Cawley in May: "We need more up front. We didn’t score enough goals this year and that’s painfully obvious. In the middle of the park we don’t want to rely just on Sonny (Carey)."

So far we have zero new strikers and zero new central midfielders. If the window closes with no real money spent in these key areas, the question is, what's changed?

Maybe Barca, having no game v Preston now, will face Charlton in our supplementry game on Tuesday.

Poor if so as they will offer no real test for our boys.

Yes they do, meaning if we want to sign anyone somebody has to make way

Grant can play up front and Alli is also an attacking player so you could say we have partly addressed what Carter said

Preston have just had to call off their preseason game against Barca tomorrow because they don’t have enough players available we can very easily finish above them
We may finish above them, but we’ll never have a train museum that’s just 97 miles away from us.

Sorry for my ignorance, are the rules new / different this year?

(PS I've rewritten this a couple of times now and it always reads sarky, but it's a genuine question!)

Like the look of big Billy. Not sure why he keeps playing with his shorts though. It looks like he's got Kylies hot pants on after 20 minutes.

I think you better read that back to yourself Red', 'he's better than what we have and not good enough fit wise doesn't make sense.
