Listening to that interview it looks like were lumbered with the squad we’ve got maybe minus TC. Never mind , we’ve got a chance of signing two has been injury prone midfielders once they are fit .

We are a million miles away from having a team to compete this season .
Genuinely don’t know how anyone can come away from that interview and be negative about it. He’s just said we are probably signing Chalobah, another midfielder and a right winger. That is good news ffs
That's how I read it too.

Means nothing until the deals are done, as NJ himself said, but it was quite upbeat.

As long as it’s alongside another midfielder yes

Think it’s Chalobah and a RW in which case we’ve set ourselves up for a downfall

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones on Preston link to Tyreece Campbell and clarifies whether there would still be another midfielder deal on cards if trialist Nathaniel Chalobah was to earn contract

Nathan Jones chatted to South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition today with the Addicks boss completing his press conference ahead of Saturday’s EFL Cup tie at Cheltenham.

Further down in this piece are the answers to a number of our questions - including his reaction to Preston North End showing interest in Tyreece Campbell, the latest on trialists Nathaniel Chalobah and Nathan Redmond plus an injury update regarding Charlie Kelman.

First up came the club’s questions, with Jones saying that the switch this season, so that the first fixture of the new season is the EFL Cup, is “quite a nice way to do it”.

“We will treat it as our first competitive game and prepare accordingly,” he added. “We are taking this as seriously as we possibly can.”

Jones revealed that Rob Apter and Micah Mbick are back in full training. Collins Sichenje played an hour in a midweek fixture. Sonny Carey, who missed the friendly against Reading due to illness, has trained all week.

Forward Charlie Kelman has been missing from the Charlton squads since coming off at Gillingham last month.

And Jones confirmed to this website that the former QPR man is likely to be absent for the opening weeks of the Championship campaign.

“He has had a shoulder problem, so he will be weeks, in terms of that,” said the Welshman. “That might stretch over into six weeks, or whatever it is.

“It is an injury that he required a bit of treatment on. It is one we just have to be patient with. Because it is his shoulder it is an injury he will be able to train on, it’s about when he is ready for contact and it has healed properly, then we’ll be able to put him back in.

“He will be able to do non-contact training with us. The frustrating thing is that I wanted him to have a really good pre-season with us this year.”

Think that's NJ basically confirming Kamara to Pompey as opposed to him knowing his target.

I don't think it was super encouraging given Jones is essentially saying Chalobah is the quality we've been after all summer which just feels like spin, it also is an understandable cryptic interview, so who knows but it sounds like we're struggling to convince TC to extend. Chalobah is a good signing but you have to wonder how much he'll be able to contribute given his well documented injury issues, I took Nathan's words after that as we'd potentially explore another centre mid on top of that, let's see what happens by the end of the weekend. I'm expecting us to announce Chalobah on a 1/2 year deal, if I had to guess

He made 13 appearances last season . Some from the bench for a team who was the worst in championship history. He’s was either injured ( we’ve got too many of those players thank you ) or he couldn’t get in that side 😬.
It’s worrying that we are dipping into that market .

Maybe I've just had a long day at work given a few others seem more optimistic

NJ say he knows the right winger very very well which suggests either it's his wife or a player he's worked with before.

So maybe the Soton winger mentioned above?

Jones hiding his disgust at being stabbed in the back by the owners very well, quite upbeat, I thought.
Was he not talking about Kamara still here?

Is that not continuing on from his talk about Kamara

So does that mean if Chalobah did get a deal that would mean that position is full?

    “No,” said Jones

Literally a quote from the interview. I swear some people just try their absolute best to see the negative in anything we do

Nah mate just an opinion - cheer up

If it’s Chalobah , a centre mid and a right winger then happy days . If that all can happen soon even better . Then we’ve got a couple weeks to get some players out and top up the squad with a couple loan players.
at this stage of the season we normally need a lot more than two players though and I’d imagine most other teams do too.

Happy we're signing Chalobah plus another CM because that potentially pushes Cov & Doch further down the pecking order. The less we see of that pairing this season, the better.

Id be happy enough with a decent CM, Chalobah and a good RW

Chalobah’s injury problems are a worry but he really impressed me in the game at the end of the season against Wednesday and against Colchester for us, he’s a good size and very experienced just hope he can stay fit.

My best interpretation of that interview would be, Chalobah signs this week as well as a new RW close behind making the RW position all set.

Gives us another body in the door officially at CM while we take our time to get our #1 target at CM. Annoyingly I always thought the new CM would take the longest to sort so having NC in would be an ok stopgap until we get the main man in

I really hope that all turns out to be true

NJ clearly indicated that we would have two new midfielders and we would have to wait for the winger a little longer … yet there are certain people who are completely turning that statement into a negative ….

Chalobah, one other in midfield and a right winger would be quite a tidy window. As long as those other signings are a step above what we have. Wouldn’t be surprised to see doc or cov or both moved on with another cm brought in.

Only issue is who do we get rid of to facilitate 3 signings. Kanu, Asiimwe, Olaofe, one of the midfielders and then we’d need one more out.
Sadly probably means bad news on the TC front. I wonder if the plan is that if TC does sign a new deal we get rid of Apter, if he doesn’t then TC is sold and Apter stays

Would be happy with Chalobah , a quality CM and a Quality RW. Don't even think then you'd see one of the current CMs go purely because of needing the depth.

Of course I'd have loved to have had everything done and dusted for Derby but if it's just the RW that's going to take the time and we can get some mins into Apter this weekend that's not too bad.

If we are planning on picking up Chalobah and two more then we must be very confident about shifting some players. Sounds like Tanto is off which frees up a space but there's no way we're sitting with 5 CMs including one who is constantly injured unless there's some serious progress in the outgoings

My reading of that is the winger NJ knows well is Kamara. 'Let’s see where he ends up' suggests Jones is perhaps confident it's with us.

NC this week then Holsgrove as the 'let's see what happens' signing? In other words, JH has been hanging on to assess all his options but may well sign for us close to the deadline.

Still think we need two central midfielders and Chalobah shouldn't be one of them.

If it was something like Holsgrove and unknown sexy midfielder in, Doc out and Chalobah to fill the back up roll, perfect.

If it is a case of the squad staying the same, but we manage only one new midfielder and Chalobah, I don't think it is enough personally and can see us scrambling for another midfielder in January.

In their defence though, they've only had 299,520 minutes to manage this though. These things take patience.

He’s not replacing Cov and Doc with Chalobah and one other - that would essentially mean we’ve got one and a half players as opposed to two.
