I think a realistic goal would be, try to avoid a relegation battle this year - mid table finish and improve the style of football to be more attacking/score more goals. Think that’s a fair and steady progresssion.0
-
It's all down to the ownership now. We need some quality in midfield , without that we will be in trouble.0
-
1 Avoid sleepwalking to a second successive relegation - I couldn’t take league two!
2 Oh wait, actually, err, I’ll get back to you….0 -
I’m sure Jones knows what he wants to do and probably who he wants to do it. I’d guess we’ll still be comfortably in the bottom eight on budget so squaring that circle will be difficult. It’s going to come down to very good scouting and probably some luck. For me it has to be quality over quantity this time although we’ve heard rumours of 11 or 12 players coming in. Jones has also gone on record as saying he’s going to be ruthless so I think we all expect a very interesting summer. I have a feeling that most of the starters in the last few matches won’t be starting next season.0

Anyone know when the retained and released list usually comes out?0

Last year it was 5 days after the season ended. NJ said he's got meetings with the players Monday & Tuesday so you'd hope Friday at the latestWrightCharlie said:Anyone know when the retained and released list usually comes out?2 -
It’s because people post, then have a rethink about what they have posted, realise for whatever reason it isn’t appropriate, or incorrect, so edit their post to just a . as you can’t delete it entirely.jimmymelrose said:

For example I could delete the above to just a . as others have already explained it before me.4 -
Survival. 5 out of the 6 teams moving into our league are considerably stronger than the 6 teams leaving. But as a board member I'll need to content myself to spending serious money to stand still in terms of league placing

We’ve got a big job on our hands. When you tot up the gaps we need to fill and the upgrades we’re hoping for, it starts to get close to around 8-10 signings. Will be a very interesting summer.Blue sky thinking but if we can have a good start and get to January near to mid-table, I wonder if the board have a look at that new 8th place playoff spot and take a view on bringing some signings forwards.0
-
Not going to be the most exciting one ever, We have only 4 players out of contract, Taylor and Berry are already certain releases its only Dykes and Godden which can go either way. The interesting stuff will be who we try and sell this summerWrightCharlie said:Anyone know when the retained and released list usually comes out?

But we aren’t like any of those clubs nor are we going to be with this ownership and management. It’s not having unrealistic expectations, my point was with now 8th being a play off place next season, I am sure that Jones is aiming for that. It’s why he was so desperate for us to finish higher and why he’s said numerous times about how he sees us more around the 60 point mark this season and even recently how he thinks if we’d had Godden fit we’d have that many points.Crispywood said:
Cause with unrealistic expectations youre going to either be incredibly disappointed or make irrational and silly decision for having this dillusion that youre better than you actually are and pay the price for it like we’ve seen with Plymouth when they appointed Rooney and Birmingham where they sacked Eustace a top 3 championship manager who had them 6th and got relegatedSage said:Think the board’s expectations would be to finish anywhere above 14th. What Jones will be doing is pushing to finish in the top 8 and to do that you need to finish on practically 69 points.
That’s 16 more than we finished on this season. With the right level of player signed, I genuinely think we can make up an additional 16 points throughout the season.
Why not push the boundaries and aim for that top 8?
You’ll have teams every season in this league under performing like Sheffield United, Leicester, West Brom, Norwich etc. you’ll also have teams over performing too like Millwall and Hull for example.
Football isn’t so predictable and we have a whole summer ahead of us where anything could happen. We don’t know what’s going to happen at our club with recruitment yet let alone anyone else.
Last season Hull got 49 points and stayed up on goal difference. Derby got 50 points. This season Hull finished on 73 points and Derby on 69, finishing 6th and 8th. The point is, with good quality recruitment and a bit of luck as well as out performing our budget, there is a chance we could be in the pack chasing that 8th spot.
That is not unrealistic or delusional, it’s football and it’s the Championship.15 -
And that last sentence Sage sums up why the Championship is the best League around. A good recruitment summer and you can go from relegation scrap to the Playoffs , especially with the extended format coming in.2

I’m not saying it’s impossible to go from where we are now to 8th, but we can’t get sucked into the fantasy that should be the baseline target or expectationSage said:

I’m not saying it is an expectation or that it should be. I’m saying Jones himself will be expecting to be pushing for that 8th spot, whether we achieve it or not.Crispywood said:

I think ruling it out is also dangerous because although it may manage expectations of some, it’s important for us to have some form of ambition beyond improving only a few places. If people have an issue or set their expectations themselves too highly without understanding where Jones has taken us from, that’s down to them. My point is simply that it is possible, and I can say confidently that someone will finish in the top 8 next season that almost no one would have thought. Jones will be pushing for that someone to be us.2 -

I like Jones using the word "Ruthless" in his interview he talked about being a winner and I think that's where he wants to aim.
He knows as well as we do that this league is mental and a gust a wind, some good recruitment and you can be on the bring of a 9 figure payday.
This is why we need to be here.0 -
Millwall over performing? How very dare you 😁Sage said:

in the 8 seasons since we’ve been back up we have finished top half in all but one (which was our second season) and only just missed out on top 6 on about 4 occasions. I wouldn’t describe where we finished this season as over performing. Just a natural progression and an ‘everything clicking’ type of season. I predicted we would finish 5th at the start of this season so maybe over performing by a place or two, but that’s it.Agree about Hull though. They were rubbish last season and one of the worst teams we played so what they achieved this season is nothing short of incredible and just shows it can be done with the right management and recruitment.3 -
69 points would be the playoffs next season, I think people need to manage expectations, 60 points would be a decent progression. We are told that we got promoted from league 1 too early, we are nowhere near ready to be attempting to be promoted again. We are 2 seasons away from a mid table budget, flukeing promotion would go drastically wrong.Sage said:Think the board’s expectations would be to finish anywhere above 14th. Would be great to go up obviously, but id rather have at least a small chance of not coming straight back down.

I would say you over performed because I don’t think it was in anyone’s expectations or envisioned that you would still have a chance at automatic promotion come the final day of the season. You’ve done well at this level now for a little while and have a good manager but I think you’ve still out performed what was expected.MillwallFan said:

I don’t think 60 points is that much progress at all. We lost how many of our home games come the end of the season? We also went on a long losing streak and runs with only 1 win in however many, and yet we finished 7 points off 60.shine166 said:

Its 13th and 6 places higher than now. We definitely had incredibly bad runs of form, but you could also argue we punched above our weight early doors. As soon as our style of play was found out, we have not offered much at all. Unless we recruit well we may well just carry on with the kind of form we've seen over the last couple of months. A team that rarely scores more than 1 goal and never comes back to win from going a goal behind, will do great to get to 60 points.Sage said:

One of my aims for next season would be to achieve a more settled line-up and build strong partnerships. We achieved that in middle of defence with the trio of Ramsay, Jones, Bell. We have seen it in the past with Edwards and TC on the left. The midfield of Doc / Cov / Carey worked to begin with but we got found out and definitely need to upgrade there. We have no settled partnership up front.Successful teams tend to have a really solid foundation and of course ride their luck a bit with injuries across the season. I do think any squad rebuild / strengthening should have that goal in mind - we’ve suffered from way too much chopping and changing this year, some enforced but also a lot of NJ tinkering.6
-
Our best period of the season had a pretty settled formula up top of Kelman and TC starting and running themselves into the ground, before Leaburn and Olaofe came on and we went more direct.Weegie Addick said:One of my aims for next season would be to achieve a more settled line-up and build strong partnerships. But he’d maybe sometimes be better off sticking with a team even if we lose, and as you say letting those partnerships build0 -
I think when you have a squad of players that in the main are at best lower half Championship and more probably top end league one and of limited ability I think it’s very difficult to find a settled lineup. I’d say our best players and injuries aside were pretty much all defenders so that’s where partnerships were forged to good effect. Upgrading the first eleven with players that are bought in to be starters should, all things being equal help having a settled team no end and enable partnerships to flourish.0

I’m slightly concerned about how Bullish jones has been in his recent interview. Surely sets up for targets that we might not hit.0
-
Surely he has to be doesn’t he ? He’s no doubt been having conversations with the owners for months in conjunction with Rodwell and Chappell and will have a list of targets that fit in with the budget. He knows already what he has to spend and where it’s most needed. I’d be concerned if he wasn’t bullish. We won’t hit all our first choices but they’ll be alternatives of equal quality identified for months in some cases.AberystwythAddick said:I’m slightly concerned about how Bullish jones has been in his recent interview. I think the best we can hope for is consolidation and maybe a mid table finish and play some actual football along the way . Is that too much to ask ?1
-
Clearly my expectations are lower than everyone else as I just don't want to get relegated. I think NJ will outperform that expectation but for now I just want to be in the Championship for 27/281
