Maybe it's just me, but normally I 'get' Banksy's straight away and I like them too. This one's gonna take some explaining though. It the moment, I'm with the old guy in video.0

It portrays someone in a suit, possibly in a position of power (a Politician?) and the flag they are carrying (their allegiance) is blinding them to the fact they are about to step off a precipice.Stig said:Maybe it's just me, but normally I 'get' Banksy's straight away and I like them too. It’s someone marching stridently (almost goose-stepping?) carrying a flag or a banner. His fervour is blinding him. Could see that being late 1930s Germany. Or it could be Stalin’s Soviet Union. It doesn’t really matter. In fact Banksy explained in the title: ‘Blinded by the Flag’.I think it’ll be seen as one of his greatest works.20

You could take your pick of any number of leaders in this troubled old world. Much as I like your suggestion, I think it's more generic.bolloxbolder said:

It seems to me to be a dig at the way the World is going which probably includes Farage. Could just as easily include Trump and Putin. I guess that because the flag is undefined. Where it is sited is clearly going to be significant. I suppose that is what art is. It can mean different things to different people, but this might be one of the less ambiguous ones. I would imagine Banksy would love the video with the bloke's comments at the end. It sets it off so well.bolloxbolder said:

Never heard of Banksy before but I love that. If they sell minitures, someone should stick it up deep up Farage’s arsehole.

I hardly think we should consider the political leanings of some one whose life is so sheltered, they have not heard of Banksey. Agree with the sentiment of the piece ,but on its intended generic level.jimmymelrose said:Never heard of Banksy before but I love that. Perhaps somebody should have a think about their profile pic in relation to this bit of art…shine166 said:5 -
yeah, thats decent
I think that could be a dig at so many different people too3 -
Be interesting to see how long it lasts there...1

Isn’t it true that despite everything political comments are on this thread and the fuel thread?
I was under the impression that those even venturing within a tiny bit of political conversation would be banned by the moderators.
In terms of history 2026 is the 100 year anniversary of the seminal British General Strike, which had marches and banners and flags, so maybe Banksy has created a memorial to those brave idealists that participated in that General Strike.

utter woke nonsense15

Yeah that’s why I like it and it works as a piece of art, it’s a dig at every flag shagger, which is why I mentioned OP’s profile pic…cafc999 said:yeah, thats decent

I think the mods try and strike a difficult balance between not being overly censorial on the one hand and trying to maintain a degree of harmony on the other. There seems to be a cycle where political posts build to a point where it starts to get out of hand, then there's a clampdown. But perhaps political posting on Charlton Life is a bit like alcohol: there are some who can enjoy it in moderation and others who shouldn't touch a single drop.

Agree. Pretty sure that's what got you banned on here last time me old matejose said:Isn’t it true that despite everything political comments are on this thread and the fuel thread?

I do get your point, but its a cause I support, rather than my whole identity.Diebythesword said:

The issue is it is a newsworthy item and the interpretations are going to be political because the meaning is political. Unless of course somebody can identify an alternative meaning.1
-
But it’s your profile picture? To people like me who don’t know you, it comes across as your whole identity. I also don’t think that’s the point of banksy’s sculpture. The subject is a man in a suit (presumably completely unrelated to the cause they are fully chest supporting - the cause not being their entire identity, otherwise they’d be dressed in full “cause” regalia) and is blinded by the cause they support that they’re walking themselves off the platform.shine166 said:

Has anyone nicked it yet? I mean they managed to put it up there with no one noticing. Isn't that what normally happens, and then they flog it at auction0

I thought it was a tribute to the pre game flag wavers at the Valley as a nod to us securing championship football.
Could be wide of the mark but I reckon that's what it's all about.

I thought banned members then go away and show a bit of enterprise like this.

Its definitely not gone over my head, I see it as blind Nationalism, you can be patriotic and still sees pros and cons.. you dont do that with a nationalistic outlook . If the person in the sculpture was wearing full regalia, Banksy would have to be more specific with the detail/clothing it was wearing, you then alienate a people and it probably ends up being labeled as hate speech and devicive, because you're targeting a whole group of people which he doesn't really do. In all of his pro Palestine work over the years hes never been anti Israel as such or targeted the people.Diebythesword said:

Left or right leaning you can buy into the concept and its the ambiguity which enables that. The flag is purely symbolic, I doubt he thinks people that go to the WC and wave a ST George's cross are scumbags.
