New Banksy in central London

They've put a fence around it, strangely though it has been signed, which he hasnt done for well over a decade due to them being cut out and sold.fenlandaddick said:Has anyone nicked it yet? I mean they managed to put it up there with no one noticing. Isn't that what normally happens, and then they flog it at auction0 -

For me two things stand out, one is that the sculptural style of the flag is very Soviet era, in fact it reminds me of the statue in Kyiv signifying Ukraine and Russias friendship that was pulled down. The other significance is the suit, not military uniform, perhaps given its location is a hint towards politicians positioning themselves in Military campaigns?1

Would be very healthy for society if room for nuance and non binary positions were able to exist rather than automatic partinsanship and blind tribalism and echo chamberism regardless of what side of the coin.shine166 said:
Its definitely not gone over my head, I see it as blind Nationalism, you can be patriotic and still sees pros and cons.. you dont do that with a nationalistic outlook . If the person in the sculpture was wearing full regalia, Banksy would have to be more specific with the detail/clothing it was wearing, you then alienate a people and it probably ends up being labeled as hate speech and devicive, because you're targeting a whole group of people which he doesn't really do. In all of his pro Palestine work over the years hes never been anti Israel as such or targeted the people.Diebythesword said:
But it’s your profile picture? To people like me who don’t know you, it comes across as your whole identity. I also don’t think that’s the point of banksy’s sculpture. The subject is a man in a suit (presumably completely unrelated to the cause they are fully chest supporting - the cause not being their entire identity, otherwise they’d be dressed in full “cause” regalia) and is blinded by the cause they support that they’re walking themselves off the platform.shine166 said:
I do get your point, but it’s a cause I support, rather than my whole identity.Diebythesword said:
Yeah that’s why I like it and it works as a piece of art, it’s a dig at every flag shagger, which is why I mentioned OP’s profile pic…cafc999 said:yeah, thats decent

Left or right leaning you can buy into the concept and its the ambiguity which enables that.1 -

I was under the impression that those even venturing within a tiny bit of political conversation would be banned by the moderators.
In terms of history 2026 is the 100 year anniversary of the seminal British General Strike, which had marches and banners and flags, so maybe Banksy has created a memorial to those brave idealists that participated in that General Strike.

Looks like he got to grips with AI as well with image generation. Wonders will never cease.2 -
As has been mentioned how did he/they get it up there without being noticed? Just intrigues me, it can't suddenly appear overnight without anyone noticing it being put up there.0

Probably represents Starmer leading us blindly into a recession and not being able to do anything about it 😁4

Absolutely agree, I'm definitely what people would class as left wing, but have no problem listening to someone like Farage and agreeing with some things he says. Unfortunately the modern world of algorithms just push people further left or right, into political cults.RodneyCharltonTrotta said:

I like to think of it as a pit-stop type excercise. Rehearsed over and over until they got it perfect, then the team appear from all directions and thirty seconds later they are walking away from a finished statue...AndyG said:I must admit to being totally ignorant when it comes to art. However, Banksy's own brief footage shows a lorry putting down the plinth, so at least that bit must be pretty hefty.
I think is a brilliant piece of work.1 -
Well, yes, that’s the point I’m making. It’s a great piece of art because you can interprete it for whatever part of the political spectrum you’re on. However the message is that political movements and nationalism (pro Palestinian is by definition a nationalist movement) blind otherwise normal people to their own downfall. I was saying perhaps that’s something you should think about re your profile picture and recent events in Golders Green.shine166 said:

I think this is where lack of nuance and presumption is an issue and not separating Nationalism, Patriotism and supporting something. I support the Palestinian people and my profile pic went up when i was raising just over 16k for a charity that was helping the people being slaughtered during recent years.... doesn't mean I'm pro hamas though and the actions of them. I definitely think that the Palestinian people should have a home and these issues have been widely caused by the Balfour declaration which was enacted by us Brits.
The Golders green event by the person with mental health issues was awful, as were all the other 1000's of knife related incidents in this country over the last 12 months.
As yet I'm unaware of any manifesto being found declaring direct potential targeting of Jewish people, even though we've been told that it was his sole intention.
I would say though, if we continue down this route the thread will end up being closed and it would be a shame.

Tbh, stick a bit of high viz on and you can get away with anything. I hardly expect someone from WCC to pull up in a van and ask what they are doing.3

Some people are very binary with their responses, unsuprisingly given the digital world we live in, it's either a "1" or a "0", yes or no, on or off...shine166 said:I think this is where lack of nuance and presumption is an issue. Knowing his politics, I’d agree. But he prefers generalities to specifics, as a rule.bolloxbolder said:
I reckon it is his dig at FarageJamesSeed said:It’s someone marching stridently (almost goose-stepping?) carrying a flag or a banner. His fervour is blinding him. It doesn’t really matter. In fact Banksy explained in the title: ‘Blinded by the Flag’.I think it’ll be seen as one of his greatest works.0 -
