Oh dear getting labelled stupid for having an opinion. Was the hottest summer in the last 100 years (1976) was that global warming? Also answer the question why wasn’t global warming brought up last week when it was 12 degrees? Or do you just enjoy watching BBC news and them showing a bit of ice breaking off a glacier scare you?8

I'm expecting seriously cheap food this year.
It's been pissing it down most of the year up here in West Yorkshire, followed by intermittent days of sunshine.0 -

Oh right, all those 32° late May bank holidays from when you were growing up...TD_Addick said:Got to love its “climate change” enthusiasts, last week when it was 12 degrees its radio silence then soon as it goes over 28 “climate change, climate change” then back under the rocks they go next week when the temperatures drop. Less rat-thin men bowling about shirtless today, but it is still 10am so most will still be in their wanking pits
I'm definitely going to install air conditioning in my bedroom, I love the hot days but the hot nights are disgraceful

Few points about 76 and why it's different from what we've seen the last few summers.TD_Addick said:Oh dear getting labelled stupid for having an opinion. - it was long and very dry but for most of the summer it was mid-low 20s. Days exceeding 30 were actually relatively few by recent standards.
- it covered a large chunk of the UK but not the whole of it. What we see now (and in 2025 and 2023) are events stretching across continental boundaries.
- it was a once in a 100 year event which is now being exceeded multiple times a summer. And across whole summers on average every 2 years.
That's literally the definition of climate change. Increased frequency of extremes. The reason no one is talking about the 12 degrees last week is because for the time of year that is within the usual margin for error. 35°+ over multiple days is not.
Hope that helps.25 -
You've started the Climate Change denial bingo card. 1976 is a very popular reason that deniers use. They forget that it was a one off, that's why it's memorable. Breaking temperature records is happening a lot more. 97% of the world's climate scientists agree that global warming due to the actions of man, is responsible for climate change. I prefer to believe those scientists.TD_Addick said:Oh dear getting labelled stupid for having an opinion. Was the hottest summer in the last 100 years (1976) was that global warming? @cantersaddick I feel so stupid now you’ve put it like that, you’ve completely changed my mind buddy. Eveytime it goes above 28 I will take my frustrations out on the cows farts which apparently are now contributing to this terrible climate change which is destroying our planet. I will now eat vegan burgers and walk to my holiday destinations instead of polluting the atmosphere. Thanks buddy you were right I’m stupid.

Why have you decided to respond to a really polite post disagreeing with you by being hugely sarcastic and rude? Is it because there's no science to back up your opinion?TD_Addick said:@cantersaddick I feel so stupid now you’ve put it like that, you’ve completely changed my mind buddy. I've employed a tactic of starting work at 6am and then doing the bare minimum in the afternoon. Cannot function in this heat. 18 degrees and a light breeze is perfect for me thanks.1

It’s so clear from the data that the Earth is getting gradually warmer and extreme examples from the past don’t disprove that. We are consistently breaking records for heat and average temperatures are getting higher year on year, I don’t see how people can ever deny that.I’m turning 30 and in my memory British Summers are getting warmer and winters milder. Through my childhood days over 30 were rare and we’d be almost guaranteed a few days off school a year for heavy snow. Now you can almost guarantee multiple days over 30 and heavy snow seems to be less frequent6

I didn't call you stupid mate. No need to get so defensive. I simply explained the scienced backed logic that explained why your point wasn't valid. You don't have to take it on board. That's your choice. I have personal experience of when people go down conspiracy rabbit holes and how hard it is for them to break the grip that has on them.TD_Addick said:@cantersaddick I feel so stupid now you’ve put it like that, you’ve completely changed my mind buddy. I Remember days back in 60s when we had "double" summer time and was still light at 10.30pm.
The days also seemed warm and sunny with out the oppressive humidity we experience now.
I can look out from my bedroom window and see the blanket of pollution that hangs over London most summer evening.
Just look at Delhi to see how temp and pollution can render a city almost un-liveable.2 -
Air con in the office is Actually a little chilly. Looking forward to poping out of lunch to warm up!2

Sorry to be the one that breaks this to you, but there's always a risk of getting labelled stupid for having an opinion when that opinion is held against the crushing weight of evidence.TD_Addick said:Oh dear getting labelled stupid for having an opinion. The hot summer of 1976 was quite likely exacerbated by the level of carbon in the atmosphere, but the main factor driving that one was the positioning of the jet stream. Just because global warming is a real thing, doesn't mean that there aren't other factors at play. That said, the massive rise in carbon in our atmosphere (from 332ppm in 1976 to 432ppm just fifty years later) means that those other factors are decreasing in importance. Just looking at the trend, I think it's important to ask why in 250 years of meteorological recording, nine of the ten hottest days in the UK have occurred after 1976. The statistical probability of that happening by chance is tiny.
Although not in popular parlance by then, the term global warming had already been coined as early as 1975 by esteemed geochemist Wallace Broecker who wrote, "a strong case can be made that the present cooling trend will, within a decade or so, give way to a pronounced warming induced by carbon dioxide. By analogy with similar events in the past, the natural climatic cooling which, since 1940, has more than compensated for the carbon dioxide effect, will soon bottom out. Once this happens, the exponential rise in the atmospheric carbon dioxide content will tend to become a significant factor and by early in the next century will have driven the mean planetary temperature beyond the limits experienced during the last 1000 years". Just because most people hadn't heard the phrase back in 1976, doesn't mean that the early indicators of the current trend weren't there, and doesn't mean that no-one had identified them.
As for the 'bit of ice breaking off a glacier', that is quite literally the tip of the iceberg. Since the 1970s nearly 50,000 (fifty thousand) square miles of sea ice have been lost.
