Absolutely loved that basically the first thing Miles did when he came on was run through Sanderson and clatter him to the floor as if he wasn't there. Real show of intent, leaving his mark on the big defender.
Hopefully a sign he'll be making more of his physical attributes this season21 -

It's good to see post match comments where everyone seems happy ...... apart from the fans zone, the cooling breaks, the big screen, the fans bar, valley express, the covered End being full of twats, etc.

The home side started brightly. We looked a level up in terms of being comfortable and purposeful in possession. Just over eleven minutes had elapsed on the clock when the first shot on target tested either keeper. It was Karlan Grant from the edge of the box on the left but it was ultimately a tame effort straight at the Derby keeper. The Addicks managed to maintain the pressure, poking and probing, until about sixteen minutes when Derby swung the momentum their way.
On 22 minutes Derby found a way through. Lloyd Jones was dragged out of position and, after a one-two on the edge of the box, Szmodics managed to leave Koumetio behind to receive the ball in front of goal and slot easily past Will Mannion. A goal down, Charlton’s confidence then dropped.
After half an hour had elapsed Nathan Jones swapped his wingers, with Campbell moving over to the left and Grant to the right. This paid dividends again, as it did last week at Cheltenham, having an immediate impact. Campbell came alive on the ball and the momentum swung back in Charlton’s favour; he looked dangerous driving into the box on multiple occasions. It was on 37 minutes when one such drive resulted in Derby scrambling in the box only to clear the ball as far as Danny McNamara, whose half volley was sweetly struck but ultimately blocked. Charlton finished the half strong, with Campbell forcing a save and Derby retreating deep under pressure. Derby were able to see the half out with the one goal lead but I thought Charlton acquitted themselves well and were unlucky to be behind. Charlton looked a decent Championship side on first look but even the smallest mistakes are more-than-likely punished at this level and the Addicks bore the brunt of that lesson in the first forty-five.
Charlton started the second half as they finished the first. A few dangerous foray’s forward put Derby under pressure but it was Tyreece Campbell’s attempt to win the ball in the box that resulted in a penalty shout. It didn’t look cast iron on first viewing but on replay it’s not obvious that the defender got anything on the ball and it could have gone the home side’s way.
On 59 minutes Sonny Carey was replaced by Millenic Alli and Matty Godden made way for Miles Leaburn. Poetic justice struck right after the subs came on when Karlan Grant swung a ball in from the edge of the box to find Lloyd Jones leaping like a salmon to head it past the hapless Derby keeper. Drawing the home side level after his poor positioning for Derby’s goal was sweet redemption for the Addicks’ new captain.
On 73 minutes Joe Rankin-Costello came on for Karlan Grant. The Addicks continued the pressure, mostly through Campbell, but it was Derby that, on tested the goal next when a counter attack led to a snapshot that Mannion did well to push wide. After dispatching the resultant corner the Addicks broke forward on the counter themselves but tired legs, on both sides, lead to a drop in quality and nothing to break the deadlock for either side.
Well, until a period of Derby possession left them vulnerable on the counter when Conor Coventry found himself with the ball at his feet at the edge of his own box. He picked a forward pass to Joe Rankin-Costello who pushed it on to Miles Leaburn, who being one with fresh legs, collected it in his own half, splitting the Derby defence, and pushing ahead on the break. He marshaled the retreating defenders well until his blocked shot fell to Tyreece Campbell. When the chance looked to have been snuffed, Campbell unleashed a left-footed shot from a tight angle that gave the keeper no chance. Charlton were ahead on just over 80 minutes, with Tyreece Campbell’s valiant efforts rewarded with the potential winning goal. Sign the deal!!!
A raft of changes were made by Nathan Jones with an eye on replenishing tired legs and shifting to five at the back to see things out. Derby brought on former-Addick Corey Blackett-Taylor and the referee signaled eight minutes of added time, both of which combined to fray Charlton nerves further. On just under 95 minutes Will Mannion made a decent diving save. Charlton had retreated to defending deep and relinquishing possession as the minutes slipped away. And it worked! The home side saw out the victory against a dangerous, if uninspiring, Derby County.
I thought the performance was excellent, particularly given the task of integrating the new players and the new formation on the first day of the new season, when fitness isn’t as sharp as it will be. Better performances were what the Charlton faithful have been after and today signals a turn towards better football. Yet, as always, it’s the result that is sweetest!
The Championship journey continues this season in SE7 and it looks to be a potentially exciting one!

I think it’s lazy stereotyping rather than racism, although I appreciate the line is fine . The lazy card with TC , I’ve never understood anyway. He works as hard as anyone else . Exactly what we want from him. Last two seasons have been disrupted and I think without trying to be over dramatic, this season could be make or break at Charlton for him. I chatted with two young Derby fans as we queued in the usual bottleneck to get back into the station. They were very gracious in defeat and told me we'd be fine this season. They were just annoyed at their own implosion. No bitterness or digs at us at all. Perhaps that's just the preserve of their keyboard warriors back at home.TheHerminator said:

An uncomfortably hot day (how anybody watching the game has the cheek to boo the hydration breaks is beyond me, particularly so when the ref called them at precisely the points in the game when Nathan needed to have a quick chat with the team and can no longer give the nod to his keeper to fall to the ground).
Two evenly matched sides, both having a good go at each other and making space and time on the ball a premium as we’ve got used to - West Ham playing a fellow PL relegated side today means Charlton will have the honour of providing the customary ‘welcome to the Championship’ game next week 😁). We got the 3 points and the all around boost that a win brings but I suspect both managers will have welcomed seeing their sides look unusually fit and organised so early on.
Maybe something to do with the weather but I thought the home support noise was particularly loud yesterday.
Coventry was man of the match for me, he seemed to be everywhere and put in a Kinsella mode performance. His (awesome) new teammates must be just what he needed.
As posted elsewhere the Big Screen and catering performances were, putting it politely, a shit show.Zero bookings for Charlton players yesterday underlines how much control our players thought they had that they didn’t need to give any away.
Big shout out to Leaburn. Bringing him on when Godden had worn their defence out was just perfect, especially after the naive attempt to obstruct him ended up with Miles just running through the player and leaving him in a heap on the floor.

What I loved most about yesterday re the squad is I feel there is significantly more to come as they gel and build partnerships and understanding. We got glimpses yesterday but it will take a while for these to develop. TC put in a number of decent crosses but no-one really got on the end of them. Bell, Billy and LJ were pulled apart for the Derby goal. Sometimes CC and NC needed runners creating space ahead of them. We played it in the air a bit too much. All things we can improve.
The new signings all looked strong too. It didn’t really click for Grant but he kept at it and caused them problems. Much more to come from him especially as we know he has the talent. I gave mainly 7s on the player marks as I believe there is still significant room for improvement. Yet we came from behind to win.Two big tests coming up now at WHU and Tottenham away ole ole. Keep calm and carry on!9 -
I had always thought TC was half asleep rather than lazy - he always grafts 100% and does the hard yards, tracking back and covering....but awareness and self-belief was a bit lacking.wmcf123 said:

He always seems to come cross as a shy bloke in interviews - maybe it's just a case of an introvert finding his inner extrovert self?
If he can do that, TC could well be capable of playing in the Prem.
He certainly has the stamina and ability on the ball.

Queueing for the station I generally found the Derby supporters pretty decent. We were able to chat about the impact of CBT coming on, Smodics going off, the switch of TC, next fixtures and suchlike as normal football fans.9goalswentpastperry said:

Naturally they were down about losing as I was up about winning, but compared to a lot of other fans we’re obliged to dance the Charlton Station quadrille with I thought they were definitely OK.10 -

The big screen had the time so large you could probably read it from outer space, but the players names and numbers were tiny.
Maybe it works OK on a nearby computer screen for whoever was setting it up, but as a service to fans it was pretty useless.6 -

Doesn't surprise me Josh. I told the story of the guy in the Covered end giving Kevin Lisbie grief, during and even after he scored 2 goals down the Jimmy Seed end.
By the time Lisbie scored his hat trick goal in front of the covered end this guy just sat down with his head in his hands.
Kevin had a languid style similar to TC but it feels really personal with the moronic element.
Some Mother's do have 'em' and most gravitate to being Charlton Critics which is a shame as we have some really good supporters.5 -
We are unquestionably better and stronget all over the pitch than last year. The midfield is still our weakness as respects turning defence into attack so we still default to humping it a bit, but again so much better than last year. TC in his favoured position is a major plus - if we can get the right side sorted it will surely give us more options going forward.
A good solid performance yesterday with some real quality in there and am quietly optimistic we will have too much for 5 or 6 teams in the division next year. Well done the lads and NJ..

TC's workrate was superb yesterday. Some amazing sprints to chase lost causes or press defenders. And yet again he played the full 90.
It has to be said that CBT was a man on mission when he came on. Ludicrous to boo him, which would spur him on even more.8 -
The last home game of last season against Hull I wrote about how I missed my stop, ended up in Swanley, got an Uber to the ground and we won. Was it a lucky omen?
Yesterday, with Waterloo East shut, I got the SL11 at Greenwich North. Decided, upon another fan's advice, not to get off the bus when it clearly stated the Charlton Station bus stop was closed. Mistake, I ended up at Woolwich Station. So that's twice I've overshot my detination and twice we have won.
I am not promising to do it a third time.
Incidentally, what a mess Woolwich Road is at the moment. Any ideas how long this is going on? Doesn't look hopeful for the near future.3 -
First 15 minutes, we looked pretty good, but then, seemingly out of nowhere, we had a 15-minute spell where the defence completely disintegrated. Derby suddenly had acres of space in attacking positions and, unsurprisingly, they scored. For that spell, we looked very much like the team that struggled at times last season.
But shortly after they scored, NJ changed the shape and we looked solid again for the rest of the half. After the break, both teams had spells on top without really troubling either keeper, but thankfully we grabbed the equaliser during one of ours, before TC produced a moment of magic to win it.
We did sit a bit too deep for my liking in the final 10 minutes or so, and we really let CBT run riot when he came on. I'd like us to be a bit more ruthless about killing games off when we take the lead, but I'm far too happy about the result to get annoyed about that. Overall, a great performance and a brilliant result.

We won so everyone is delighted of course and doesn't see the problem, but I do find it odd. His stamina is pretty good so its maybe not a big problem, and yes some people have odd genetics, but these are professional highly paid athletes and I don't get why he can't push himself to get that extra 10-15% improvement in athleticism he'd have by getting into better shape. Its really not that hard.0 -
Thought we controlled the game well in the most part. Leaburn changed the game for sure and in what is a moohoosive season for TC he’s started like a train! Great start to the season from the boys with effort all over the pitch…UTA2

A lot's been already said, we're in CE Lower, and are surrounded by TC Haters. My daughter leaned over at one point and said "I don't think I can put up with this all season again".... It made our celebration of his winner all the sweeter. He was ineffective on the right and improved when moved across, I think some of it is the feeding from the left and right hand defenders, I think Macnamara was doing this less than Bell, but he got forward a bit later in the game so hopefully this can be worked on. Thought Grant worked hard and made an impact but definitely more to come from him. Lovely cameo from Mesik as well5

I’m very much looking forward to seeing Ouma slot into that midfield. Having him with his energy and ability albeit based on YouTube clips should stiffen up that middle. Fingers crossed anyway6
