    I've just watched the highlights on Sky.

    One thing I didn't appreciate yesterday, because Grant was on the opposite side of the penalty area to my seat and plenty of bodies in the way, was how good his cross was for Lloyd's goal.

    Not just in terms of the accuracy and it being to Jones's advantage but how he was able to dig it out from underneath himself. He wasn't in the best position to make a cross, with respect to where the ball was in relation to his feet, but he still managed to pull out the sand wedge and lift it into the danger area.

    I was with two of my young grandson’s, they were up to their usual autograph hunting after the game. I think it’s the happiest I have seen TC when he came out after getting changed.

    The style of play yesterday was light years better than most of last season. People have said that Derby played some nice football, and they did at times, but the interesting stats for me were that Derby played more backward passes than we did, and more long balls.

    I totally different team now with better quality players. Midfield a hell of a lot better. Looked deficient before leaburn came on upfront. Thought carey had a poor game. Whatever the tactic was with Godden it did not work. Love Matty Godden but throwing the ball up for him to head amongst giants was pointless. Great start to the season.

    I'm surprised and a little bit disappointed at the lack of recognition of my part in the victory. As I said pre-match, I was unable to make the game and expected a Charlton victory as we invariably win at home when I can't make it.  So, well done crookester but no, I'm not staying away for the rest of the season ;-)

    A new season kicked off this afternoon in warm, summery conditions at The Valley with Derby County the visitors looking to test the new look Addicks and Nathan Jones’ 4-2-3-1 formation.

    The home side started brightly. We looked a level up in terms of being comfortable and purposeful in possession. Just over eleven minutes had elapsed on the clock when the first shot on target tested either keeper. It was Karlan Grant from the edge of the box on the left but it was ultimately a tame effort straight at the Derby keeper. The Addicks managed to maintain the pressure, poking and probing, until about sixteen minutes when Derby swung the momentum their way.

    On 22 minutes Derby found a way through. Lloyd Jones was dragged out of position and, after a one-two on the edge of the box, Szmodics managed to leave Koumetio behind to receive the ball in front of goal and slot easily past Will Mannion. A goal down, Charlton’s confidence then dropped.

    After half an hour had elapsed Nathan Jones swapped his wingers, with Campbell moving over to the left and Grant to the right. This paid dividends again, as it did last week at Cheltenham, having an immediate impact. Campbell came alive on the ball and the momentum swung back in Charlton’s favour; he looked dangerous driving into the box on multiple occasions. It was on 37 minutes when one such drive resulted in Derby scrambling in the box only to clear the ball as far as Danny McNamara, whose half volley was sweetly struck but ultimately blocked. Charlton finished the half strong, with Campbell forcing a save and Derby retreating deep under pressure. Derby were able to see the half out with the one goal lead but I thought Charlton acquitted themselves well and were unlucky to be behind. Charlton looked a decent Championship side on first look but even the smallest mistakes are more-than-likely punished at this level and the Addicks bore the brunt of that lesson in the first forty-five.

    Charlton started the second half as they finished the first. A few dangerous foray’s forward put Derby under pressure but it was Tyreece Campbell’s attempt to win the ball in the box that resulted in a penalty shout. It didn’t look cast iron on first viewing but on replay it’s not obvious that the defender got anything on the ball and it could have gone the home side’s way.

    On 59 minutes Sonny Carey was replaced by Millenic Alli and Matty Godden made way for Miles Leaburn. Poetic justice struck right after the subs came on when Karlan Grant swung a ball in from the edge of the box to find Lloyd Jones leaping like a salmon to head it past the hapless Derby keeper. Drawing the home side level after his poor positioning for Derby’s goal was sweet redemption for the Addicks’ new captain.

    On 73 minutes Joe Rankin-Costello came on for Karlan Grant. The Addicks continued the pressure, mostly through Campbell, but it was Derby that, on tested the goal next when a counter attack led to a snapshot that Mannion did well to push wide. After dispatching the resultant corner the Addicks broke forward on the counter themselves but tired legs, on both sides, lead to a drop in quality and nothing to break the deadlock for either side.

    Well, until a period of Derby possession left them vulnerable on the counter when Conor Coventry found himself with the ball at his feet at the edge of his own box. He picked a forward pass to Joe Rankin-Costello who pushed it on to Miles Leaburn, who being one with fresh legs, collected it in his own half, splitting the Derby defence, and pushing ahead on the break. He marshaled the retreating defenders well until his blocked shot fell to Tyreece Campbell. When the chance looked to have been snuffed, Campbell unleashed a left-footed shot from a tight angle that gave the keeper no chance. Charlton were ahead on just over 80 minutes, with Tyreece Campbell’s valiant efforts rewarded with the potential winning goal. Sign the deal!!!

    A raft of changes were made by Nathan Jones with an eye on replenishing tired legs and shifting to five at the back to see things out. Derby brought on former-Addick Corey Blackett-Taylor and the referee signaled eight minutes of added time, both of which combined to fray Charlton nerves further. On just under 95 minutes Will Mannion made a decent diving save. Charlton had retreated to defending deep and relinquishing possession as the minutes slipped away. And it worked! The home side saw out the victory against a dangerous, if uninspiring, Derby County.

    I thought the performance was excellent, particularly given the task of integrating the new players and the new formation on the first day of the new season, when fitness isn’t as sharp as it will be. Better performances were what the Charlton faithful have been after and today signals a turn towards better football. Yet, as always, it’s the result that is sweetest!

    The Championship journey continues this season in SE7 and it looks to be a potentially exciting one!

    I'm much more interested in where jimmymelrose was when he read out the report to his son in a restaurant.

    We know that the son was in a restuarant ... and you'd hope that jimmymelrose was in the same restaurant, but that's not clear.  Imagine if jimmymelrose was standing in a nearby carpark, for example.

    "Can you hear me, son?  No, no.  Ignore the waiter.  I have important match detail from LoOkOut."

    I'm sure other diners/pilgrims were delighted to have their meals enlightened/blighted by the sermon.

    This is the kind of thing we'll need to see more of if the talk of the team "evolving" and developing is more than just hot air. Managing to pull a decent cross out of the bag under pressure, or dig out a shot from nowhere a la TC's goal.
    Last season those opportunities would have been shanked hopelessly or more likely we would stop dead and pass the ball backwards or sideways and kill the chance dead.

    One swallow does not make a summer but at least there are positive signs.

    It’s going to take a while for things to gel into the style Jones wants. Probably a few months and I very much don’t think that starting eleven is anywhere close to how it’ll look by then.

    One of those came in the League Cup, but maybe he just needed a year to get used to this level seeing he'd never played Championship Football before? - Same with the likes of Leaburn... Could be a big season for both to kick on with their experience now
    Think it's more likely due to having other attacking players on the pitch. Last season teams just needed to nullify TC to take out our only threat.

    I think more relevant comparison would be our starting squad now and our starting squad at the begining of last season, to show just how far the squad has developed.

    Exactly what we want from him. Last two seasons have been disrupted and I think without trying to be over dramatic, this season could be make or break at Charlton for him. He’s got pretty much everything in his game and if he can bring it all together regularly then we’ve got the player we all hoped he’d be. He made a difference yesterday.
    Agree mate a really defining season ahead for Miles. He came on yesterday and you could really see he was up for it from the second he arrived. If he can do that from the start he will nail down his place. His hold up play was exceptional as well 
    I see Miles as more of a starter for us in that formation witj 1 up top and 3 quick mobile lads in behind with Godden the ‘finisher’ for the last 20/30

    Tonight on Talksport when Magestic mentioned Spurs were playing us in the cup Pardew said ‘they’re a good side’. He then dissed The Red, Red Robin by saying when at Charlton he said ‘what is this?’ and said no one would be intimidated by it. Prick.

    It’s crazy isn’t it. This tactic has become the norm now when the ball is played back to the keeper from kick off. The centre back directly and intentionally blocks the advancing striker despite the ball being nowhere in the vicinity. 

    Surely it’s obstruction? And as Miles refused to go around the player he runs through him and concedes a free kick.

    Was good to see though and I think it’s the best I’ve seen Miles play for a couple of seasons.

    Darren Bent on the other hand said "NO CHANCE" when the other fella said Charlton for the drop, although he was half on a windup by saying Derby immediately afterwards

    Saw him outside the west stand before the game, told my 10yo son to go and say hello, and he bottled it, said he wants a burger in the fans zone first then he will say hello  :D. Explained it doesn't quite work like that.
