One change from the previous league match starting eleven this afternoon, with Ivan Mesik coming in for the injured Billy Koumetio to take on the potato botherers from Lancashire.

Patience was the word for the first half. Charlton prodded, speculated, and probed in attack to little avail. Conversely, the home side were well organised in defence and limited the visitors to six half efforts, with only one on target. Charlton had even fewer shots, with none on target.

When the Addicks came out for the second half, Millenic Alli had replaced Sonny Carey, taking Karlan Grant’s place on the right and moving Grant to the centre. Things opened up for Charlton early on, with Tyreece Campbell having the measure of former-Addick Harry Clarke, going at him multiple times and delivering crosses into the centre that put pressure on the visitors. Miles Leaburn was hauled down in the box and had blood running down his face from an open wound above his left eye, yet the referee was unmoved, presumably attributing it all to mutual wrestling.

It was Karlan Grant that found the breakthrough. He earnt a free kick on the edge of the box that he scuffed into the wall, with the ball falling to Conor Coventry. His sweeping pass out to the right was beautifully controlled by Alli. He probed forward until the ball was swept into Grant near the six yard box, when his twist, turn and scuffed shot—possibly deflected—wrong-footed the keeper and nestled into the bottom corner to put the Addicks ahead.

On about 60 minutes, Nathaniel Chalobah pulled up with an injury. The young Alan Mwamba was his replacement in the middle. For Preston, an unfortunate slip from Amari’i Bell provided the opportunity for them to win a corner. The ball was whipped in and dealt with but the second phase resulted in a gilt edge chance that Lang fluffed.

On eighty-six minutes, Miles Leaburn, who had run himself into the ground, was replaced by Micah Mbick. The young striker had an almost immediate impact, releasing a twenty-four yard screamer that forced the keeper to parry away for a corner. Two minutes into added time, Tyreece Campbell and Karlan Grant were replaced by Joe Rankin-Costello and Nathan Asiimwe to see the game out. And they did!

Whilst this one started slowly, it opened up in the second half and was quite enjoyable. I can see why Preston have started this season so poorly. Charlton weren’t fully comfortable throughout but Preston were limited to only one shot on target and they never really rested Okonkwo. Conor Coventry was brilliant (that reverse pass!), as were the back four. Miles Leaburn was a warrior, Tyreece Campbell caused panic every time he was on the ball and Karlan Grant took his chance well when it fell to him. In fact, he really manufactured it once he was in front of goal. His goal put Charlton, however temporarily, at the top of the table, with three out of three wins.

    After the disaster at Spurs, getting this result against a run-of-the-mill Championship team is as good a sign as beating West Ham.

    Bland and often cynical from Preston. Got what they deserved. Some of their fans very angry by the end, understandably. Quality increased from us with the subs most effective, so good to see, especially Alan Mwamba.

    Telling that TC still smiling even after NJ punched him in the head at full-time.

    League Cup, who gives a fuck, we’re Charlton Athletic, and we’re going up! 

    Not really. But what a feeling to be top of the Championship after three games. 

    Perfect start!
