Jones calls subs gamechangers, but I think today they changed the game for the worse. I also think starting Edwards was a mistake.

A solid first 15 minutes but we were pretty pants after that.

I think Mcnamara ending the game at right wing was a weird choice, and TC was clearly spent, but Alli mustn't be up to much in training if he can only get on for 3 mins at the end.

Knibbs and Kelman did nothing to keep up the pressure that we built up leading up to the big TC chance, and it felt like the game was always going to peter out after that.

A point gained but yet again were ultimately undone by an individual mistake by us rather than a glorious piece of play by the opponent
    This.

We spent all summer planning to play wingers & although we didnt manage to sign JRS we did bring in Alli and Nkeng...............but we end up in the last 20 mins relying on our rightback to attack & put crosses in.

We need to stick to our pre-season thinking & play with 2 wingers. And play with a natural striker (Kelman or Godden) - Mbick is NOT the answer.
Would you have stuck with the 4-2-3-1 then?

Even though we vastly improved when we changed to 3-5-2?
Imo yes. Mainly because we didnt plan the season with wingbacks. Like last season we havent got an effective RWB. And we improved in the 2nd half due to Mesik conjng on - and he might have improved us as part of a back 4 as well.
  • Having neither Nkeng or Apter on the bench was certainly a move

Problem is we also didn’t get the adequate players for the 4-2-3-1, a decent RW  and 10.

Would’ve taken it this morning. Same old we look shakey at the back with 4 at the back and look toothless going forward with 3 at the back. Edwards looking sooo rusty and very league one, have a feeling it will take him a long time to get back to the level he was at.
Don't make me laugh, it's his first game back in best part of a year, give the lad a chance eh,...
Got nothing to do with giving a chance, it’s commenting on the match you watch.

He is so far off the pace it’s incredible he was put in to start. He looked rusty in his cameo at Cardiff and was well off it today. He hasn’t got match sharpness and was blowing out his arse from about 25 mins. He looks about 4 U21 games short of match fitness still.

No one is writing him off or not giving a chance, but he should not have been starting today.
    Different subject altogether...🤷‍♂️

It’s a good point, considering that nine times out of ten the referee sends off our goalkeeper and we lose this game comfortably.

Why? High chance they wouldn't have come on.

    Frustrating day.

Frustrating that after starting well and taking an early lead we didn't score again, allowing City back into the game.

After they worked out our 442,  Bristol were well on top, probably should have had a pen and red card for Arthur before getting a locked on pen.

2nd half City were still all over us until some very early subs.

The game see-sawed between us being on top and then City but we had the better chances, their keeper making a good save from TC, who should have netted the rebound, and a great save from Knibbs.

Probably a draw was fair but we could have nicked it.

Our football, especially our two centre mids, was often pedestrian. How we miss Chalobah!

Twine and City looked much slicker and will wonder how they didn't win.

Good to see Billy K, Ramsay and Bell back.

Mbick still has a lot of development to do and Edwards needs more games to get fully match fit, at least I hope that is all it is.

Still unbeaten at home but a long time since we won a game.

Great to be back at the Valley. Some of our fans have become quite dramatic and entitled it seems to me, comments like "Charlton returning has ruined my weekend already" or "I can't get excited for today" showcase that.

Great to see Koumetio back, who was probably man of the match. Did we really need to start Mbick and Edwards ahead of Kelman and Mesik? I've not seen Mbick run full speed yet, which tells me he's concerned about his body in competitive games.

Our central midfield gave last season vibes again. The physical midfielders we brought in aren't available for one reason or another (Chalobah and Ouma), and the progressive passing from CM wasn't Championship level.

Without a clear number 10 or right-sided forward, we've got into the habit of changing the team or formation, hoping it will click. Some excellent forward play from Leaburn again today, just a shame his teammates are so far away from him at times.

Happy with the point and will ignore the recent form table!

I think that's a good point. Bristol City are a decent side and we coped with them well. The defensive issues were personal, not structural which is an improvement and Billy looked fairly imperious. We started really well, we need to start making those periods count more. The midfield was freed up by the switch to a back 3 and I think Carey might have thrived with the space created. Taking Leaburn off was a mistake, we lost the out ball and became a lot less effective.

At the end of the day it's a point against an established Championship team whose aims will be a lot higher than ours. I'll take it

Koumetio was superb great to have him back. Ramsay also looked good when he came on. That was turgid as fuck overall though

Think I was just expecting a bit more in terms of our play style. We don’t seem to be able to take control of games for extended periods of time. We play like we’re an away team
Because we are very poor in possession. We cannot string any passes together outside of the sideways / backwards ‘U’ without giving the ball away cheaply.

So many times we literally can’t make a straight forward pass. Virtually every player guilty of it

Not sure what to make of that.

You could say it’s a decent point but we need games we target for a win, and if that isn’t one, then what is?

We are just missing quality at key moments, and having far too many brain farts every game. Arthur should have been sent off, and I lost count of the number of simple errors or wrong decisions we made. Just a real lack of intelligence.

So many times there is a clear an obvious pass on and we don’t see it or go the other way.

Echo most of the other points re Edwards being miles off and I still need to see more from Mbick but a few nice touches.

Skipp is slowly starting to underwhelm me as well - lacks the pace needed to really impact the game.

Overall it’s gonna be a slog this winter and we need a big jump in quality and intelligence

Excellent point we stated very well playing a new 442 formation and scored a well taken goal through Grant .. but think City then changed their system which made it more difficult for us and they come into the game .. a pen ?? not sure seem to make slot of it and that goal gave them bit of confidence.. second half we changed systems went to 5 at the back then changed again to 3421 very even tactic game .. big chance Campbell has to do better should score , then 92 mins Knibbs free kick just going in top corner , until the keeper finger nails tipped it over so close … all in all fair point and deserved point … if you look how far we come again lost 1-2 last year and today there was nothing between us and an established championship side ..

MOM Billy , but Skipp and Coventry outstanding in mid
Your trolling is clearly rusty after the break, gone too hard too soon.

Actually started the game well. We took the lead and really needed to push for another more than we did.

We start most home games well. 10-15 minutes we regularly look sharp with a bit of verve, and as a rare treat we even got a goal to go with it today.

But we never seem to sustain it, by 20th minute the oppo are settled and more often than not, we are grateful for the half time whistle

You are missing the point. Macnamara was at right wingback, not wing. Neither Alli nor Nkeng have shown they can play in this position, where you have to defend as well as attack. The problem is neither can Macnamara, who is a defender. We switched to 5 at the back today because we were under the cosh. 4 at the back does not work because we have no effective 10.
We are now in a position where we cannot play 4 at the back effectively because we have no10, and we can't do five at the back either because we only have one wingback, Mesik.

So what is the answer ??    There must be one, or are we going to go the rest of the season switching between 2 impossible formations & grinding out draws week after week.

Quite surprised Skipp and Coventry lasted the entire game and that we didn’t see JRC or Carey on.

How far off is Chalobah? Is Mwamba injured too
    or just not fancied today?

    PWR.

One point is better than none but a crying shame TC couldn’t put one of those two attempts away in the second half. That said he was still more or less our only attacking threat.

One point nearer the 50 plus required to keep out of the bottom 3.

Like last season 21st or better will constitute success given our resources (lack) and injury record.

I thought we were poor.  We looked shaky at the back in the first half and we’re not very good on the ball. Got back into it a bit in the second half, but I think it’s going to be a long season

I’m not confident going into Tuesday night and we need to get a win soon

Not usually over critical but we wasted the ball so any times and were so negative in possession. When is Leaburn going to get some protection from refs? Overall I don’t think Nathan really knows what his best side is or the shape he wants.

Oddly it was Ramsay showing the rest how to pass forward after he came on. They didn’t always find the target, but overall his positivity was a breath of fresh air.
