When Coventry was playing for Ireland over the international break he was spraying passes like a prime Claus Jensen,  back to Charlton and reverts to his usual sideways or backwards passing
Either of two things, he’s doing what he’s told to do, or players aren’t making runs for him.
  • I would give Mwamba a go alongside Skipp..... we need somebody who can pass the ball forward before Chalobah is back.
Did you not see him second half all over the place at fault for Watford goal …. You have to stick with Skipp and Coventry cause looked what happened without them .. …. The problem not the mid but further up the pitch …. All three should be dropped on Saturday if NJ true TJ his word ….. we will play 4231 on Saturday …….
There is absolutely no way you can have watched our recent performances and decided that the midfield is not a problem.

Coventry and Skipp have started 6 games together and we haven't won any. That is not a coincidence.

Coventry is probably the most overated player at the club.
The best we played last season was when we replaced him with Coady.
Skipp and Mwamba to start against Norwich and stick with it until Chalobah is fit.

I expect Leuth to give this post a Like

Nah, I'll give it a correction though. The best we played last season was the first 1/3 of the season, when Coventry was a key part of us looking really good (as he was for the first 3 games this season). When we got Coady in we were in full survival mode and we played virtually no football at all except in a couple of games, we managed to scramble a few results but it wasn't pretty. Coventry and Chalobah looked like a wonderful midfield for 2 and a half games. Coventry and Mwamba looked fantastic for half a game, so of course we gave it 15 minutes against Watford and then gave them the entire midfield by taking Coventry off. I've never seen anyone with a higher work-rate get slagged off so much by his own fans

My problem with Coventry is he always takes the safe option.
He refuses to run forward with the ball or look for a killer pass.
Always short sideways and backwards with his passing
And I don't believe he's told not to try and be positive it's just the way he is.

I would rather have Skipp than Cov.
Skipp deep then 2 others in front, JRC and Knibbs...
  • Cov JRC and Mwamba in a three

Campbell on the left kelman down the middle and Leaburn on the right

I don't think it matters whether it's Cov & Skippy, Cov/Mwamba, Skippy/Carey or even jumping into a time machine and bringing back the likes of Kish, Jensen, the former No 7 etc.

Everyone is playing to instructions; they're following orders.

There is no flair or individuality in this team - TC is the closest we have to that.

I'm incredibly excited for Coventry to be back on the Nathan Jones shitlist (as usually happens when he has to do the whole midfield on his own for a while) except this time without a Coady to replace him with and the consequent number of chances the next few opponents of ours will create. You'll notice Watford spent the last 30 minutes creating absolutely all manner of chances against us, and that their first goal came when Coventry went to ground to win a tackle, the ball broke to theirs, and he got to run at us while Coventry was on the ground. Cue Mwamba not knowing what to do and our defence backing off until he shot. So yeah, bring on the Coventry axe. It'll accelerate the Jones sacking. Maybe we'll get a new manager who, like Ireland's boss, realises you can play the bloke so long as he has people around him who show for the fucking thing
You can’t defend that Coventry performance. He’s been mostly good this season but that was by far his worst game for a while. Mwamba came on and played more line breaking passes in about 10 minutes than Coventry and Skipp did all of the first half. Mwamba didn’t seem to have a problem with people not showing for the ball
Mwamba was much better with the ball, but worse defensively. Positionally he got caught out too much.

On Saturday Skipp was better than Coventry until the silly booking. Followed by the near second booking. He was subbed because he was likely to get sent off, not because he was the worst player out there.

It's a tough call, as none of our available midfielder conbinations are good enough to play in a 2. Maybe 4231 with Mwamba as the 10? Or Carey as the 10, but deeper then he usually is.

An argument for a Skipp-Mwamba pairing. His experience would be more helpful for talking Mwamba through the game
Is he that vocal though? He’s having trouble talking himself through games at the moment!!

I’m sure Leuth is a great guy and I agree with him on a lot but getting him to admit that his favourite player can ever play badly is impossible.

Do they call Cov & Skipp a 'double pivot' because they have the strength of two ballerinas, or because it's like watching a session of interpretative dance?

We are once again not blessed in the center of midfield and I'm not sure who you can put there to improve things. But it cannot be both of them.
Midfield has been weak since Parker and Jensen.

    Ballerinas are exceptionally strong.

    It depends on the system.

3 at the back doesnt work with a front 3. We either need to revert to the 4231 from the start of the season or revert to the 352 of last season. Neither are ideal tbh. Given our weaknesses on the wings I'd be tempted to go 352. In that case I think the CM 3 should be Cov/Skipp, Mwamba and Knibbs. Actually in a 4231 I'd do the same CM 3.

So maybe it doesnt depend on the system.

Either way the 343 has to end.

The 352/532 worked against Bristol City but didn't really work against Burnley or Watford. I'd go back to the 4231.

After Jones' comments on Saturday about sticking to the same players maybe he makes a few changes at the weekend

    Okonkwo
    Ramsay Jones Koumetio Mesík
    Costello Skipp Mwamba
    Alli Kelman Campbell

No idea if it would be better or worse, but we're in the "fling shit at the wall and see what sticks" stage of the season

Skipp and mwamba in the middle - 4-4-2

    Arthur
    Ramsey Jones Billy Ivan/Bell
    Carey Mwamba, Skipp, Campbell
    Mbick/Leaburn Kelman

back to basics, carey to pull in tight with skipp and mwamba, campbell to be effectively free to roam

I like the JRC shouts. Has been pretty solid in the middle and allows Jones to change shape in-game if he needs to with his versatility.

    I’d also drop Grant.

  • Coventry has performed well in a Charlton shirt on many occasions, Skipp to date, has not.
If Skipp were to make an early mistake, he'd get very little latitude from the home crowd.
Whoever plays in midfield is going to be under pressure to perform and will need the crowd to get behind them.
What I like about Muamba is that he appears to be able to play his natural game without fear.
So Coventry/ Muamba or Coventry/ JRC

One or the other assuming Chalobah still unfit and Ouma persona non grata.

Skipp has managed the occasional forward pass so I’d probably choose him alongside Carey at home.

Hahaha I fairly regularly get comments like this but its actually a fairly normal (outside this site) way that football sides are shown. With the Keeper in front of you and working forwards. The striker position is referred to as up front or up top!

An example from you loan watch thread:

We need 3 in the middle of midfield. Our midfield is bad enough as it is but you can’t expect them to do anything if outnumbered in there. Mwamba is a great prospect but definitely doesn’t have the discipline to play in that system

But then you'd need to bring Mcnamara back in to play RWB, and if you do that you can't play 2 wingers with a 3 man midfield too so you'd need to play 2 strikers and drop TC, or play him at LWB. And if you play 2 strikers either Leaburn or Grant come back into the side, and suddenly you're left with

    Okonkwo
    Mcnamara Ramsay Jones Koumetio Campbell
    Skipp Coventry Mwamba
    Leaburn Kelman

    And that looks horrible

You could shift Ramsay to RWB and play a 3 of Bindon - Jones - Koumetio. Bindon is more suited to a 3 than a 2 and Ramsay is better with the ball at his feet than McNamara. It isn't ideal but I do think it could be a better back 5 option

Just think any combo of 3/5 at the back is just going back to stifling our best attacker.

Jones speaks of evolution and to me that needs to be the back 4 and 2 wingers, and whether that's a flat midfield 3, a 442, or 2 defensive midfielders and a 10 is the most important question.

4-3-3 with Coventry as the DM, Mwamba and another in CM. Don’t play a 10 as we don’t have anyone who offers everything we need in the role. Means our best attacking threat in TC can play in his best position too.

Yeah this was my thinking. TC has been much less effective since we reverted back to the 3/5 at back

Yeah I agree, I just think NJ is in a cautious mode and will stick with the 5. Might even see Mesík RWB and Bell LWB
