    Pens all the way!

    Too much offensively for most other teams to cope with and a much better Defense than the last couple of years. Would still have liked Therrien to have dealt for a strong, defensively minded blueliner rather than Hossa, but am still convinced that when Sid the Kid makes it back from that ankle injury they will roll over most of the East. The only team that would really worry me is Ottawa - but I think they'll have enough in the locker to beat them this time round.

    Losing conference finalists: Senators, Ducks - The redwings will choke again, just like usual :)

    And BDL - the 'canes do have a chance - they've been on a real tear of late - but they don't have the depth for another cup run

    I have spent all DAY avoiding the result from last night (game three of the Stanley Cup finals) and just watched what was probably the best game of hockey I've seen in fifteen years. This won't mean jack to most of you, but there was a shift from Brooks Orpik halfway through the third period where he levelled four Wings in about fifteen seconds flat - that fifteen seconds summed up why I love Hockey so much and made me wish I lived in Canada where I could play beer league.

    I have to admit Leroy my interest ended when the Flames made their seemingly customary exit in the 1st round of the play-offs - it's weird that hockey, which I associate with long, dark, frozen winter nights - is still on when it's 85+ degrees outside here in Edmonton.

    Hey - I still can't get my head round hockey in Carolina, Tampa, Dallas and Sunrise!

    Seriously though, you missed an absolute classic last night - I'm staying up for Saturday's game after that. I was worried the Wings were going to outclass the Pens, but I think that win will give them some momentum.     Setanta/NASN and Channel 5. I recorded the showing from NASN (the same broadcast as the youtube vid) mainly because Nick Halling isn't exactly the most knowledgeable hockey commentator and ends up making channel 5's coverage something of a joke.

    What makes this even sweeter is that Orpik had been almost a no-show for the first two and a half games - there was a spark in the second period from him when he levelled Draper, but that shift is probably the finest example of pure hitting I've seen since I watched Scott Stevens annihilate the Flyers single-handed in around 97/98. If hockey were always like last night's game it would be the most popular sport on Earth.

    i would have tipped the penguins ages ago, honestly i detest both teams my fav team is the hawks and in the early 90's pittsburgh beat us in the finals i was gutted and the deadwings are our biggest rivals, ive been to a chicago-detroit game 20000+ amazing atmoshere. If pittsburgh dont win it this year they will next year very young team if they do win it this year malkin must prove hes at least as good as crosby.

    Mine too! Used to play when i was younger - if I'd grown up in Canada I'd have tried to make it to major junior level - the fact that the team i have followed for 25 years is in the finals this year makes it even sweeter. Can't wait for tonight's game - though I fear the intensity the Pens had in game 3 will probably slack off a bit and the deadwings will win.

    As the wife is dissapearing off to Calgary tonight to watch some film about Sex & Cities, I will tune into the Pens game in glorious HD - hockey definitely suits HD broadcasts as it's such a fast moving game. Before that though its Toronto FC - LA Galaxy in the big MLS game, also live on TV - happy days!

    What's the job market there like? (Calgary I mean). Seriously considering moving to Canada in the next three years or so - currently the Senior Systems Engineer for the UK arm of a nasdaq traded company with eight years' IT experience, so I should qualify for the entry visa without too many problems, but don't really want to live in Toronto or Vancouver. Fancy Calgary, Edmonton or Saskatoon, but not much point moving to them if the IT market is crap.

    Leroy - Alberta is seriously, seriously short of manpower so I would say the chances of getting employment are good, however I don't work in IT so not sure how that particular industry is shaping up.

    If I were you I'd leave Saskatoon off your list though, nice, pretty *little* prairie town BUT very cold winters & a bit of a one-horse town - you'd be bored within 12 months.

    Calgary has the Rocky mountains on it's doorstep, plenty of fresh air, an amazing downtown cycle network, a milder climate, hockey & a thriving cultural/entertainment/retail scene. Edmonton is more of an industrial town, but it also has good culture & hockey - I much prefer Calgary to Edmonton personally.

    http://www.calgaryjobshop.ca/home/162.htm is a good place to look - although if you are serious I would go through a specialist recruitment agency. Be prepared perhaps for lower salaries than London (but cost of living is also much lower) and less paid vacation (but more public holidays).

    Leroy - Move to Vancouver! There is a major need for good IT people here, although you would have to put up with a shitty hockey team. Why don't you fancy it btw?

    Calgary is ok but for me there is not much to do, too many urban cowboys and sprawling suburbs. Although if I lived out there, I'd do what Oakster does - Live in the beautiful rockies close enough to the city for the ameneties that you need once in while.

    I hope the pens do it tonight only if to prolong the final.

    What an incredible game last night! Detroit needed simply to win at home against Pittsburgh to take the best of seven series 4-1 & lift the Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh had other ideas & took an early 2-0 lead, only for Detroit to fight their way back to lead 3-2. With just 30 seconds left Pittsburgh scrambled an equaliser.

    Then we had two full 20 minute sudden death periods, with neither team scoring thanks to incredible goalkeeping, fluffed chances & several hit posts.

    Finally in the 3rd extra time period, the Penguins snatched a dramatic winner - the puck rebounding off the referees arse to set up the match winning shot!!

    So game 6 tomorrow night, I think the momentum has shifted & the Pittsburgh Penguins will win the series 4-3.

    Fellow hockey fans whaddya reckon??

    What a game indeed! I can't remember the last time I saw a goal of that significance (the tying goal) came so late, and so against the run of play...

    A Pittsburgh prediction still looks ambitious to me, but at least they have a shout at it, which they sure didn't after Saturday!

    I've been a zombie all day - had less than two hours' sleep before having to go to work but it was worth it. **** me - WHAT a game. When the Pens went two up I knew it was too good to be true, and was all ready to turn it off after the Deadwings scored to go 3-2 up in the third, but thought I'd stick with it - and was glad I did! After the debacle of Saturday's performance I didn't hold out much hope, but last night has given me renewed optimism. If we can get a win in game 6 then I really think the Wings might s*** themselves in their own building in game seven. The Pens badly, badly need Malkin to start playing again though - he's been gash in the finals.
