I know all about lies, damn lies, and statistics, etc., etc., but people from minority race backgrounds are far more likely to be banged up than white people are for the same crimes. Abolishing prisons obviously isn't the answer but the problem needs addressing.LuckyReds said:"Black Lives Matter UK" trying hard to out-parody themselves.
After their last stunt - laying on the runway at City Airport and taking a stand against "racist climate change" - they're now fighting for the abolishment of prisons...
Must admit, there's something peculiarly racist about their logic of viewing prison as a racial issue that predominantly effects the Black community...1 -
With you all the way on that apart from the bit about degrees. Whilst it may not be necessary to have every copper educated to bachelor level, my limited interaction with plod has shown me that too many are stupid and ignorant. Having an educated police force has got to be the way to go.LuckyReds said:Whilst we're on the topic of prisons: G4S and Serco. We've touched on it before in this thread but.. fuck me:
Guess what happens when you privatise something as specialist as a prison, and make highly skilled members of staff redudant? Replacing them with inexperienced young chaps who are in it for the cash, and very little cash at that. (Coming from a Serco PO I spoke with recently.)
How about when you select a company to carry out this specialised service, when they've previously managed to fuck up an occasion as big as The Olympics?
Ultimately, that prison looks to be out of action for quite a while to say the least, and changing all the locks alone will apparently cost somewhere in the region of £500,000.. add in equipment, structural damage, compensation claims and legal costs..
Then consider the fact that the Prison Service proper and The Police - not G4S - had to deal with the consequences and fix it. Then consider the fact that G4S probably have no responsibility over the property - just the service of staffing it.
G4S are an absolute joke, and it's clear that their shareholders are the real winners here - literally every other poor bastard involved is getting shafted, be they a con, an officer, or a loved one - but that's not the real issue here.
The real issue here is that someone, somewhere, believes this is an absolutely acceptable state of affairs, and thinks G4S and Serco should be running prisons. Presumably the same cretin who advises on MoJ cuts and policy, the kind of cuts and policies that saw this prison running at 134% capacity in November apparently.
Probably the same level of dickhead who has decided every Police Officer needs a degree.1 -

The complete nobodies nominated for Sports Personality of the Year. I don't know 90% of them. Quite frankly, Nicky Ajose is more of a personality than 90% of them.
Being a good hockey player is quite easy - very little competition.
Being Nicky Ajose means you've beat off 99.9% of footballers who gave it a go and didn't make it.3 -
I will not be voting for Nicky Ajose anytime soon. Unless he scores at Millwall on Wednesday.0

My experience interviewing graduates in the workplace has pretty much underlined that a degree means very little nowadays though; at least in computing.AddicksAddict said:

I completely agree with the need for an educated police force though, and we're probably in agreement that a bachelors degree isn't the best match for the skills required in policing. They brought in the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing a few years ago, which should've gone some way of alleviating this to be fair... but it clearly hasn't, and from what I gather it was pretty easy to attain.
Perhaps some type of on-the-job apprenticeship style framework that has to be completed during their probationary period, but in all honesty I can't help but think that should simply be part of the training. When you have new police officers joining after doing 9-5 courses over a couple of months, compared to longer (residential) courses a few years ago - it's clear to see that some compromises on the quality of instruction must've been made.0 -
Some ASLEF/RMT chap on BBC News, who genuinely thinks that commuters are behind Southern Rail.
He was asked point blank, in black and white terms, and he said "absolutely". Deluded f*ck.1 -

Apologies for the late comment on this but I'd just like to say this is arguably my favourite non-Charlton related post all year.

If you have never heard of Gareth Bale, Jamie Vardy, Mo Farrah, Andy Murray, Alistair Brownlee, Laura Kenny, Nick Skelton and Nicola Adams (Who represent 50% of the nominees) then I suggest you are not much of a sport fan, and therefore not the demographic the SPOTY people are looking to entertain anyway? No hot water or heating since last night. First engineer was due to arrive by lunchtime but he cancelled at noon as he had more important things to do. Rung around until I finally found one who had a spot free this afternoon. He just cancelled too. Totally criminal way of running a business. Doubt I'll get a discount as fuckwit compensation.1

Colleagues and customers who write "Happy Friday!" or "Happy Hump-Day!" in emails.
I don't know when this crept in and became a 'thing' but it's very irritating and especially, I'm ashamed to say, when I write it back to them to keep them sweet. Bleurrrggh.
