For those interested in local cricket, Kent's Calum Hagget made his debut for Blackheath on Saturday. We also have Daniel Bell-Drummond and Ivan Thomas who are also both on the Kent staff at Blackheath this season. West Indian Test player Kirk Edwards has played this season but is soon off to join the WI A-team. The 1st XI, after a poor first game, have since had good wins against Sevenoaks and Bromley. So if you want to see some good quality club cricket locally, pop up to the Rectory Field on a Saturday.
Always find it strange letting them play for a club side. Remember my old mucker Min Patel getting injured playing for Bexley.
My nephew who is a MCC Young Cricketer also plays for a club side Fives and Heronians.
Min is still at Bexley but I believe was absent through injury at the weekend and my 10 year old is currently having 1-2-1 sessions with him. Also at Bexley, in the same top tier as Blackheath, are Kent's Adam Ball and Adam Riley plus the Australian U19 opening bat and wicket keeper, Jimmy Peirson.
A terrific morning for Kent who took five wickets though were slightly thwarted by an unbroken last wicket stand of 26 going into the interval. I was late arriving because of parking problems and missed the first twenty minutes. But by all accounts I missed little. Stevens took the first wicket of the morning when Harmison took a terrific catch at gully to get rid of Thakor for 30. It was really was good because my initial thought was it was going to bounce in front of him, but he snaffled it to his right and slightly in front of him. 111-5. Thakor had looked a class player. Not so Boyce I thought, and shortly afterwards Boyce edged Haggett low through the slips for 4. Next ball, Boyce appeared to be trying to leave one, it caught his bat or glove, and bowled him. Good bowling. 117-6. In Haggett’s next over, Naik drove wildly straight to Riley who was now at gully, and Riley put it down. It was travelling fast but was still a relatively straightforward chance. In the next over, Cobb was lbw to Stevens for 2, attempting an expansive straight drive. Cobb has scored centuries opening in his last two yb40 games but looked poor here. 123-7. Soon afterwards, Haggett induced an edge from Freckingham which flew just past the hand of Coles at second slip and away for four. There was no third slip and in Haggett’s next over, Kent paid the price again as Freckingham edged straight to where third slip would have been. Excellent bowling from Haggett. Not such great field-setting in my opinion. Matt Coles got his first bowl of the morning at 12.35, which says something about his position in the pecking order amongst the Kent seamers. Jones put three men of the boundary for Coles. Shreck replaced Stevens at the railway end and Naik soon chopped the ball just past his leg stump. Two balls later, Freckingham edged straight to where third slip would have been. Great bowling. Again question marks against the field placing. Coles was straight driven for a couple of fours. Coles dropped one short and Naik pulled him for four more. Perhaps it was a trap with two men on the legside boundary. If it was, it didn’t work. In the next over, Freckingham completely miscued at Shreck and the ball lobbed up off a leading edge, and Bell-Drummond did superbly to dive forward and catch it millimetres off the ground. 155-8. Later in the same over, Naik edged Shreck, and Harmison at gully had to dive to his left and got a hand on it but couldn’t hold on. Coles induced his first edge in the next over when Naik edged past Harmison at gully at catchable height. In the next over, Shreck induced an edge from Naik, straight to Coles who took a great catch diving to his right at second slip, for 23. 160-9. Coles was removed from the attack at the pavilion end and Stevens changed ends. The last pair had added 26 by the time a late lunch was taken.
Watching Key, Nash and Stevens bat so superbly over the last few days was splendid entertainment, and made you wonder why Kent are bottom of the County Championship.
Then it came to trying to bowl Leics out in their second innings and you realised why they're bottom.
There is no firepower in their bowling and they took just one wicket in two sessions.
You have to take 20 wkts to win a County Championship match. In six games so far, Kent have taken a grand total of 66 wkts, and the most they've taken in a game is the 15 against Essex last week. Hard to see them recording a win all season with their current toothless bowling ''attack''.

I went along today. Nice afternoon and CAMRA beer tent
The bowling was the real problem, no penetration at all, and very inexperienced (apart from Stevens). Great knock by Alex Wakely for Northants.

Kent’s morning.
Planning to go on Sunday for the 40 over match and might be taking our eldest grandson for his first cricket experience.

Not looking good yet again (Hants 455, Kent 149-4) but congratulations to Charlton fan Adam Riley for his best figures of 7-150.
Hampshire 1st Innings
455 all out (145.4 overs)
Kent 1st Innings
321 for 7 declared (88.3 overs)
Hampshire 2nd Innings
98 for 3 (25.0 overs)
Coles appears to have been dropped for the Durham loanee Claydon.
Anything to read into that I wonder?
He could simply be injured of course but I've not read that he is anywhere.
