    And then what comes next?
  • There is an endless list, and it often depends on the situation when you hear the song, however a few are:

When the Welsh crowd sing their national song before the rugby.

Man of the World, Fleetwood Mac

    Love Me Tender, Elvis

    Communication Breakdown, LedZep (pretty thrilling)

Heart Like a Wheel, Kate and Anna

Lover You Should Have Come Over, Jeff Buckley

Someone Like You, Adele (presently done to death, but really moving)
  • Let 'em come (piped stadium version)
  • The End - The Doors

The opening riff does it for me.
  • Nobodies Heroes - Stiff Little Fingers
(Reminds me of time in NI) we lost two very young lads.
A British Soldier(A true story of a Soldier who gave his life to protect the people that hated him)
England Belongs To Me- Cock Sparrer live at Wasted Morecambe cos it reminds me of my Bruv.
    Everybody Hurts- Rem very deep.

  • Dolphins - Tim Buckley (Jeff's Dad).

His (original) version of Song to the Siren also hits the mark.
  • This one gets me every time. Just listen to the words.

Aloe Blacc Mama hold my hand
  • Decades - Joy Division

  • Some great songs and even just looking at the first few posts, Build and Careless Whisper are two that I'd agree with.

Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon

is one I'd like to add

What is the magic formula? Chord progression, lyrics, delivery, personal reasons (time/place)?

    Amazing what music can do!
  • You'll never leave Harlan alive - Patty Loveless
  • My Immortal - Evernesence
  • England - Angelic Upstarts
  • Sebastian - Cockney Rebel
  • Thousands Are Sailing - The Pogues
  • Zombie - The Cranberries
  • Stay Free - The Clash
  • In a Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson

  • Animal Nitrate - Suede
  • Welcome to the Black Parade - My Chemical Romance

Belong (Live at Mountain Stage) by REM
World Leader Pretend (live at Mountain Stage) by REM
    Lose Control by Ash
Fall On Me by REM (specifically the bridge section with Mike Mills' harmonies)

Pretty much any time Mile Mills sings now I think about it.

Great choices. I would add to that Find the River and Sad Professor.
  • Pearl fishers duet.
  • Apache - The Shadows
Johnny Remember Me - John Leyton
    Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan
Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie
See Emily Play - Pink Floyd - Aah, beautiful, tortured Syd with a classic slice of psychedelic pop
I am the Walrus - The Beatles - you could pick any one of a hundred Beatle songs, but John's psychedelic rant against authority took pop music to a new level and I prefer it anyday it to Imagine which has become his accepted signature tune to the establishment that used to despise him
Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones - Awesome portentous intro, stonking performance by the band and how the hell does Merry Clayton manage to scream in tune
For Emily whenever I may find her - Simon and Garfunkal (live in '69 version)- Isn't it great to be in love...
Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell - ...except if you're Joni, when being in love is never easy
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys - They used to say that this was 10 years ahead of it's time, but it's totally timeless. Awesome construction of musical fragments into a staggering whole. Brian Wilson really is a genius.
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks - The greatest record of all time IMHO
  • Going Under - Devo
    Scheherezade - Rimski Korsakov
specifically the finale, but the whole thing is great.
  • Is this a thread to list songs that make the hairs on ones neck stand up, or a thread to list the most obscure songs possible? Ffs

Music snobs are second only to wine snobs in their annoyingness !

(some good songs listed here though).

Gimme Shelter stands out like a ray of sunshine in a dark sky - good call.

The "today I will be listening to" thread definitely seemed to be for obscure songs. That's partly why I got this thread going again.
Still, some cracking choices amongst them. Keep them coming. I've researched a few, but some Lifers are certainly showing their age including me.
That said, J J Cale Don't Cry Sister is an obscure 1979 classic.
10 years after I was born, but I was introduced to Cale in the early 90s when I started listening to Eric Clapton. Clapton covered one of his songs and I learned about the connection.
I would recommend anyone checking out J J especially if you want to chill out.
