The Governor of Bank of England is reported as saying privately to an economist, David Hale, that whoever is in power after the election will have to make such savage cuts that they'll subsequently be out of office for a generation.
It is certainly a poisoned chalice for the next UK govt - though the widening fissures between the "Euro-economies" could have calamitous consequences for many governments on the Continent such that the nature of the political debate thoughout the EU, including at Westminster, could change radically over the next few years.

What's coming up in the next ten years will make the seventies look like a tea party. What cracks me up about Cameron and the tories is that their economic policy is so shite and full of holes you could drive a tank through it and not hit substance with either side. Labour are just as gash - made even more so by the fact they're not even pretending to be socialist now and haven't been for fifteen years - leaving people with NO choice about the country's political direction in what will be by far the worst period of public service cuts in history. Lib Dems are an utter joke fullstop. I'm not voting - it doesn't make a blind bit of difference who gets in, the country's fucked any way you look at it.
and don't worry when oil starts to get scarce soon as consumption is shortly going to exceed supply, we will no doubt have WWIII - West vs East - so will be far more important things to worry about than public services
Thatcher would certainly have struggled to win the '83 election without the Falklands and Labour making itself unelectable.
Events dear boy, events.
Nonetheless, I suspect that Cameron's private thoughts are not that dissimilar to Mervyn King's but he can't choose his timing - it's now or never for him. Clegg has the single objective of securing PR, in which case the Lib Dems assure themslves of a permanent voice and Brown just wants someome to love him.

In the states he is derided by the radical right as a "socialist" despite all his policies being less socialist than any of our three main parties.
I'm still unsure.
Dislike Brown and Labour.
Cameron doesn't impress and I'm not a tory
Clegg and some of the Lib-dems policies seem OK but how many of them would actually be introduced.
UKIP I don't agree with.
BNP are just the same old racists in suits and will never get my vote.
I'm going to vote for this Hanging Party as I think it's about time someone looked out for the well hung.
......At least in the bad old days you could sell your vote in 'Rotten boroughs'..... and they do not come much more 'rotten' than Old Bexley with Messrs Conway eh!
Not seen much Of 'Rick' around these parts.....! but did send an email to wish him well.....

Thats worrying Leroy if you're not voting... i was lookin to you for guidance! :-)
That IS guidance Curb_It - Don't Vote!
Don't Vote is not an option in my opinion although in a free democracy everybody has the right to do as they choose.
All I would say is if you feel disenfranchised by the big 3 parties don't vote for them. Vote for a smaller party instead. If you still feel disenfranchised after considering the smaller parties then spoil your ballot paper. Don't do nothing though.
It's chicken and egg for getting political change. All the time people adopt the attitude that they will vote for a pig in a red rosette or a blue rosette because "that's what I've always done and my parents before me" nothing will change.
The big 3 parties are not representing the majority of people in this country. How many people will vote for the big 3 for positive reasons? Very few I'd wager. If they do vote for one of the big 3 it is because they want to keep another one out. Not because they believe in what they stand for.
Grasp the nettle and vote for a smaller party. If you cannot do that then spoil your paper.
Millions of small party votes and/or spoiled papers might, just might make a difference to the attitude of the political establishment to ordinary people.
Gordon Brown showed what politicians think of ordinary working class people and before I'm accused of having a go at him Cameron and Clegg have both called those that legitimately question the role of the UK within the EU fruitcakes, nutters and closet racists.
These people are arrogant to ignore the decent hardworking people of this country. Get out there and teach them a lesson on 6 May.
If anyone is watching the debate now and still doesn't think that the lib dems are a joke, then god help us. Only one man on that stage has a slight understanding of what to do, but won't go ahead with it as it'll be unpopular and lead to uproar and getting kicked out of government.
Spot on JT, clegg knows nothing, keeps tripping up on his words and looks weak. You wouldn't be a labour supporter hoping the lib dems will prop you up when your own vote collapses would you nolly?

Keep digging Gordon....

Oh, no what has GB done to her now?

Presumably he has his phone off the hook in case the men in the bunker call to arrange a supportive visit from Gordy
