Why do we regard a single event which causes mass fatalities differently from multiplle events which cause even greater numbers of fatalities over a period? Hungerford, Dunblane and Cumbria have led to 43 deaths from 3 mad gunmen in 23 years, that's roughly 2 people a year. Each year there are around 30,000 to 40,000 fatal/serious road accidents. Not at all trying to minimise the Cumbria tragedy and the genuine local grief, but when I hear the calls for new gun laws and aimless calls for "something to be done", I just wonder why the same people aren't calling for similar controls on owning a car. Is it worse being part of group killing? Are some ways of being killed less bad than others? For the bereaved families there is no difference I am sure.
