I dont see why we have to have any of the foreign players on ENGLISH tv...........surely we have enough ex players or managers that could bring the same "insight" to the game.

If its Holland playing whats the problem with having insight from Seedorf?..or from Viera if its France?
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]And Slovakia are not some footballing non-entity. They reached two finals in their old form.
Correct me if im wrong Henry, but would the main footballing body of Czechoslovakia become Czech Republic?....would it not be like comparing FYR Macedonia to Yugoslavia?
Not really. Yugoslavia split (see what I did there) into 8 or 9 countries. Czechoslovakia into only two. The Slovak part had about 40% of the population IIRC. Regardless it is still a history and Yugoslavia was mentioned in relation to Serbia at this WC.

I agree and Adebayour for African games nothing wrong with that i dont think gives us all a different angle on things
The one that has annoyed me most is Desailly talking about Ghana as if he's an ardent supporter. Yes he was born there, but he chose to play for France over them! Hardly the actions of the dedicated patriot!

I agree. Bin Hansen and Lawrenson.
Nice Henners.
Golfie, I'll tell you why we the foreign players are on there. Our "English" pundits only watch English football, how does that make them qualified to comment on a world tournament? For example take the Italy game the other night, Hansen doing his usual thing of criticising defenders
[cite]Hansen[/cite]Why was De Rossi, an attacking player, back there defending trying to head the ball?
[cite]Seedorf[/cite]He is actually very good in the air
This just identifies the lack of world football knowledge the majority of our TV pundits show, shocking lack of research or even a willingness to learn something
Adebayor seemed quite intelligent tonight. I say "seemed" because I could only go by the tone of his voice - couldn't understand a bleedin word he was saying because of his accent and the speed at which he was talking. Had to check I wasn't watching some foreign channel at one point.
the czechoslovakia team that won the euros all those years back was made up of mainly slovaks, like henry said hardly a non entity, gets quite boring the love in with the usual suspects, lineker needs to man up and stop grovelling round this "character" maradona.
[cite]Posted By: Valley11[/cite]Danny Baker's 5 minute cameo shows how wooden and cliche the rest are
I like his 'England are not good enough yet to go out' theory. I kind of get what he means. I'm going to try really hard this year not to believe we can do it whatever happens.
Fortunately we have pretty good HD coverage here on the CBC in Canada, English commentators & decent punditry. I can only imagine the rubbish you lot are putting up with from the likes of Shearer, Hansen etc
Thought the beginning of the segment with Shearer visiting a township, shown after the Mexico/France game tonight, summed him up as a pundit really. They introduced him to a guy who had survived apartheid, seen all the shit that it had to offer, suffered through it for sixty years, and what was Shearer's opening line? "So, you lived through segregation - what was that like?" I turned off after that gem.
Ok, Baker might have dished out a couple of stereotypes - but you can't say he was wooden. His passion livened the place up a bit. Then back to Linekar for one of his terrible, scripted sign off jokes.
I have coverage from Malaysia. The pundits are a couple of ex-Malaysian internationals plus Tony Cottee. Cottee is OK and they were pretty critical of England's opening performance. At least it's in English.

The stereotypes made him look a bit stupid, to be honest. Germany haven't been 'efficient' or 'defensive' for the last 8 years, and Spain won the last major tournament. Even if Spain hadn't won the European Championships, the idea of laughing at another big country for being hyped up but doing nothing in every tournament since the mid-60s is ridiculous.
He had passion, and he was entertaining in the small cameo, but then I think most fans would've had that. Even Chiles might be able to look passionate and entertaining in a ten-minute spot
Sorry, correction to the above post. Germany weren't efficient in 2002, they were just dull, defensive and lucky (with the draw). To think of the last time they were 'efficient' would bring you back maybe as far as 1996.
I understand that, Valley11, but I think he would grate if he was the presenter every day. As it was, he was a breath of fresh air and could be enthusiastic without it being pointless and annoying. That said, I don't listen to his radio show, maybe he would be able to continue in the same vein without it grating on me and others.
Comments
Him and John Champion are the ESPN duo for Prem matches, can't stand listening to either of them

Here in the US , we have the likes of (Jurgen Klinsman, Shaun Bartlett, Steve McManaman, and Roberto Martinez so far)
- i have enjoyed them all so far

Is it really as bad as this article makes out?
You mean the way he talked about German efficiency and defensive approach and how Spain are chokers?

It was embarrassing when Baker was trying to explain to them the mechanics of goal difference.........what a stain.
