I think Capello has picked the wrong captain. Not that his team mates need motivation in a WC but Gerrards permanently grimacing face is hardly inspirational and he doesn't appear to have the same leadership qualities as Terry. Give the armband back to JT.
I'm not sure getting to the semi finals or even quarter finals is failure.. you would also need to compare it with the players who were actually available at the time, and the injury problems, plus who else you got in the group.
in my viewHoddle Venables and Sven were all sucessful England Managers, I also think failing to qualify however is definitely failure
I'm really not sure how to call the situation with Capello, I guess things like his lack of national managment could be an issue, althought he qualified well. Injuries haven't helped, although maybe these highlight that we haven't really got a beckham replcement.
I have no issue with what Terry said or how he said it, i do have issue with the medium he chose to get his opinion out, I have no sympathy with a group of people staying in a 5* complex who have been on safari played Golf go swimming relax in a massive sports complex gym and Snooker room, Surrounded by fine dining, maseurs, and sports equipment.
It sounds like torture to be honest
Why cant he raise his opinion in private to the manager
Get his pals together and say listen Mr Cappello in my opinion is wrong and we need to not let this oportunity to pass us by. we need to step up and get on with this now as Weds is our last chance
Part of the reason that Terry's attempt to roll Capello failed is that the non-Chelsea players in the squad really can't stand him and probably would not accept him being reinstated.
Lampard is asked if the England players have too much time to kill between matches. He says: “We do have a lot of time to kill. But that is tournament football. Everyone has their own entertainment whether that is DVDs in their room, some people get out and socialise. Each to their own.”

11.19am: Lampard adds: “We all respect Fabio very much and we have faith in him.”
Lampard is asked is he knows the team yet: “No (he smiles).”
11.17am: Lampard is asked if Capello is to blame or if he should stand down if England fail to qualify for the knockout stages: “It is not about singling anyone out whether that is the manager or players. I have really enjoyed working with him and yes I would like him to stay. I have worked with some fantastic managers and Fabio Capello is right up there to stay.”
11.14am: Lampard continues: “There are no factions or splits in the squad and the importance of yesterday’s meeting is being overplayed. The manager just spoke about the Algeria game as he had to do.”
11.12am: Lampard adds: “We want to make the nation proud and go much further in this tournament. The players need to look at themselves now and look around ourselves at the tournament. The South American teams have been fantastic but apart from that there are a few big, big teams having similar problems.”
11.11am: Lampard is off and running. When asked about yesterday’s meeting, he says: “I don’t think anyone wants to give too much away they are in-house things and not something we are going to discuss in public. The manager spoke, we watched the Algeria game and we and the manager addressed it. It wasn’t a crisis meeting but by the same token that the manager and Franco Baldini have always been very approachable.”
[cite]Posted By: Ormiston Addick[/cite]Lampard doesn't play well for England but he seems a very decent bloke, very intelligent and goes beyond the cliches.
Probably because he comes from a decent family and went to a decent school.
Seen one or two of you saying that Capello is too strict and he should loosen up a bit to make the players respect/like him a bit more.....Jeezuz H Christ.....he has nothing and I DO MEAN NOTHING on Sir Alf Ramsey, now THAT WAS discipline....that guy could literaly pin you against the wall with a stare.
If the players are saying this (though we can only speculate at present), then all I can say is..........."Ah,the poor little lambs."
[cite]Posted By: Goonerhater[/cite]The media will never really give the players grief or tell it like it is -- they may loose their passes to Chelski--Moan Utd --Liverpool.
If capello is to balme how does this affect Rooneys ability to control a football ?
If they are bored i suggest they count their huge wads of cash for a few days.
Capleeo said he will only play players on form (Heskey etc etc etc etc) so if thats the case we will field a team of 3 players on Wednesday.
I'm with Curb_It on this one...they do have leisure facilities in the complex, pool, snooker, 9 hole golf course, darts, table tennis, a swimming pool, and no doubt in their rooms they all have laptops with wireless access, or at least access to a laptop with internet, probably top of the range HD TV's in their LUXURY rooms with full satellite TV packages (Terry said in the press conference he watched England fans comments on SKY sports), no doubt a DVD collection, books, we know the FA shipped out loads of lads mags such as NUTS/Esquire, FHM etc.
[cite]Posted By: ken from bexley[/cite]stuck in a room for 5 hours almost everyday for over 2 weeks. Cant be great can it?
Try 2 weeks at Butlins....... or any other holiday caravan park, and that is most peoples idea of a 'holiday'....... back on planet earth!
On a holiday though you're usually with your family/partner and you can get drunk every day/night.
Whilst i agree that the facilities will be second to none and very relaxing, i'm sure if we had to do the same thing day in, day out for a month or more it'd get boring. I've certainly been bored towards the end of 2 week holidays before.
perhaps diversions would have taken their minds off the game, I think Capello's approach isn't right for a tournament - after all he has no experience of them does he?
Capello firstly picked Gerrard in the middle where successive manangers have found he doesn't gel with Lampard, then he picks him wide left where he has played poorly when played there - but he has made him captain so he has to play him somewhere. A special mention to the FA who had a delivery of the new balls back in February, but they vanished before the squad has a chance to practise with them.
It is interesting the people equate the players attitude to lack fo respect for the manager as watching that on friday brought back memories of our carling cup debacle again Wycombe a few years ago.
Would Jensen Button win a Grand Prix in a Mini Cooper...?
Would Nadal win Wimbledon with a table tennis bat...?
No...!!!
It's the same for Cappello, unless he can get the England players to raise the intellectual element of their game Capello's intellect and experience is wasted...
In some respects I think Capello might as well bang his head off a brick wall because it is clear some of the players don't appear to be able to follow his 'complicated' strategy...
It's a kind of silk purses and pig's ear type of syndrome...
Let's all round on the manager because we are playing so poorly, of course it's the manager's fault! The players are doing a France and trying to gang up on the manager because they are not playing too well. Total bollocks! That was the same team that got us through the qualifiers. They can't play footy because they now realise that other nations have fit and stronger players that can close them up fast. Because our players have no techincal ability (accept Cole) they can't play themselves out of tight situations (although they should be able to including our goalkeeper being paid £100K + per week). They play with fear because they have no ability...simple! In my view we need to drop Lampard otherwise we will continue to play poorly as clearly the current team set up is to accomodate him. We need somebody with some skill and ability to take control of a game (as Gazza used to...and remember Barnes against the Argies), that's the only way our £100K+ per week players will get any confidence, they need to rely on somebody who can player footy well. Hopefully, we might see one our players pass a ball correctly, oh, and as a real bonus we might see more than 3 passes strung together. Then we can all celebrate our three consecutive passes.
Comments
the Liverpool team is his team and he responds to it
England is different - there are other so-called 'marquee' players and Gerard seems to go into his shell around them
Shell or shell suit?

Ashley Cole must love it, imagine how many photos he's sent to various women in the past few weeks!

Or even a job in a call centre of security guard or a toll booth operative for the QE2 Bridge etc
Surely if they are bored in a room they should relish the time out of captivity on the pitch?
Little boy mentality on boredom. Can Capello provide colouring books?

100% spot on...especially your comment re Rooney.
......and right on cue they go 1-0 down!!!!!
To be fair apart from France, i think almost every side has looked better than us.
Bored.......my arse!
