Heskey announced his international retirement himself? What's the problem?
  • Options
Beckham's no where near the level of being the best player of this generation.
  • Options
    And who cares?

Its not like having him about the place in SA made a blind bit of difference.

Fabio's the manager, Beckham's a grown up. Deal with it !

To be fair I wouldnt like to be retired over a TV interview.

May not have been the best player of his Generation but he is without doubt the most Popular England player with the fans possibly of all time let alone this generation.

Fabio's Italian. They do things a bit differently.

Oh good. So we have another reason to get on Fabio's back so he buggers off & we have to start all over again.

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter that much?

Beckham knows what the fans think, does it really make that much difference if he did'nt get a telegram from the Queen????

not as popular as Beckham, I agree with Ketman.

Whilst it doesn't really matter and he probably knew his time was up, maybe just a phone call from Capello would've been a nice touch rather than hearing about it like that!!

Not sure if you two jokers are actually serious or not Gazza, Bobby Moore & Chrissy Powell as popular with the the England Fans as Beckham none come even close, they maybe better players but in the popularity stakes no-one even comes close.

For all we know Capello HAS already spoken to Beckham and last night was just the first time it was announced publically.
  • Options
If you read the quote Cappello says they tried to get hold of Beckham but couldn't. so the question should be what was Beckham doing that was more important than taking a call from the England Manager days before an international. And he also states he will play Beckham in a friendly. What more can he do?
  • Options
I think what became more apparent last night is the language barrier. That interview ITV showed before the game was just strange. Capello seems to just respond to a question with any old random answer. If thats in an Interview, whats he slike expressing his views in a changing room!!

In terms of the Beckham thing, we dont now for sure whats happened. If Capello didnt call Beckham, then id be suprised....thought he would have more class than that.
  • Options
One of the things I like about Beckham is that he has made it clear that he would never call time on his international career - as long as he is a player any England manager would know that he would respond to the call. There is more than a 50/50 chance that he will never again be fit enough long enough to make it to another tournament. Given that, I do find it strange that Capello chose to make those comments.
  • Options
To be fair Capello was asked a direct question and answered it honestly, perhaps he could have been a bit less direct. Has he phoned David James and others to tell them they are no longer in his plans? There's talk of Beckham getting a farewell appearance in a friendly. I don't think that's right, friendlies should be used to build for the next competitive matches.

We always want it both ways. I remember the storm when Liniker (I think it was) wasn't allowed a fairwell game.

surely he deserves a final 20 mins at Wembley to say thanks and bye, you can't brackett Beckham with David James !!!!

I think if you are asking me if I was being serious, I would ask you to ask yourself if you were being serious about asking me if I was serious? For asking back if I was serious, was I being serious for asking if you were serious for asking me in the first place if I were serious? Were you serious? Was I serious? Is anyone serious? Hmmm, a circle has evolved, I'm confused, now let me think...

    My thoughts:

    1. I think some posters are confusing being popular with the supporters with being popular with the media. Two different things, although of course the second influences greatly the other.
    2. He is just a player coming to the end of his career who has won nothing, that's nothing in case you missed it, with that particular team. This should not automatically entitle him to some sort of farewell game arrange in his honour when we are looking to sort ourselves out.
    3. He has never even been the best player in any of the proper teams he has played for, let along the best player of his generation.

And I think A LOT of England supporters will agree with that, me included and everyone I know actually. Beckham smeckham!

I have been going to England games regularly since Mike Duxbury trod on the ball & let the Russian in to score in 1984, I can tell you bar none that Beckham is THE most popular England player with the fans since then including Gazza. Not saying he is the best far from it, I am talking about poularity with the fans.

Not sure that Becks has much of an International playing career, but I feel he is the best ambassador of English football that we have, currently still playing.

His mistake was going to the USA, so early like George Best.

He is world renown, and an ex captain. Is more than comfotable in dealing with the media, for more so than the great majority of football people, and will play what i think is a pivotal role if we get awarded the next world cup!

He is a brand, a world class brand, that is known in the USA. Personnal jealousy aside, who else is there from the UK!

We need to maximise on people like becks, and I am sure he is more than happy to assist the UK, wether it be the troops, or the awarding of the world cup or things like the Olympic games.

Why people get so uptight with Becks I have no idea!..... We have a shed load of chavvey, overpaid, mumbling, uneducated, overrated players, that are only concerned with how much they can piss away on the night club floor, with half his talent.

As for finding out about this from the media, well would you like to read in the media that you are no longer wanted!....... On a footballing level I still think he is one of the best crosses of the ball.

In a age when Wes Brown and his kind inform us that he is finishing his International career, thank god someone still wants to play for England, and is prepared to earn the shirt. Capello made a PR blunder here I am afraid, that he is already trying to 'clarify' ....

I got sick and tired of the way, especially the new Wembley crowd treated Beckham like a pop star even when he was on the bench
  • Options
love him or loathe him, he's the most famous footballer on the planet....and I agree with Ken, he's STILL the best crosser of a ball and dead ball specialist we have!

    Tabloid press make me laugh

Beckham is exactly the sort of player we should be dumping, along with Lampard and a few others that got picked for the latest squad.

Ok slightly insensitive doing it on the box put I am pretty sure Becks knew this anyway.
