Pity, could have got you a good deal from my mate Danny The Turk.....

[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]Can you run remote desktop i.e for work (deciding this or a lap top)
    Yes.
oh very nice I am an apple fan boy so I'm really tempted!
  • Complete and utter waste of money. However, good luck to all of you Appletards buying any of their overpriced tat - decided a few months back that there seems to be no end to the number of people who have drunk the kool-aid and bought a load of crApple stock - anyone buying a crapPad keeps my shares rising.

Right decision mate. Rule 1 of geek toys - as soon as you buy one the suppliers will either drop the price significantly, announce a new improved version, or both. If you've got outstanding credit card debt, paying that off now will mean less interest to pay later, and so more money available to spend on a hopefully cheaper device.
  • I used it last week to watch the torrent of the MK Dons game on my 4hr flight from Toronto to Calgary. I read my latest kindle book on it during the 2hrs it took me to get from Calgary to Vancouver this morning and I am now catching up on Charlton Life on it from my hotel room. May watch a movie on it later or The Football League show from the weekend. For anybody who travels for work it is absolutely fantastic. My company laptop is locked down beyond and is basically useless for any of the above. I am far from an Apple fanboy, this is the only Apple item I own but for travel purposes it is a great entertainment unit.

Good call, i have one but dont use it, ridiculous as would be brilliant if could run flash and play poker on it. basically its good for apps and is a good novelty but i dont recommend anyone buying one to replace a laptop as they are very limited. Still a good thing to have but personally not for me until they come to some sort of agreemant with flash.

The ipad 2 is due out later this month, so the prices have dropped by £ 100 or so.

What do you all think of the ipad now, is it worth getting, or would it be worth saving a few £ and getting one of these?

I knew Leroy could not resist an anti apple rant!.
I am the first in the que, (obviously behind Leroy ) to admit that they are expensive, and have more than a few faults, but so do Italian sports cars and most people aspire to them!. Some of us have to use the bloody things professionally Leroy, so let us live in own little world of style over substance eh!. Just amazes me that people seem to aspire to mac's...... but not to PC's even though they are cheaper, quicker, better!. All the right 'logical' reasons, BUT Apple's are like there owners, expensive to maintain, a bit slow, and not all they are cracked up to be! . But still a thing of beauty and wonderment, and you haven't got one!

  • I got one for the Geeky Mrs and she loves it.....she also bought me one, and I have to say its not as good as my iPhone....bit of a waste of money.
  • I still don't quite understand why you'd want to use a tablet rather than a laptop. Confused.com.

Well Ive got both and I have to agree with you now.
  • I saw a bloke ponderously typing on one (not sure if it was an apple or some other brand) and I thought just that Dabos. I appreciate it's a bit lighter, but I'd think I need to type a fair bit to use a web tool. And, if portability is a key driver then why wouldn't you use a smartphone.
  • Hi

I am going to Florida and going to get one for the kids.

Walmart have them starting at USD399 for 16GB.

Do I need to set up an i store account before i go.

    Advice would be grateful

  • In a nutshell.....no. Would be useful to get the wifi and 3G mobile connection version though.
  • Yet to read anything that you can do on an ipad that you can't do on a smartphone?

    Plus a phone does more!

Don't know how all you lot manage to use it on a commute, half the time I'm lucky to have enough space to unfold my paper to turn the page with it clenched under my chin and one hand hanging on to the rails, let alone holding & swiping on an ipad!
  • Don't forget that they start at £329 for the old version here at the moment

The new version is thinner faster and has 2 cams so make sure you buy that

On sale here on the 25th

Well I'm here at the airport waiting for a very delayed flight, just watched the cricket highlights from the BBC. Read several chapters from my book, caught up on Charlton Life and about to listen to a couple of new albums I loaded onto it this morning. It really is a useless bit of kit!!!

I could use my work laptop but as that has more security on it than President Obama's I.
    'll stick to the iPad.

Ps - I have a similarly locked down work Blackberry with a screen the size of a postage stamp . Love the video size you get on an iPad - couldn't imagine how bad it would be watching on the BB after getting use to this!

I actually had to ask one iPad user to hold on on the tube a couple of months ago. He had his precious iPad in one hand, a coffee in the other, and he kept bumping into people as the train moved along.

I should add it to the 'Things that annoy you thread' : iPad users on the tube who think their toy can take up the space that a person could easily fit it.

I can do all of that on my HTC mobile.

But in reality I'd be in the pub at the airport anyway!

Anybody with Apple annoy me, although their laptops seem fine. Just don't get all this ipod stuff, paying over the odds for an MP3 player with headphones you need to replace and have to download everything off itunes and convert all your stuff into itunes.
  • You don't have to download everything off iTunes. I get all my music from eMusic and Amazon but still have to use iTunes to get the music on my iPhone (but no conversion required).

I will however be upgrading to an Android at the end of my contract :)
  • SLL

(1). I use Napster-to-go for my music or buy CDs, have bought I think 2 albums off iTunes (both live and exclusive to iTunes) ! You can transfer almost any format to an iPad.

(2). Why would I buy a mobile when I get one from work, have never owned a personal mobile.

(3). My 10am flight has just been cancelled and I'm rebooked on the 5pm - were 6hrs behind you - I'll take you up on your pub suggestion and watch more cricket over a cold beer :)

To send naughty pics to your missus and to receive some back especially if you work away a lot...

Ipad 2 is coming out the end of this year, newest model is the Ipad 1.5 which is more expensive than the original Ipad but is more or less identical. So you may wanna hold out till the end of the year.
  • Sorry Siblers - iPad 2 is released here on the 25th of this month
  • Yes i am sure somebody has.
  • There are rumours of an iPad 3 just before Xmas too (assuming Siblers is relating the current 2 to 1.5?)

I have to say I'm still not convinced. There are a few situations where I can see them being useful, but its a lot of money just to be able to browse the web and use a few apps, where a phone or laptop would do exactly the same job.

Ok, granted the commute is probably the best example but as SLL said above, I'm not even guaranteed a seat getting on the train at Welling every morning now and I cant remember a time I got a seat on a rushhour train from New Cross, so is it really practical? Remote desktop connection appeals but I can still do that from my Android phone if I need to and its not problem from the laptop.

Cant convince myself I need one...but I want one lol.

Er yeah muddled myself up there, I meant the Ipad 1.5 as the Ipad2 (seeing as there is pretty much nothing new about the Ipad2) and I meant the Ipad 2 as the Ipad 3.
