  • Coventry Poly, 1989-1992, BA Hons, Economic Development and Planning. First for my exams, third for my attendance at study groups, meant I got a 2.1

Placement year in 1991 working in Luton for a Co-operative Development Agency, helping people to start their own business with the redundancy money they'd got from Vauxhall laying them off from the factory there...goodness knows what they made of a 21 year old me telling them how to start a business after they'd been working all their lives..

Had a fantastic time, made some great friends (re-union down in Devon the w/end of Plymouth away, happy days) and left without too much debt as made sure I worked through all the holidays and evenings in term time too. Cov was an 'interesting' place to be at that time....hmmm.

Degree has made absolutely no difference to my professional life whatsoever as always wanted to work in music and that was what I did upon graduating when I got a temp job at C4 in the music dept...it's kind of gone on to a life of media bullsh*t since then..
  • I did really well at school, took GCSE's two years early and AS Levels a year early. The problem always was I was smart, but I knew I was smart and everyone told me that I was smart! So I became lazy and somewhat cocky. It didn't help I think, that my mum has a first in English from Oxford and she really wanted me to do well academically and me being a stubborn teenager rebelled like hell! I was more interested in playing football and chasing girls. I went to college but found I was only going to play for the football team and spent the rest of the time playing snooker and pool in the local snooker club. Just after Christmas in my first year it dawned on me that I didn't have the motivation to catch up so left and got a job.
Fortunately I was promoted 3 times in a short space of time and was in a position to buy my flat at 20. At 24 now I'm pretty bored with my job but there's no chance in hell anywhere else will give me the money I'm getting and can't afford to start again from scratch as I have the financial commitments.

All in all though I'm glad I did what I did as a lot of my friends have just finished Uni and the majority are working in shops as the competition for jobs is so fierce at the moment. They also think that my generation won't be able to buy a place until they're 40 odd now so getting in there early will definitely serve me well in the future. I hope so anyway!
  • Got a Desmond from Liverpool (not a lot of) Hope in 2003 in Sociology and Sport, Health and Recreation.

Not worth the paper it's printed on but some good p1ss ups and made me grateful that I live in Greater London and not up north.
  • Got a 2:1 in Public Policy from Birmingham Uni in 2007; just about to complete (fingers crossed) a masters in Planning and Development from South Bank University. Masters has been done part time over two years, funded by my firm - its taken only minimal work and attendance for these qualifications and hardly learnt anything of real use; pretty much everything I do in my job I have learnt while doing the job. Qualifications are entirely inconsequential IMO but you need the letters behind your name, such is the world today...

Loved undergraduate uni though, great time and fortunate enough that my student debt isn't as high as many cos my parents were able to help me out and I worked every summer/Xmas/easter. There were a sh*tload of spoilt g*ts at uni who were driving about in brand new minis and swanning off travelling the world every somewhere all on daddys cash, which was pretty appalling to see (I spent all my cash traipsing down to all the Charlton games, which prompted plenty of raised eyebrows from my parents in a financial outlay sense)

Also agree with RodneyCharltonTrotta - Birmingham was great to piss about in for 3 years at uni (and conveniently located for away games) but wouldn't swap it for London unless it was for a vast sum of money...
  • I came out of school with A-levels (took them during Italia 90, lovely), and went straight into work after that

Felt in a bit of rut at work so went through the Open University off my own back in my early 30s, and achieved a 2:1 BA Hons in Social Science with Politics.

Still in the same job but its kicked on a bit, now going through some further qualifications there. Should be working on an assignment now but as usual CL is distracting me !

"There was no opportunity to use my acid wit" he retorted. "My equilibrium was upset, and I suffered a bad reaction."

"A bit radical, I know, but I dissociate myself from you."

It's a laugh a minute in the Chemistry lab.

It's only hard to get out of if you become reliant on the money. So many different areas of law that the important thing is to find out what you enjoy before committing to a specialism.
  • BA Politics and Philosophy 2.1
Then some legal qualifications from University North London and College of Law.

Intend to do a PHD in history when I retire or semi-retire. Would have loved to have been an academic.
