I'd pack light and pick one up when you get there, probably for a fraction of the price!

Further to my aggressive Scottish women post,a pensioner was attacked in his own home by a couple of junkies in our village on Saturday.A lone village woman was passing by and heard the noise, she went to investigate and found these junkies, one on top of the pensioner and he had a knife.Wasting no time she dragged the knife wielding scum off the old man and gave him a slap and threw him in to the garden. The other low life scum ran for his life. The police so far have only got the one who was in a heap in the garden! Get in there!!
i remember going to sharm and telling the fella i didn't believe he had that many camels, plus my mates missus got right narked as he didn't offer zip for her,
next day there was a knock on the door and there's this fella with 300 camels all stacked up behind him and shaking some ownership papers in my face, I of course had to oblige him..
ok the first bit was true anyway, he didn't really have an answer to that
Been to Dahab a couple of times. Much much more chilled than Sharm and the like.
If you get a chance do the trip to Petra in Jordan... amazing place. Up there with Machu Pichu, Teothiuachan (sp?) and Angkor Wat for sure.
Do you scuba dive? If so definitely don´t miss the Thistlegorm ship wreck. A WW2 cargo ship that went down, you get to see row upon row of well preserved army jeeps and motorbikes from the time, you´ll need to be an advance diver with around 20 dives. The blue hole an canyon are also great dives.
I just got back 3 weeks ago went to Sharm and they are very embarrassed about the protests etc.
I've been before and you don't get harrassed all the time. First few days yes but once you get used to saying La Shokran (no thanks) they soon get the idea!
I love it and am going back in September. Make sure you Snorkel or Scuba and get an underwater camera it's well worth it.
Other things to do:
Visit St Catherines Monestry
Go on the stars and dinner trip
Go to the Casino's
Get pished on all inclusive
Get fat on all inclusive
Go shopping for souvenirs I have 2 Shishas and 4 wooden camels as well as an Egyptian dagger all engraved cost about £20 for all of it!
Sunbathe
Any holiday that involves telling people to piss off on multiple occasions, is not for me, i'm afraid. But maybe that is just me. I want a stress free holiday, and having to deal with people hassling me. I can do without. Still, don't doubt it has it's good points.
went to sharm last August and cooked for 2 weeks it was in the 50's from dawn to dusk sitting in the bar at 10pm and its if someone has turned a hairdrier on in your face the wind was that warm.
Only go all inclusive and be careful what you eat no salads(washed in tap water) and always wash hands after handleing the money or your get the trotts, but overall a very nice place and the quad bikes are the nuts.
Sharks you get there are relatively small bar the ones brought in over winter by livestock container ships dumping dead lamb, goats, chickens and cattle. And they only ate Germans which is never bad.
Always wanted to go to Petra but it may be too hot in May so i'll prob end up diving most of the week. Blue hole and the canyon are top of my list. What's Dahab town like Crazyaddick? It sounds more 'Bedouin' than Sharm etc. Any places you'd recommend?
How things change. I lived in Cairo for a year in 1988/89 and we used to go to Sharm at weekends. Two hotels, one Israeli-owned and hardly ever open. We used to camp on the beach after going to the one restaurant in town. Two huts renting dive gear. Egypt is a great country. Rather predictably the 'revolution' is ending in tears and now seems more like the military takeover it always was. So please do go if you are thinking of doing so ad the FO say it is safe.
been to egypt twice sharm el shiek and hurghada both holidays were superb food was great as was people all be it you do get hassled but a firm NO does the trick ,you have to go the snorkelling colours r superb and go karting is a good laugh, all the hotels are of a great standard
Really liked Dahab - much nicer than Sharm. Take handwash and use it constantly and even then be prepared for some squits. The blue hole is a pretty nice snorkel. All the gravestones in the rock suggest that it's really for very experienced divers those so maybe Thistlegorm would be a better bet (although an early start). The valley of the kings is completely amazing, but I think that Luxor or Cairo would be a very long way from there.
Generally though I'm with Robbo on this. I don't mind a bit of banter with the locals but Egypt takes it to another level, the constant hassle and elaborate stories to try and get your cash are tedious
Alex - The town is just much less built up, no high rises and "big" hotels. Has a more "backpackery" feel to it, if that makes sense. Still lots of great places to eat. When I have been I´ve just rocked up and found accommodation when I have arrived. Assuming you are flying into Sharm you can just grab a taxi when you get to the airport. Just had a look at Trip Advisor and I think I stayed at a place called the Acacia but the memory is a bit fuzzy.
I never took any handwash, ate at a lot of the local places and never had a problem. But I think I have a fairly cast iron stomach.
McLovin - all the gravestones are for people who have attempted to dive through the arch at the bottom of the blue hole and run into trouble because it is far beyond the limits set for recreational divers. If you go with a reputable dive company they will never suggest this unless you have technical diving experience (ie multiple decompression stops, etc). I think the top of the arch starts at around 40 metres and spits you out at 55 metres. The lower limit for PADI certified rec divers is 40m.
Great video of a crazy guy free diving it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrXQbucZUDA
Alex - if you are a competent diver, I can´t stress enough that you should do the Thistlegorm. I´ve dived (dove?) for ten years in lots of the tops spots and this still goes down as one of my favourite dives ever.
You´ll have a blast. I actually considered going back to Dahab to complete my Divemaster and Instructors course, still might do one day!
I've got 124 dives logged, padi AOWD with nitrox. My wife has just finished her open water referral today so this holiday will be finishing her qualification dives and a few gentle dives. Loads of people have recommended the Thistlegorm but it will have to wait for another trip. Some of my dive friends have also said the the Salem Express is a good dive too.
Won't be trying for the arch, far too deep for me, and I haven't moved up to a rebreather yet ;-)
We're in a hotel just outside the main town but they run a shuttle bus so we can get there easily. I love a bedouwin type cafe and a 'chat' with locals but most reorts are a little too westernised.
Four weeks before we go, really looking forward to it.

Yeah, I've never been keen on caves (something about having a ceiling above me). When I snorkled there there was a fella free diving (probably about 20 -30m though it's hard to tell looking down the way, and it was hilarious watching people with three tanks looking startled as he zipped past them
Our Egypt holiday has been cancelled due to so many people pulling out the flights have been cancelled! So weve landed a fortnight in Bulgaria, get your money on that that will be the next place to start a Civil war!!

Yes, when we play Cardiff/Swansea you can hear the crowd singing sheep, sheep, sheep haggler.
Anyone been to Egypt lately? I'm due to go to Dahab in the middle of May and wonder if the recent troubles have settled down.
BTW. Anyone been to Dahb? Not been there myself yet so any trave tips will be welcomed.
