    Personally...........

    Siouxsie Sioux
    Kate Bush
    Polly Styrene
    Ari (Slits)
    Kirsty MacColl.

Granted, not the Best but I likes them.

The "Best five British....." is a different discussion..............

Depends what you mean by "Top" and what genre.  The BBC currently employs over a dozen female singers as part of the Choir - The BBC Singers - they're currently knocking themselves out in the Proms series.  I suspect that technically they are all better than everyone in the above lists.

But, do they compose?  In the main no.  Are they commercially successful?   Hardly, they are on a salary.  They are certainly not famous, at least by Hello magazine standards.

Does someone like Katherine Jenkins count?

Anyway, if my album collection is anything to go by and it probably isn't, my list is Alison Goldfrapp, Amy Winehouse, Sade, Annie Lennox and Skye Edwards

Whilst there are some fantastic singers previously listed (and many who I have listened to over the years) from the more popular to the more 'left-field' I can say that only one that has touched me with the soul in her delivery is Amy Winehouse.....

and I'll add Wendy Morgan from The Popguns to the list, just for emotion at least, but I may be biased.

I am mostly with Mog although never liked Souxsie and Kate Bush was just annoying. So

Poly Styrene (I think she was half Sudanese)

Ari Up (all German but in a Brit band)

    Vi Subversa

    Pauline Murray

    Honey Bane

At last. Someone else has put down Sarah Cracknell. Shame you put her last though.

The question for me is not if she's got a beautiful voice but in which of these two videos does she do back seat of the car posing the best:

Sarah Cracknell is the queen of Indie / Alternative dance music

Poly Styrene? Being generous and counting from 1979, I still make that more than 30 years...

I think she was still singing in July 1981 though (and she had a couple of comebacks later).

Ok, if you're having Poly Styrene I guess that brings into play Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw and Petula Clark - they were all "active" in the last 30 years.
